Changing textures?
« on: March 26, 2019, 11:09:04 PM »
Is there a way to view/edit textures in Redemption?

All of the modding guides I've seen seem to revolve around models and maps, and I haven't seen if there's a way to just replace textures.

Bloodlines has VTFEdit, where you can view the game's ttz files, convert them to bmp/tga/png and back to ttz files again. Is there something similar for Redemption?

Thanks!

In Redemption, it uses .tga files. They are packed in .nob files that can be opened and repacked with 7zip v.4.65 or earlier. Winrar also works, but is a paid program, and people who use 7zip may not be able to open your edited nob files without paying, so we tend to use 7zip. The vast majority of the textures can be found in "lmaterials.nob".

https://e-mods.net/forum/index.php/topic,738.msg6137.html#msg6137

You can replace textures and repack into a .nob file, but the maximum size is 512x512, hard coded into the engine. There are some textures re-used throughout maps, so if you replace one, it could affect other areas. You can upscale some smaller resolution textures, but there is potential you'd see some edge lines without map editing, which is certainly possible with the NodSDK, but with a learning curve and some crashes.

If you're considering making a mod, I think instead of uploading the entire lmaterials.nob file with every texture, you can upload a loose folder containing the altered textures. However, the folder needs to follow the directory pattern inside the .nob file. Inside lmaterials.nob is a series of folders, starting with "materials". If you click on "Materials", there are more folders inside based on the hub from which the textures reside. So for example, if you wanted to edit "Asphault1_1_L.tga", it's in the London folder. You'd create a new folder called "Materials". Inside you'd create another folder called "London" where you'd place the altered "Asphault1_1L.tga" file. If you then place that folder in the main Redemption directory, it should override the texture in the Lmaterials.nob file. I'd assume directory and file names are case sensitive. Make sense?

If you have more in depth questions that I can't answer, I can hit up Lenora, Eta, or one of the other modders to see if they can answer. In fact, I'll ask one to visit this thread to make sure I stated everything correctly.

Edit: Lenora told me you could also just add the new textures into the 3d folder in the Redemption directory to override.

That sound like bloodlines' own structure

Yeah, I can definitely work with that. Thanks. :)

Been thinking of doing a new run on Redemption, and I know there's a couple of textures I wanted to change already. I figured I'd check to see what the viability was of doing a potential X20 Mod but for Redemption.

I use https://www.irfanview.com/ to view the .tga files (after extracting lMaterials.nob into the main VtmR directory). As for editing the textures I think Gimp should work? I've only created custom textures, but used Paintshop Pro for it.
