((Okay, I'm really sorry I've been MIA, not only with work, but also I really couldn't think of a good way to follow up that scene...that being said...*puts a coin in the slot*))

Azrael smiled and reached over to the small, sleek hi-fi set sitting on an ornate chest-of-drawers by the wall, pulling me in his wake as he went over. Then the first few strains of a very familiar old waltz trickled in, and Azrael pressed me closer, though it was I who began the lead.

Boxman didn't seem to mind us at all, so I led Azrael further down the hallway between the doors leading to the bedrooms. It was quieter there, away from the noise of the TV, but I could still feel and hear Mirah's steady, sleepful breathing. She seemed to be a very quiet sleeper; most ordinary Kine experience fitful sleep, and it is almost always evident through their auras, even if they aren't aware of the fact. Mirah, however, seemed to evoke in me a picture of perfect serenity, and I wondered at the back of my mind as I gazed up at Azrael if this was some kind of effect from their blood bond.

Azrael was saying something about my being a good dancer. I broke my thoughts and smiled at him, then I put my cheek against his shoulder as the melody took us in a slow sway.

"Thank you," I whispered as we made a slow 360 turn at the end of the corridor, lingered there for a moment, and began making our way back into the main living room area. "You're not half bad at this yourself." My eyes twinkled at the understatement.

Azrael glanced towards the black-paned windows as the music began its descent.
"We've got about an hour to dawn. We should get ready for bed. Rest well," he added, looking back to me, his hand on my lower back. "We need to be early at the Affairs tomorrow night; I have some business to tend to right before my performance."

I nodded against his neck. Azrael wore a scent that reminded me of oranges and musk for some reason. "Do you need me around, or am I only to see you again only at our appointed dinner table?"

I grinned at Valoris and flicked off the stereo without taking my eyes off her.

"On the contrary. New York is a dangerous place to those unfamiliar with it, it would be wise to keep you close by my side. Besides, you know our clan, if I take my eyes off you, you might end up in alliance with one of my enemies."

We made all the plesentries of breaking company, i wished her 'bonoite' like the proper portuguese cortier i had been, and she left to the other spare room. i walked into the study where boxman had nodded off in front of the television, and powered it down. he awoke with a start.

"what? huh? Hey! I was watching that!"

"No, actually, you were sleeping in front of it."

"how would you know? waltzing around the bloody flat like a bloody fairy! whats with you and the girl anyway? its not like she has anything licks like us would be interested in nowadays. ive never seen you work over someone you werent going to eat or ghoul Al, whats your fucking deal?"

"she has a certain...je ne sais quoi, does she not? Shes toreador, there can be no doubt, and yet...well...surly you know what i'm talking about..."

"Yeah, shes a complete bloody psychopath. you should've seen her fighting those sabbat back in LA. I've seen Gangrel less reckless."

"Yes thats what i meant. she has a sort of untamed quality about her, like...well...like you boxy. a smarter, FAR more attractive you."

"with a nice ass and tits."

 "Agreed."

"So, what, you gonna rev up the old engine and take a go at her or what? You told me you hadn't figured that out yet. that porn star torrie...whatsisface, he wouldnt tell you how it was done."

"Mmmm...if only. It hardly matter what my intentions toward her are, for the time being, she stays with us."

"roger that boss. where will i be sleeping then?"

i gestured airily towards the coffee table in front of the couch.

"oh, FUCK you and all. you piss spurting pig fucka."

"you complain, but in my day, we slept in coffins exclusivly."

 "yeah yeah, you fucking fossil."

As boxman kicked open the lid of the coffe tabl/coffin, i reflected back on when i HAD slept in one regularly. I may have felt a touch of nastolgia just then. I shall have to get another for my room. perhaps, black laquer with brass fittings. and a purple velvet interior, oh yes...

Boxman slammed the lid of the coffee table/coffin, and i blew out the candles. immersed in darkness i slipped into my private rooms, avoiding tripping on rouge books wiht my auspex-aided vision. i went to the french doors out to the terrace, and shut them tightly, drawing down the reinforced velvet blinds and locking them into place. i tore off my clothes and tossed them at random onto the floor, then threw myself onto the massive bed. i slid into the covers and slipped into a dream i would never remember.

I awoke as if coming out from a murky dream, full of restless whispers, fleeting shapes and sounds that both triggered and haunted my memories; memories I had locked away for centuries. The room was lit with moonlight spilling across  the bedcovers, and I lay half-awake for a moment, my face upturned towards the sky through the apartment window that sat a little ways to the right of my bed. I loved the moonlight, even as Kine I would sit up at nights after everyone else in Father's house had gone to bed, by the windowsill of my room, and watch the moon. As a girl, I would spend nights curled up in that little booknook, a half-forgotten novel in my lap, my eyes fixed on the endless rolling fields that stretched into the horizon from Father's South English estate and into the woods beyond, bathed in the milky gloom of the moon.

I lay there like that for a while, letting my senses wander beyond the walls of the room. I felt Mirah's steady warm presence - she had been asleep for hours upon hours, probably something being bound to Azrael caused. I didn't keep ghouls of my own, so I could only hazard a guess as to how Azrael might be able to influence aspects of her life and behaviour, including sleep patterns, as he wished through the blood they shared. It was possible, I mused, but I would never know for sure.

Azrael himself was already wide awake. I was a little surprised as I lay there, his aura a little bright blue spot my senses managed to find after winding their way past the doors and walk-in closet that opened to a fair-sized bathroom done in interesting gold-flecked mosaic. He was washing his face at the sink, and as I began to pull back my senses I duly noted the little details of his toilette, the smell of his cologne, the comb that ran through his hair, the antique-looking shaver that was actually electric. It was like reading a book, as Auspex caressed each object with  invisible tendrils, and I smiled to myself as I gained some small but vivid insights into the man Azrael is and was by the time he began to wrap up his routine.

I didn't have to venture very far ahead to know Boxman was also up and about. The cigarette stubs in the crystal ashtray on the bar counter were fresh, and from his absence I presumed the Brujah had gone out for a brief nocturnal appointment. Part of me wondered about him; he never stayed around long enough for me to find out just who or what he was. It seemed so unlikely that someone as sophisticated as Azrael would be accompanied by such a ragtag individual; the Brujah could be very clannish, but not as confined to their social circles as other clans. I just couldn't picture Azrael fraternizing with a group of Hell's Angels, or vice versa. I had heard of the more legendary vicious and nasty Toreadors, so I could understand the faint link that might bring these two completely different clans to meet, but..still, it was just beyond my understanding the strange partnership.

I rolled over on my side. I wasn't sure if Boxman would join the Affairs - that recollection jolted me into wakefullness as I realized I should be getting ready instead of lingering in bed. I didn't want to get up however; something felt wrong, and it wasn't physical.

Suddenly, I didn't want to go to the Affairs.

Azrael would be pissed. He had been the perfect gentleman, if a little arrogant and sarcastic at times, but he treated me with a sort of deference I didn't see in many Toreadors of our ilk. If anything else, he had been quite charming, and not even the sort of charming I'd recognised he'd get around his ghouls. I couldn't turn him down now.

So I got out of bed reluctantly, headed for the shower and made sure the water was hotter than any Kine could take. I decided to let my hair down for the evening, taking the extra effort to curl the ends with a curling-iron until the red highlights in my hair gleamed as they fell around my shoulders like a waterfall. Yanking the black gown off its hanger from behind the door, I slipped myself into it and fastened the heavy metal choker around my neck. Its design was angular, almost resembling the shapes of bat wings, and looked highly uncomfortable, but was not. I smiled at my reflection, then felt the sad irony of a great impenetrable collar whose protection came a little too late.

I lifted the silver-tipped mink shrug from its shopping bag and wrapped it around my shoulders, slipped into the black heels that stood by the door and went outside to pour myself a shot of vodka to qwell the uncomfortable feeling in the pit of my stomach.

I put the razorblade down onto the table. I picked up the little mirror, and tilted it over the glass, swirling it as i did to disolve it into the blood more quickly. i set the mirror down and lifted the glass to my lips, taking it down in a long draught.

 Ah...

these mortals and their drugs, such an interesting sensation. i went to my armoir and pulled out my jacket. i tugged it on and went to have a look at myself in the full length mirror. my senses were on fire, and so were my looks. i grinned rakishly at the preternaturally handsome man in the mirror, and he favored me likewise.

"Well, if it isnt the vampire Alexandre."

My mirror self and i shared a laugh. I went back to my wardrobe and pulled my 9mm out of the back. i checked hte clip before sliding it under my jacket into a shoulder rig. i dimpled my tie and mussed my hair, then shut the wardrobe and went out to the study. Boxman was already gone, as expected. i blew out the candles and went into the foyer.

valoris was sitting at the bar, drink in hand, showing a palpable level of discomfort. very unbecoming in one of our blood. the harpies will eat her alive if she doesnt control it.

"The harpies will eat you alive if you dont control that."

she jumped at my words; she hadnt heard me come in.

 "Control what?"

I walked over to her and poured myself a drink. just as i was about to take a sip, i jerked forward into her face and cried out "WOAH!". she fell out of her chair, dropping glass, which shattered on the kitchen tiles.

 "That. You're jumpy."

She scrutinized me for a moment.

 "You're high."

"And you're jumpy. what a pair we shall make!"

She glared at me before rising gracefully to her feet.

 "Sorry about the glass."

"Oh that? It's nothing, really. seventeenth century crystal, you can find that at any flea market."

She laughed at that, a deep, throaty laugh, with a strange, almost metallic resonance to it.

 "We should be off soon."

"Where exactly is this event alexandre?"

"Oh, in midtown. At elysium. one of them anyway."

 "That isnt an answer."

"Is it not? i find it sufficent."

Val gave me a hard look, and brushed her skirts irritably.

 "Well? Lets go."

"Certainly, I've already called a cab."

we left the apartment together, taking the elevator down to the lobby. I nodded to the doorman as i passed, and he came out with us to hold the cab door. We climbed in, and sped off towards the party.
