Top 5 RPG's
« on: June 17, 2020, 04:38:48 AM »
What are your top 5 must have rpg's of all time?

I will list mine with a small non spoiler reason as to why I love them.  Some of you may already know I enjoy these games.  All these games I believe should be number one on a number of lists

1)Morrowind (First open world rpg I ever played.  The history and lore of the Dunmer sucked me in.)

2)Bloodlines (Atmosphere, Lore, Music, and NPC's.)

3)Knights of the Old Republic II:  The Sith Lords (Many great characters such as Kreia, Atton, and Darth Sion.  It also has many quality of life improvements over the original.)

4)Dragon Age: Origins  (Many great characters, lore, and atmosphere.)

5)Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain (This is the first game that let me play as an anti-hero.  The lore, atmosphere, music, dialogue, and voice acting is great and still holds today.)

What are your top 5 rpgs?  Please do not post spoilers.

An honorary mention goes to Planescape Torment and the original Fallout.  Two games that would be at the top of any rpg list.

Ah ! A wonderful topic, here's my list.

1) Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. A wonderful game from the very same studio that gave us Bloodlines.

2) Mass Effect 3. The best cinematic experience I've ever had in a videogame. Applies for the previous entries as well.

3) VTM: Bloodlines. The best vampires ever to grace videogame history.

4) The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. An astonishing experience that modernizes the mechanics of classic CRPG titles.

5) The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The best action-rpg I've every played, though admittedly I've yet to play Morrowind and Oblivion.

Good picks.  Of those five I only played Bloodlines and Skyrim.  But I've always heard good things about those other games.  Skyrim is my second favorite Elder Scrolls game.  I am currently playing Daggerfall the second Elder Scrolls game in the series with updated graphics and gameplay.  If DF is as good as everyone says then it might take over Morrowind.  Apparently Morrowind was dumbed down compared to Daggerfall.  But they said the same thing about Oblivion compared to Morrowind, then Skyrim compared to Oblivion.  Bethesda can never get a break lol.

Also talking about Morrowind and Oblivion there are many graphical mods to make both games look great.  Whenever you do play Morrowind let me know I will set you up on how to play the game.  There's a bit of a learning curve at least with the combat.

Oh I forgot to say.  Buy Morrowind and Oblivion through GOG, it comes with many goodies like Arena and Daggerfall.  Plus some of their other spinoff games in the series like Redguard and Battlespire.

Edit: I also made an honorary mention for the original Fallout.

1. Baldurs Gate 2 - I would say, it topped the first one because of companion interactions (although the love inetrest for female characters, Anomen, was the worst character ever - thank the creators for the modding community)
2. Vampire Bloodlines - yeah WoD 'nuff said
3. Dragon Age 2 - yes, I like it more than the other parts - mainly because of Hawke (female sarcastic is my preferrence), Varric aka best companion ever and Kirkwall - for me another protagonist of the story. That city is dirty, loud and unsocial, but it is also mystical, deep and interesting
4. Knights of the old Republic and SWTOR: it's a tie in. I loved Kotor, but you only could play a human and force user without mods (and the alien mods were often wonky and you were still treated as a human). SWTOR let's you experience different races and classes and my femlae smuggler (Scoundrel, Mirilan, alternating between healing and the Ruffian spec) is my second favorite character after Hawke - and even before my Malkavian Hanna P. Lovecraft. Closely followed by my Jedi Knight (Togruta) and my Imperial agent (Chiss). SWTOR gives you a lot of freedom for your character and that I love a lot. Kotor has the better story though (although the Jedi knight story is often referred to as Kotor 3 - which is kind of fitting)
5. A tie in between Pillars of Eternity and Morrwind. PoE brings back the nice, warming Baldurs Gate feeling and Morrowind was the only ES game, that really kept me captured. I loved my dark elf lady and played her hundreds of hours.

And since I'm coming from pen & paper, here are a list of my favorite p & p rpgs:
1. Call of Cthulhu - best ever
2. WoD - especially Vampire
3. Star Wars - I'm really not a big Star Wars fan (don't like the movies apart from the old ones for example), but the world is perfect for roleplaying games - p&p and computer. You can do so much in this world - that's why I don't understand, why the movies do so little with it. They basically tell the same story over and over again and that universe is so rich.
4. Coriolis - Alien meets Firefly basically. Great system and nice world. Would make for an interesting computer game too
5. Dungeons & Dragons: my first roleplaying experience, so it will always have a special place in my heart.

Special mention goes to our Babylon 5 LARP

Honorary mentions to my top (I'd rather post them) are:

Dragon Age Origins.

Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced Edition.

Pillars of Eternity

Jade Empire

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Planescape: Torment

Gothic

Fallout 2: A Post-Nuclear Role-Playing Game

Yup. There's a lot to love in the great world of CRPG

Okay taking a cue from Highwayman667 here is my list of honorable mentions in no particular order.

1) Dragon Age 2 (Really like Hawke and his siblings plus the companions like Varric, Isabela, Anders, and Fenris.  Overall good game.)

2) Planescape Torment (First crpg that wowed me and first crpg penned by Chris Avellone I played.  The premise of the game is remarkable, and I enjoyed the companions.)

3) Fallout 1 (First crpg I played set in a post apocalypse setting. I especially like the Master and Harold.)

4)  Tyranny  (Love being the villain for a change.  Really enjoyed the game.)

5)  Gothic II  (Same Gothic goodness but with women and a bigger world.)

6)  SWTOR  (Though I have never completed one storyline I did enjoy what I played so far.)

7)  KOTOR  (The game that got me into Star Wars.  Before I played it I was 23 and had never seen a SW movie.  But for some reason the premise of KOTOR intrigued me.  I played this game a bunch of times exploring each planet thoroughly and going through each dialogue choice.  It was the first game since Blood OmenL Legacy of Kain that let me choose the fate of the world/galaxy.)

8)  FFVII:  First Final Fantasy game I ever played and I enjoyed it immensely.  I remember when Sephiroth killed a beloved character and my best character in the game at that point.  I do hope the remake comes to PC someday.)

Anyway those are the ones I cn think of right now.  If I remember more I post them.

Probably not a good decision in hindsight to have no female characters. I understand it's a prison but you could've made SOMETHING up with the barrier. Like a near village was absorbed in the radius... or something !

I don't know if it is a good idea for a village to be close to a prison colony.  I can imagine how violent and graphic the game would get with convicts raping and pillaging the village.
