I found a group here in NYC to RP with!
« on: January 07, 2012, 12:57:09 AM »
So for those who didn't meet me at TGM '11, I've often lamented that there's very scarce gaming here in NYC.  It turns out LARPing def has a strong presence but tabletop is still fairly scarce.  BUT I did find several groups meeting when I did some searching after I got back from TGM.  There were no new games starting besides a little noob session to familiarize new players with the NWoD setting (no specific splats, just NWoD).

I had a ton of fun and can't wait to do more.  I really missed it.  At one point one of the new players was so excited, he started screaming out "FIRE, FIRE, FIRE, FIRE!!" (his job was to cause a distraction) before we managed to shut him up so that the store owners didn't think their store (where we were playing) was on fire.  It was classy.

It may have been the ST, but I tended to find most actions were too hard and I had decent dice pools.  The only times I was *really* successful was when I used WP for extra dice and maybe one lucky roll.  Meh on that part, but I guess I *was* a mortal, so...

You sound excited ,Good for you, if you had fun that is the important part. Is it part of some larger LARP charter like OWBN or CFC?

For the NWoDing rolls tend to yield more fails to balance with the increased dice-pool and I am pretty sure the developers intended for you to use WP more freely than in CWoD when balancing that system.(judging by how the rules for recovering WP are more accessible with the uniform Vice and Virtue + the fact that WP add 3 dice instead of a sure success).

It was not a LARP, it was tabletop. If I were gonna LARP, I'd contact the guy I met at TGM and go up to Westchester once a month, their LARP sounded like fun.  But yeah, man, I had just doing tabletop. To say that it's been a long time since I've been in a good tabletop game.. it'd be an understatement at the least. These people seem friendly and eager and interested in the setting.  Also, their meetup spot is not that far away.  So, I think, despite my hundred percent lack of conviction for NWoD, I'll be jumping into a Changeling: the Lost game.  I can't wait to see how the ST runs the Hedge and what rules s/he overlooks, and how they enforce that double Clarity not to get lost, then find your way out roll.  Also, I'll rail against the Virtue/Vice not being pagan enough the WHOLE time.. they don't know what they're in for.   :vampwink:

Yeah.  Although my ST also seemed to have a home rule he didn't talk about until I took a nap (I was playing a 43 year old character) for 2 hours, and he told me I recovered a WP point that I had spent earlier.  Basically, he felt that after exhausting yourself or really pushing yourself, that some sleep would recover a small portion of WP once in awhile.  Also, as I saw the clock ticking down to midnight real time (our end time) I started spending WP faster and started seeing better results.  Although I did roll three 9's out of four dice on a lucky roll. Still, as an ST I think I would have been a bit more lenient for a few of the rolls.  I really love role playing, and not roll playing, so unless something needs to be rolled or resisted, and the person has the base skills to do such a feat, let'm just do it.  Prolly just me and my rp history.

There were six players total, but three had to retire because of work the next day. So that me and two others, plus the ST.  The girl had no experience roleplaying, and the only WoD experience she had was that she had gotten as far as downtown in Bloodlines.  It's amazing she found her way to the table, actually, but she was fun to play with (she had no combat skills but had everything else).  And the guy had some limited RP experience with DnD, but liked the setting.  He got really into his character and clearly had a good time. It was pretty funny to see, but I think we all had fun, even just playing mortals. If I can get my ideal char into C:tL that will be awesome.  We'll see how flexible the ST is...

It's cool that you found a good group and had a good time.

I have that guy's contact info, too.  Gaz and I are interested in checking it out, as long as the scheduling works out.  It takes us a good 2 hours to get in or out of the city on the best of days.

Wish I could find a good PnP group here in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.  One that isn't all teenagers, because I have no desire to be a babysitter.  Sorry, kids.
An honorable man will still do the right thing, even when he knows there is no chance that he will be caught and punished for doing wrong... and even if it costs him dearly.

Um..  I found this one on the same website I found mine: http://www.meetup.com/role-playing-rpg-dallas-plano-fort-worth-texas/  Looks like they are pretty active and get decent turn outs at their meetups.

Also..

There were a ton of people looking for a quality WoD gaming group that were not part of the above group.  So if you put in a small amount of effort to be the one to organize the meetup I'm sure you could draw in all these people and prolly have a fun group within a close distance.

Here's the search with all the people..  http://wod.meetup.com/members/us/tx/dallas/

Also, for those interested...  here's the info from the Changeling: the Lost game I'm gonna be joining:

"We just finished a major plot arc as a matter of fact and are starting a new one next session so if you wanted to join it would be an ideal time! If you're interested feel free to work up a character design and background and email them to me.

Just so you have the general idea, the setting is Savannah, Georgia circa 2030 (the "near future" World of Darkness). Augmented Reality tech has taken off and now instead of smartphones everyone has AR "masks" that show a digital overlay of the world (with lots of commercial advertisements of course). There's also an element of retrofuturism in the fashion styles which have gone back to a neo-Baroque style (lots of frilly collars, overcoats with long tails, powdered wigs, etc.) I can give you more details later on.

So yeah, if you want to join we'd welcome a new member! If you write up a nice character background I'll award extra starting XP to increase your character's stats (don't worry, no one in the game is too overpowered yet)."

*Sigh*..  frilly collars and powdered wigs..  I'm really gonna stick out because I was definitely captured pre-all this zaniness.

Powdered wigs and AR eyeball implants?  Seems legit.

The million dollar question (or the $29.95 question, with inflation factored in) is "can you fuck it?"

Played in the first game tonight.  ST was okay..  maybe a 5 on a scale of 1-10.  He could have been a bit more up on the rules (being the ST), and awkwardly tried to "spice up things" that needed no spicing.  We also didn't get a ton done because one of the characters decided to throw a party and basically distract everyone with drugs and whores.   At least I got integrated with the motley (even if it was in the most paper thin and forced connection possible). Let's hope for better going forward.

Funny aside, I was talking to one of the other players who runs a Mage game.  He told me it was NWoD because that's what the players wanted, but that he was using Subjective Reality (Atlantis was just one candidate) and that things still worked basically like they did in OWoD Mage.  hahahahahahahahaha  NWoD fans make me laugh.

I didn't even think to post a follow up, but if you guys are interested:

1 - the NWoD intro adventure I'm playing in:

We've done 2/3rds of the adventure now.  First, was a lot of ranged firearms combat in this one and I knew something was fishy, but didn't check the book until I got home to make sure he was running combat right (and he wasn't!)  Otherwise tho, he's a good ST.  We'll see how the talk goes next session when I tell him he's doing it wrong (he applies Defense to firearms rolls whenever under min range for the firearm, not just within melee distance).

Anyway, a new player joined the group (the group is very open, just to teach new people about NWoD rules, etc) but came in as a cop, while the three of us were in the middle of some illegal business.  One went to check out the cop, got shot, another went, got shot, which left me, holding the handcuffed sheriff by the back of the neck.  Having just heard two shots ring out and knowing there were other sources for our money, I shot him in the back at point blank range (Morality 4, no degradation!  He *was* a scumbag kidnapper/rapist) and then went to trade shots with the new player.  Now.. maybe it's just me, but back when I was ST I'd never introduce a new player in a way that would cause the new player and old players to fight, possibly to the death.  But, with only some minor damage we managed to make it through.  We lied heavily, saying we were the FBI and working undercover against a smuggling ring, and thankfully he failed on his resist roll.  Then we went and managed to get another kidnapper onto our side who we knew was waffling about the morality of it all.  He led us to the first area where we were assaulted by a ghost and some dogs and then we hightailed it out of there when we realized the woman we're looking for isn't there, and we go to the last location for the final showdown with the kidnapping ringleader and his two henchmen.. and maybe the ghost, cuz she seemed batshit insane and on his side.  That's where we stopped.  All of us are playing regular mortals.

The Changeling Game -

Eesh..  the ST again is... mediocre.  There were less people there this time (1 less) which was better.  It also allowed me to see the dynamics of the group better.  What I saw was this.. The group just finished a major story arc and it now seems to be the players each chasing power for themselves.  And from appearances they're metagaming pretty hard in their pursuit of power.  One character is kissing the ass of the Winter Queen because he wants some entitlement and he's probably going to expect me to help him gain more personal power.  Not gonna happen.  Then there's the other character that's dead set on killing his own fetch (because out of character he knows what awesome benefit he'll get - If I were ST, I'd totally the benefit to something else). At least, this character, I've pledged to help, so he's a decent source of glamour at least while I help him.  Then there's the last character, he's seeking my help, which I gave to him out of charity, but now he's profiting from it in other ways and I'd like a piece (Wizened - spiteful).  So the next bit of info I'm withholding unless he's able to offer up something actually useful.  The other player just kindof sat there quietly following the others around.

So, my bottom line is.. I'm having fun, but I'd like a main plot that we all could follow, and I wish there were more mature (not emotionally, but.. as a gamer) role players.  I can't complain tho, it's not like I didn't play like that myself for awhile and I got a lot of pleasure out of it.  This session was definitely more productive than the last one.

Heh.  Gotta love the part where one guy gets shot, and the other guy goes to investigate it, and gets shot in exactly the same way.

In their defense, I repeat:

One of them has played D&D before this.  The other has made it to downtown in Bloodlines.  That's all the experience they have with the WoD.  In fact, D&D guy was pretty seriously disturbed by the signs of abuse and rape in said first location with ghost.  More so than I expected (but I guess I'm used to the worst).

Really, neither of them can shoot very well, I have no idea what they were trying to do attacking someone with a gun.  Ah, newbies.
