This gives me hope for a remake.
« on: November 21, 2020, 08:10:53 am »
I am a huge Legacy of Kain fan since the first Blood Omen game in '96.  For years since the end of Defiance I've been wanting a continuation of the series.  At least one more game.  Sadly Tony Jay who voiced the Elder God passed away as well as the voice actor for Janos Audron.  Simon Templeman who voiced Kain is 65 and Michael Bell who voiced Raziel is in his 80's.  The rest of the cast is also pretty up there in age.  So I don't know if they'll have the same passion as they once did.

Anyway onto my point I wish Square-Enix would remake the games with the original voice track and story.  From the first game to the last.  I found a clip by a talented 3d Modeler who created Kain from scratch using modern graphics.  This gives me hope that one day there will indeed be a remake.

Here's a remastered version of the original Soul Reaver intro:

@Highwayman667:  Yeah man when I saw that sweet looking Kain model I imagined what Soul Reaver 1 would look like with updated graphics.  I am not a graphics whore but damn this Kain model looks sweet.  I imagine what Raziel as a vamp and then a wraith would look like. But like I said I can't imagine anyone else voicing these characters.  99% of the voice actors had been around since the original Blood Omen.  They have to use the same voice tracks for the remakes if and when they decide to make one.  Talking about Blood Omen 1 if they did remake it I would hope they revise Kain's fledgling look.  In the original game he always looked annoyed and lackluster.  I know Kain was a snobby and arrogant noble as a human but that look on his face was hilarious.  Hopefully Square-Enix will see the video and rekindle the possibility of a remake/s.

I think the issue is what could the developers offer in terms of gameplay. I think most of us probably overlooked some of the lackluster aspects of the original gameplay in favor of the story.

There's also the issue of who exactly gets attached to the story. The most obvious choice is Amy Henning but I'm not sure how she feels about coming back to the series. Another idea would be to attach a big writing name to the remake. Like Chirs Avellone.

Unfortunately there...  :58_45_40:

Still, I would say the biggest issue is thinking: what exactly does a new LOK game offer in terms of gameplay ?

That's true I barely remember most of the gameplay aspects.  I do remember the first Blood Omen game was a 2d action rpg style game.  I remember the Soul Reaver games had a lot of block puzzles and interesting boss fights.  But the combat in the 3d games always felt clunky I think Defiance improved upon that.  Too bad Amy Hennig moved on from the series and most likely won't come back to it.  I would have proposed the original creator of Kain and most of the characters from Blood Omen.  The story in that game was just as good as the ones in the later games and it setup the first Soul Reaver game.  But alas I remember he was convicted of pedophilia.  So I don't see Square-Enix hiring him either.  Chris Avellone would be great and if we lived in a time where people were presented with actual evidence before condemning a man, he would have been perfect.  But I believe the reason why he was so readily dismissed had more to do than just unfounded allegations.  I always heard he was hard to work with and a bit of a dick and drunk.  So many in the industry were probably waiting for something to fire him on the spot.

The only one of those three writers still with a career is Amy Hennig.  She is the only one that has an understanding of the series and knows what long time fans want from the games.  But yeah what I remember most from the games are four things Story, Characters, Voice Acting, and Music.  The gameplay like you said was never it's strong point and this might deter future fans to the series.  But still I can imagine a LoK game with the gameplay of Jedi: Fallen Order.  I can picture Raziel running along walls and jumping between them.  I can imagine Kain blasting a hole through the wall with his telekinesis.

Anyway here's to hoping that Square-Enix wants to revive the series and make Amy Hennig an offer she can't refuse.

HOLY SHIT

I think the idea is still sound though. Get a solid writer that has a grasp on the material and the rest is just figuring out how to renew the franchise in terms of gameplay.

Honestly though, it doesn't seem that difficult to me. How many vampire franchises are out there ? How many FANTASY vampire franchises ? Take that as your pitch and the rest is just hard work.

Anyway here's to hoping that Square-Enix wants to revive the series and make Amy Hennig an offer she can't refuse.

She did sound dissapointed a while ago about the current trend of storytelling in videogames. I think if she got a "blank check" to remake the LoK franchise, with enough freedom to make her own project on her own terms, then hey ! Who knows ! We often don't talk about it but she has a lot of rep with the massive success of the Uncharted franchise.

I agree getting a solid writer for a LoK remake or any game in general is the best idea.  As for vampire franchises in gaming both LoK and the Castlevania games are dead franchises, that only leaves the resurgence of vamp games set in the VTM world to revive the genre.  But yeah I agree this is a perfect time for more quality vampire games especially if Bloodlines 2 is hopefully a major hit.

I respect Amy Hennig and agree Square-Enix should offer her a blank check to revive the series.  Money talks in this world and maybe at first she would be hesitant but with the right incentive she might come back.  Man I can imagine a remake of Soul Reaver 1 with modern graphics.  When I first played that game in '99 I thought the graphics and world was amazing.  But I know I keep saying this but they need to use the same voice tracks from the games in the remakes.  I can't imagine Kain and Raziel with different voices.  That cast was superb and brought those characters to life.

So let us hope that someday Crystal Dynamics is looking back on their old games and remember the Legacy of Kain series, and with a persuasive debater can convince Square-Enix to remake the series.

Edit:  I take back what I said about Bloodlines 2.  I did not know it HSL second game.  We will have to look for other games to revive the vampire video game genre.
