Whatever happened to Chris Avellone?
« on: March 28, 2021, 09:23:24 am »
Seriously, no news on him since he has been reported on twitter. Nor from himself nor from anyone else.
Any idea on what happened to him?

Unknown Mack truck drived by unknown John Smith driver accidentally rolled over Samantha Wallschlaeger 43 times, splattered road with her insides and then disappeared in unknown direction.

It's a shame he wrote two of my favorite rpg's, Planescape: Torment and Knights of the Old Republic II.  For the record I saw the video that exonerated him and don't believe his accusers at all.  But we live in a time where the internet decides whether your guilty, even if there is no evidence to show for it.  I had heard over the years that he was difficult to work with and had a drinking problem, but the man knew how to write characters.  I wonder what characters he had come up with for Bloodlines 2 before getting the axe.

IDK... I don't know enough about the accusations yet, but it's really not uncommon for talented artistic dudes to turn out to be shitty, or to turn shitty when given enough power for a while. And it's not always who you think either. Look what happened with Joss Whedon (the golden boy of early 2000s mainstream feminism, now outed as a complete perv) vs. Zack Snyder (I might roll my eyes at films like 300 but he's apparently really chill to work with). And Whedon still has his career, his money, and his freedom even though he creeped on an underage actor while directing Buffy.

My bias tends to lean more in favor of the accuser than the accused, in situations like this, because statistics and also because bitter personal experience. That might not fly in a court of law, but my opinion isn't a court of law.

I hadn't saw it. I thought it was a clickbait

It was reported he got drunk co-workers in order to have sex with. The phrase "no age check" was also used.

Sorry to heard about that.

Yeah this is like the most widespread, common tactic used by IRL rapists. That alone doesn't mean that he's definitely one, but if a bunch of coworkers confirmed him doing this... It's really, really common. A lot of men don't see it as a form of rape.

Sorry to heard about that.

TBH I was going to contextualize this "I've been lucky myself, it's mostly been my friends", but I've also been pushed out of social spaces by creeps, because it was easier/safer than confronting them (and because I was unsure about whether I was Just Imagining It, didn't want other people to overreact, etc). So I guess I haven't been so lucky.

In any case yeah this problem is omnipresent. There are absolutely false accusations from time to time, but usually when someone takes the trouble and risk of openly outing a harasser or abuser, it's because they've finally gotten fed up.

I understand what you're saying and although I am a big Chris Avellone fan, I in no way defend his actions if proven to be true.  If there's anything I hate is those in position of power who abuse their authority.  But after watching the video that exonerates him it does bring the accusers allegations into question.  If he's guilty then he's a scumbag that deserves what he gets.  If he's innocent and loses his career over the false accusations then it is sad.  He was a great writer and gaming needs them now more than ever.
