Be'lakor - Abeyance
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYBgWgjjgxQ

A rare example of a modern band playing progressive melodic death unpolluted by straight-edge mallcore. Classic scandinavian school death/doom growls, drug trip influenced lyrics (unusual for Aussies), metal without fear or reproach in short. Doesn't feel like a retro-attempt in repeating 90's but a logical development of the genre, which is great.
If you into such a music, I would recommend digitally distributed FDR master against CD.

I was making the meme I've attached then this song played in my mind.

Never officially released outtake from the second album Derek And The Dominos were recording, they didn't complete it (although they recorded enough demo material for an album). Eric Clapton after that couldn't made good music anymore.
(For the record, sax legend Bobby Keys recorded an instrumental version titled Key West on his solo album):

Not a fan of Nu Metal, uh? Try those:
Nothing against that sound (it's an essential part of 90's/meanties aestetics) or nu/alternative bands who brought some decent stuff onto the table. Still unhappy with normal metal bands going nu/alt, these experiments tends to sound like a cut rate Korn or Pantera cover band.

Some curious inversions do exist, though, like Deadlock, originally a vegan metalcore band, who abandoned their roots in the favor of gothenburg melodic death as a basis, keeping outwardly groove/alternative stylistics as a throwback to the past.

Would recommend their Bizzaro World '2011 album, I'm sure the cover art alone, complete with lyrics, will make any WoD fan happy.
An example, Earthlings (Iron Maiden worship):

Even years before they wrote some interesting, to say the least, songs, like Martyr to Science:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D89N5xK-Xcs

At the first glance, a generic anti animal testing song, then realised it's about undertested (prepaid cherrypicked trials and such) pharms on the market, so they meant humans are these animal martyrs to science and business. Such a way of using metaphors is more characteristic of metal than alt/core.
