Need ideas for single player quests/story
« on: July 14, 2013, 03:00:50 pm »
I have started working on a short medieval singleplayer chronicle based on some loose ideas. I'm mostly going to use the Prague map for it.

By order of his/her sire, the player has escaped from the Inquisition in Vienna to Prague to seek out help. With the assist of a Tremere elder they find out that Prince Brandl doesn't care about these problems so it's basically up to the player to try to unite the warring clans of Prague against this oncoming threat.

The NPC's that will join your party are Julius(Tremere), Boris(Brujah) and Harold(Nosferatu). The final encounter will probably be with the vampire hunters. Other than that I really don't know how the quests will look like, except it probably will be hack'n slash style.

Everything is temporary so any ideas about the story, quests, npc's, etc is very welcome.

I found a question to guide me when writing a story: I ask myself why is this story worth telling? what ideas can be explored using this story and not another?

So I think analyzing and understanding the theme of the setting is a good way to get inspired: What topics does vampire explores?, why players are interested in portraying vampires and not dark superheroes or drug addicts? just thinking about hypothetical answers to this questions brings some ideas into mind.

Once you have the core ideas the NPC and the Settings become tools that you can use... it doesn't matter if things go as you intended past that because you already know where it all started, where it all can end.

The other thing to remember is to engage the players, get inside their head and don't let them feel bored or that they are doing the same thing over and over.

As a DM/GM/Storyteller/whatever I've always found single player campaigns rough to pull off.

Ultimately, I've found it's better to have either a single 'super powered' character or else have the player controlling multiple PC's. The DM playing both sides of the board (ie: NPC's, henchmen, etc...) always seems to end up problematic at best.

To apply that to your campaign: What was it that allowed this character to escape the Inquisition when all the others did not? Did other Kindred help him escape? If not, why does he give a rat's ass if the rest of the Kindred in Prague burn? It actually makes things a lot better for him if he's the only vamp in town, as the Inquisition is more likely to move on eventually and it cuts down on competition for food and other resources. If the Inquisition knows who he is, then why is he sticking around? Leaving the city could be a good chronicle in itself.

It's almost like setting up a murder: means, motive, and opportunity. The character sheet provides the means, the player provides the motive, and the DM provides the opportunity.

I'm making this singleplayer chronicle for the Redemption computer game, in case that didn't came through. In that regard I'm a bit limited to what I can do. Still, I'll give some thoughts to the points you mentioned. I have no experience with PnP or insights into the vampire "mentality" so any tips in that matter is appreciated.

I was thinking that the player has been ordered by his/her sire to seek out a Tremere elder in Prague and give him this letter explaining the situation in Vienna. But maybe that is not a reason strong enough.

Although technically I disagree with Mouser regarding just about anything concerning game design and this on the whole is no exception , in the end it is similar to designing a PnP adventure in the sense that you should put yourself in the place of the player and predict the sort of choices they would make in the situation of the story and continue the story around that.

Redemption is limited in its Hack and Slash Gameplay but with some light coding you can still pull off a great deal and that should be enough to tell an engaging story, in the end its all about the story and the way its delivered which is why point and click adventure games are still around..

About making a character that is a superhero, I think that is nonsense, Today many games that are console oriented lean on that story of "the one world savior" and power progression as a crutch to the fact that making a story for everyone is not so easy and they find themselves without any real idea.
Remember why the Matrix was a smash hit and the two sequels were relatively weak... that's right the story became focused on an all powerful protagonist who will surely win the day, any interesting conflict they had was abandoned in favor of that cliche of a hero saving everyone from world doom..
Compare Skyrim and Fallout:New Vegas, one had a burping superhero and the other had a vault dweller who was not that special to begin with, guess which has a more interesting story?

So don't worry about the superpowers, focus more on building an interesting gameworld with convincing characters that people find cool, In the end it doesn't matter how 'super-powered' the protagonist is, what matters is how s/he interacts with the world, the conflict they are facing and that they have enough options.
Sure some gamers play to feel more powerful in the game and like the false achievements, me not so much and I know others like me that kind of prefer the old games for that reason.

Silly me for not checking the forum and going by the title

I was referring to pen and paper games. Obviously in a computer game the rules are different.

there are no rules, what matters is what works
