Title: What games are you currently playing?
Post by: Talyn82 on May 13, 2020, 07:58:34 pm
During these trying times many of us are in quarantine, and either we can't go to work or are unemployed because of the pandemic.  So my question to you is what games are you currently playing to pass the time in quarantine?

Me personally I am unemployed and to take my mind off of it I am playing the Witcher 2.  Which I got for free from GoG.com a few years ago.  I played the first one many moons ago, and did not enjoy it due to the combat system.  But I did enjoy the history and lore of the Witcher universe.  I also liked messing with that priest in the village.  Plus I love redheads so Triss was an instant favorite.  I want to give the second one a try, and if I like it I'll buy the Witcher 3 Game of the Year edition from GoG.com.  There are many fans of these games and want to experience what they experienced.

I feel you - I have lost my job in April.
As for your question: I'm in another round of Bloodlines, which I covered in the 'What did you do in the WoD today' thread.
I have reinstalled Dragon Age 2 and am in a playthrough with Alayne Hawke, a mage. And of course, there is still SWTOR. I'm levelling a gunslinger right now and an assassin on imp side.

@Barabbah:  Is that the game where you ride on a motorcycle and beat people over the head?  If so I used to play that game a lot way back in years gone by.

@fylimar:  Mage Hawke is my favorite.  I found that the fight with the Arishok was easier as a mage than a warrior.  I want to replay a mage again but this time I want my Hawke to be sarcastic.

Three people on this topic without a job... these are trying times  :58_45_83:

I myself, being the funny dork that I am, decided to play Pathologic in the middle of a pandemic, as I've told Talyn before.

It's a russian game about three healers trying to stop a plague that is ravaging their hometown. As a game it has probably one of the most interesting and original stories I've ever seen in a videogame. It's a bit rough however, the gameplay is akin to a long walking simulator. A LOOOOONG walking simulator.

@Highwayman667:  About playing Pathologic during a pandemic.  Before I settled on playing Witcher 2, I was thinking about playing Vampyr.  Which takes place during a pandemic.

We are all funny people indeed  !

After finishing BG2 I want to give another try to a very notable RPG... Gothic !

@Highwayman667:  Gothic is one of my favorite rpg's.  It's a pretty hard game in the beginning.  You have to be aware of where you are cause the enemies are tough in the beginning.  But by the end game you will cut through them like butter.  After that play Gothic II.  It's better than the first and bigger.  I never played the third one so I don't know anything about it.  But the key thing to remember is to take it slow, and if an npc tells you to stay out of certain areas then do so.

Yes

Regarding Gothic and Gothic II, good luck with them, they're worth every second. About the 3rd I haven't tried it yet but I know is absolutely HUGE

Thanks guys

I believe nowadays it has to be patched and modded to be played in better resolutions and with a better control scheme ? If there's any recommendations please let me know so I may enjoy it to the fullest  :afro:

When after I completed the games I searched for mods and found the site 'World of Gothic.'  It is had everything Gothic at the time.  I just went over there right now and it seems they are having technical issues.  If they fix it anytime soon I recommend going there:  https://www.worldofgothic.com/ (https://www.worldofgothic.com/)

Gothic and Gothic II (with the expansion) can be updated with a series of small fan patches to be installed in a particular order but I don't think they are necessary (unless maybe if you use win 10, I can't remember)

Gothic 3 on the other side was shipped incomplete like our favourite game and NEEDS the fan patch. Avoid the "official" expansion if you can (it was made by another developer which made the game even more unstable).

At this point the license was stolen "taken" by the new publisher who decided to take yet another developer to make a 4th game and its expansion. But these guys, experts in RTS games instead of RPG, made a disaster (despite the next gen graphics) so it was later rebranded as a different series called Arcania.

End of the story: the original developers (Pirañha Bytes) made another succesful trilogy (Risen), started another game (Elex), the old publisher bankrupted and lose the Gothic license which went back to its original developers.

I might be installing the "Player Kit" that Mandalore Gaming recommended. It apparently helps with resolution issues as well as frame rate.

And what do you guys think about the remake ? I've heard mixed opinions on the demo that came out a while ago.

I didn't know there was a remake in the works.  I will look up some information.  Also that website I recommended 'World of Gothic' works.  Just click on the game you want info on and the web page loads just fine.  The site has mods on it too.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention Gothic II is kinda funny, because the world of Gothic is based on a medieval Germanic society, and I don't remember if this happens in the original but the npc's in the second game sound like wiseguy's from Brooklyn, NY.  I find it funny because I live in Brooklyn and grew up around suspicious looking individuals.

I noticed that from looking at videos of the first Gothic. I think it's hilarious how they sound

All the game is missing is a companion voiced by Joe Pesci, replaying the roles he played in Goodfellas, Casino, or My Cousin Vinny.

That sounds great.  It's too bad Tony Jay (Elder God) has passed.  In the original game he played Mortanius the Necromancer.  But they have to try and contact the original voice actors if they're still alive.  I can't picture anyone else voicing Kain.  Anyway I hope the game is first or third person view open world action rpg like the original.  Also I want to see the fmv's from the original game done as cinematics or cutscenes with modern graphics.

I also hope they stick to the original story, and not try to create a new one like Square Enix tried with the FFVII remake.

Anyway Highwayman whenever you have time I recommend playing the original, and see how Kain's story began and what let him to choose Nosgoth's canon fate.  It is the game that got me into the Legacy of Kain series.  Also if and when you play it, replay the other games in the series, since they make references to the original that might have gone over your head at the time.  Especially Defiance since that game comes full circle and takes place during the events of Blood Omen 1.

Anyway as you can see I am happy but keeping my expectations low.

We might be in luck, Bluepoint Studios has focused a lot of game remasters: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluepoint_Games (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluepoint_Games)

And have no fear, Blood Omen is right on queue after BG2. I will also be cautiously optimistic by now. It would be incredible to have a renewed experience with the Legacy of Kain series once again but rumors are rumors after all.

I know it's just a rumor for now but one can dream.  I read in the previous link they made remakes in the past.  I will checkout the link you posted.  As for playing the original Blood Omen take your time.  Also know the fmv's have not aged well graphic wise.  What I mean by that the fmv's look terrible but get the point across.

Anyway take your time and play BG2 there is no rush.:)

Taking a break from BG2 to play this very very very awesome beauty that my boy Talyn recommended

Had a few issues with the story but it offers a FANTASTIC premise for an RPG. Can barely wait to play the whole trilogy.

Here's a tip when dealing with multiple creatures.  When you see a group of them walk towards them step by step.  Eventually one of them will see you and come after you.  Back away and kill the creature away from his buddies.  Then walk step by step until one of the other ones see you.  Walk backwards and kill it away from his compatriots.  Keep doing this until they're all dead.

This is a good tactic early on when a creature or npc can kill you in one or two hits.  Later on you become so strong you can engage the groups and survive.

Are you still in the prison colony or are you in Orc territory?  If you're low level and in Orc territory you will be destroyed.  When an npc tells you to stay out of an area.  Heed their advice and return later.  They are not playing when they say that.

I'm playing an interactive novel called 'The Innsmouth Case' atm. It's for a review. So far, I find it a bit lacking, it doesn't get the typical lovecraftian horror right.

Another game, I'm still playing, is Star Wars - The Old Republic. I have finished the Jedi knight story with my Togruta girl and am now at the bounty hunter story. I'm doing a lot of Flashpoint and you sometimes meet really weird people there (not the good kind of weird)

Son I already finished the game ! I'm going on a second playthrough with my boys in the New Camp

I think it has a few flaws but what it does right it does it AMAZINGLY WELL... I can now see where Skyrim took all of its inspiration, it's almost the exact same mechanics at work: hunting in the wilds, collecting animal parts, cooking, taking raw metals and working them at a smithy.

People who say Skyrim isn't an RPG need to take a real hard look at Gothic  :justabite:  !

No, it's for the German Lovecraft Society. I'll help there with social media and stuff. It's not directly based on the novel, the story is set in Innsmouth, but nowadays. You are a detective, who gets a missing child case and have to investigate in Innsmouth.

I also checked out that game from the vid you posted for fylimar.  I looked it up on GoG but it said it induces paranoia, and I already live in constant paranoia as it is.

Same here. I like to play the Fighter type here, with emphasis on the bow and a bit of magic for golems and demons to summon
Mud was alive during my very first playthrough. On the current one he bravely fell to the rusty sword of a goblin. I swear it was completely accidental

@Highwayman667:  The trailer looks great.  I am glad they are remaking the game.  I'm glad it's coming out on PC.  All this talk about Gothic is making me want to play.  I did buy Elex from GoG when it was released.  That game was made by the same developers who made the three main Gothic games.

If your still in the Gothic mood I highly recommend the sequel.  It is much bigger and you get to meet old friends.

Anyway glad you enjoyed the game.  After your done with the series.  If you need any recommendations on good classic games let me know.

I wanted to play Gothic II... but I was unable to  :58_45_40:  ... For some reason I was unable to get it running beyond what was probably 10 frames per second. It's apparently an issue with the modern render mod but I'm not sure. Honestly though, I'd rather not play it yet if it doesn't look as good as Gothic 1 did, so I'll give it a try later.

Meanwhile, I've been playing this quirky classic:

I think the issue might be with the D3D11 render. Without that one the performance was just fine but the graphics were just unbearable  :58_83:  ... I would've grown accostumed but Gothic 1 with updated graphics looked MUCH better and I just couldn't abide by that.

That song is something, although for me its has more Westeros associations and in particular with the rebels in Robert's Rebellion.

Hope it works out for you.  As for me I've been replaying the original Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain.  It is as good as I remember the music is great and the voice acting is top notch.  Plus with a fully powered Soul Reaver you are a god.

I've also been playing Daggerfall for the first time ever.  I've been playing with the Daggerfall Unity mod which modernizes the game, improves graphical quality, and fixes the many bugs Daggerfall is known for.

I've also been playing Daggerfall for the first time ever.  I've been playing with the Daggerfall Unity mod which modernizes the game, improves graphical quality, and fixes the many bugs Daggerfall is known for.

That's great info Talyn. I have Daggerfall sitting in my library but I was wondering how I could make it run in modern systems, so thanks for the tip

If you ever want to play Arx Fatalis (damn sure you'd love it) then use the Arx Libertatis mod. It improves on every issue and also optimizes it for modern systems.

@Highwayman667:  No problem man.  I also found a few graphical overhaul mods to bring the graphics to 2020 standards.

Here's the link to Daggerfall Unity:
https://www.dfworkshop.net/ (https://www.dfworkshop.net/)

You need this mod to modernize the game and allow mods.

Here's a link to a complete overhaul mod.  Also check out the mods in the recommended section on the same page.  They are all good.

Here's a link to a video that shows the mods I linked but also shows you how to install them.  It's easy peasy:

@Highwayman667:  About Arx Fatalis I played that game back in the original XBox days.  I do own it on PC through GOG.com.  I enjoyed that game.  I liked the atmosphere.  I only played as a warrior and never completed the game.  I think around that time I got Morrowind and KOTOR and those two games pretty much took over my life lol.

Same old story  ! It was released against too much competition and went slightly overlooked. It's crazy how much of that game and Gothic is found all over more modern titles like Skyrim and Witcher 3.

Haha same thing happen with Bloodlines.  I never played it until last December because when it was released I was still heavily into Morrowind, and then KOTOR 2 was released and that game also took over my life.

Here's a vid of a mod from the same creators of Beyond Skyrim: Bruma.  it's called Beyond Skyrim:  Morrowind.  Right now it's being developed for Skyrim LE but like Bruma it will eventually come to SE.

Anyway Elder Scrolls III:  Morrowind is my favorite out of the three (Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim) I've completed, and am eager to see Vvardenfell in the 4th era post Tribunal.  So far it looks good.

Here's the video:

I recently have Bruma and can't wait when they'll finish Bravil and Leyawiin, but seriously, once you cross the border you'll not want to come back to that Skyrim with it's monumentally idiotic vanilla storylines. Personally I don't even start all this dragonborn(-ish) crap, it doesn't even exist to me thanks to the mods like this and others.

I've been playing Skyrim since it was first released and have only done the main quest and dlc's once.  I play the game for mods and to roleplay.  I do have a mod from Skyrim LE that I ported to SE that fleshes out the Companions.  Morrowind is the only game in the series that I've played the main quest multiple times and can still enjoy both modded and unmodded.  I've been playing Daggerfall for the past 2 or 3 days and have not started the main quest, because the city of Daggerfall is huge and has a ton of radiant quests.

Hey hey I adore Skyrim too I was just not a big fan of the main quest and factions.  As for Morrowind let me know when you decide to play I can give you tips to save you some frustration.  Oh and if you think Ulfric and his Stormcloaks are racists.  They have nothing on the Dunmer people.

I play the game for mods and to roleplay.

Exactly, but if everything's fine with the open world and great mod support, roleplay remains quite questionable with completely inadequate npcs Skyrim filled with, for instance all daedras together as one won't recognize you as a vampire and keep calling you "mortal", even dad of all vampires Molag Bal. And it's just one tiniest detail among the godzillions of others like that. Technically this game is awesome, but writings...

I am still playing Daggerfall, but out of the 3 Elder Scrolls games I've played Morrowind had the best writing, history, lore, and antagonist.  But Bethesda under Todd Howard is not known for their writing only there vast open worlds.  At least Skyrim is better than Oblivion.  It took me until Oblivion's 13th anniversary to finally complete that game, and I had it since release.

@Happydeathclaw:  Skywind looks and sounds great.  When I heard the Morrowind theme in the beginning it brought back memories.  I am still watching the video.  I wonder does Skywind seek to recreate the original game?  Or is it set in the 4th era after the Red Year?  I'll keep watching the video.

Firstly, it's +28C and can't even think right if it's higher than +15.
Secondly, I don't like that Volkihar bunch, they are ugly, and filthy, and dumb, they do suck.
Thirdly, this entire Skyrim never had anything slightly logical.

Was that a mod with it's own skills, perks and stuff or just roleplaying imagination?

@Happydeathclaw:  I used the "Better Vampires" mod to customize the player vamps abilities, like no death at sunlight, no weakness to fire, no weakened abilities when in sunlight, can drink potions for healing, can be effected by alcohol, and can eat, but still needs to drink blood, and some other tweaks I've forgotten.  The rest was roleplay.  It may sound overpowered but I remember in the first Blade film, the villain vampire said Blade had all of their strengths and none of their weaknesses.

But Harkon and that Falmer still whipped my butt in combat lol.

Everyone uses BV, it must have first of all if you play as a vampire especially from the very start, but eating... no more, all this carrying that damn food, cooking, yada-yada, I think I'm done being human in that game for the rest of eternity. A bootle of extracted blood potion and you're happy entire day and/or night, pure vampire is alot more fun. And joining Dawnguard makes alot of sence actually, even more that staying in Volkihar castle since they went completely insane with that prophecy and started to act even worse than Sabbat in Bloodlines, like Valerica says: we're masquerading for the centuries and everyone's happy, therephore Dawnguard is the necessary help to uphold the masquerade, and as it turns out Isran is not fanatic like Grünfeld Bach and has nothing against existence of normal vampires like Serana. But still... that bethesdish writing is extermely poor.

@Happydeathclaw:  I never cooked food or drank any of the alcohol in Skyrim since I've been playing the game.  I usually play as vampire and hhen I do it's a full blooded vamp.  I usually side with Clan Volkihar.  I like the idea of being the King of Vampires like Dracula in the Castlevania games and series or Kain in the Legacy of Kain series.  I usually use the Live Another Life mod to quickly start either with the Dawnguard or Clan Volkihar, and using console cheats I level myself to at least level 10, and give myself starter items via the AddItem menu mod.

@Highwayman667: I was randomly searching Google and came upon this entry.  Apparently back in 2004 work had begun on a sixth Legacy of Kain game, but was canceled by the publisher Eidos three or sixth months into development.  This ranks up there with Lucas Arts canceling KOTOR 3 for blunders in gaming history.

Here is the LOK wiki entry:

It looked like we were able to revisit Malek's bastion an area from the original Blood Omen.  I think that was where you find the twin axes Havok and Malice?

Well the first game Blood Omen was the brain child and developed by Silicon Knights and was published by Crystal Dynamics and Activision.  After a legal battle Crystal Dynamics won the rights to the future games.  Crystal Dynamics developed the Soul Reaver, and Defiance games and published by Eidos.  As far as I know Eidos still owns the rights to the series.  But it is important to remember the one who keep up with the Soul Reaver games, Amy Hennig left Crystal Dynamics.  So even if they made a sixth game it would be different like Blood Omen 2 is different from the main series.

Speaking of Amy Hennig, I saw this interview and was practically yelling at the screen "PLEASE GO BACK TO LOK" !!!

But what she says is very interesting. Her experience as a storyteller truly shined in LOK and it's good to see that it was always a priority for her.

Basically. Just shoot animals. You can get different rifles and ammo etc. You need to be quiet and spray stuff on yourself if down wind and track them.
