Does anyone here know if the patches have to be installed to the Steam version? Are the popular patches compatible with the Steam version?

If you love something let it go. If it doesn't return, hunt it down and kill it.

I didn't know there was patches. Is there one that stops it being hard as fuck?

Steam version comes pre patched. There is a fan made 1.2 patch, but it should NEVER be used. We host it for archival purposes, but it was intended to hlp multiplayer back in the day, but in reality it will mess the game up and even make it unplayable in single player. If you want improved AI and more, including the option of playing the single player campaign in multiplayer co-op, I suggest Age of Redemption. http://e-mods.net/modules/mods/about_aor.php

I consider it more of a question whether it has a necessity for that (i.e. Bloodlines is almost obligatory Wesp's patch). So with that in mind, should I get it?

Actually, I'd highly recommend playing vanilla first. Then do another play through with AoR to appreciate the improvements. Redemption with no extra patches runs and plays just fine, unless your computer get ye old "crash to vienna" bug, which I haven't heard of happening in a while.
