Cawford is a prospering city located in south Pennsylvania, USA. With a registered population of around 4.000.000 people it's not the largest city in the region, but a big one nonetheless, welcoming around 2 million business and recreational visitors each year.
Established in the early 1700s the town has seen rapid growth all through the 18th century and has undergone drastic economical changes, from a trade community which it has primarily been to the agglomeration it is presently. Nowadays, the city is listed as one of the top-something business locations on the East Coast, but most prominently as one of the most polluted cities worldwide. It's home to several major construction companies (which largely account for that pollution rating), a dozen widely known real estate agencies, famous law firms countless medium to large businesses as well as some of the finest restaurants, most prestigious theaters and most expensive hookers in state. Naturally, growing in both prosperity and popularity Cawford has over time attracted visitors other than investors and tourists.

The city is divided into 6 boroughs: North Valley, Redbrock, Annsbridge, Venice, Mornington and St. Augustine, which in turn are divided into over three dozen districts. And while there are residential as well as business or entertainment areas in each borough, it could be said that Annsbridge is generally the most entertainment-oriented of all, with its theaters and galleries, while Mornington and Valley are where the largest companies have their offices. The southern parts of Redbrock could be referred to as the slums of the city, consisting almost solely of cheap living quarters, gun / liquor stores and strip joints.

 Places of interest by location.

 Annsbridge:
Every second visitor to Cawford will make a stop at Gallery Square, which is a collection of various restaurants, cafés, theaters, nightclubs and obviously galleries, located on the upper west side of Annsbridge.

 Mornington & North Valley:
As said, several of the most prominent companies own buildings here. It's worth noting that quite a few of them are at least partially owned by Kindred, though the elders of Cawford have learned the lesson of putting none too subtle plays at clan names or even your own name on the building you own, therefore one won't find such obvious pointers here.

 Venice:
The Roseburry College, as well as various other educational facilities are located here. Then there are pubs and bars scattered here and there, which draw their clientele from the aforementioned. The southern part of Venice features a rich recreational area, along with an "alternative" art enclave.

 Redbrock:
Not much nowadays. There's the Thompson Field - an old baseball stadium, quite active in the 1950s, renovations of which have been put on hold for the last two years. Apart from that, the thing Redbrock is most famous for is the Malcolm Park which, together with the surrounding neighborhoods, is the most dangerous part of the city. By mortal standards anyway.

 St. Augustine:
A place of note would definitely be the "William & Shaw Research Center", the official face of the Marinard Chantry, home and fortress of Clan Tremere in Cawford. The exact number of it's inhabitants as well as exact layouts are known to none save the Tremere themselves. Several churches of different religions are also located here.

 Kindred of importance (gradually updated).

 Anna Johnston
Regentia of the Cawford Tremere Chantry. Secretive and contemptuous, Johnston would seem an embodiment of the Tremere stereotype, though she is more than that. Under Johnston's regency the Clan has gained much influence in the city, both political and material, and is second perhaps only to the Ventrue in terms of resources. The recent developments and renewed global mistrust of Tremere cause the Regentia much chagrin, as they could undermine her Clan's position in Cawford.

 Eric Rocher
Primogen for clan Ventrue and main advisor to the (late) Prince. It is said that Rocher has his people in virtually every part of the city administration, as well as the press and police force. And while this is a gross overestimation, the Ventrue, both his childer and his underlings have amassed a lot of control in their collective hand.

 Isabel Caliori
the Toreador Primogen. Caliori, and Clan Toreador as a whole pulls relatively little weight in Cawford's vampire structure, extending patronage over most of the local recreational facilities which aren't much of an asset apart from being reasonably profitable. Then again, the Toreador under Caliori's lead, have maintained their foothold steadily for over two centuries, so she must be doing something right (though some say it's only because no one bothered to drive them out).

 Raul Hernandez
Nosferatu Primogen and Rocher's main ally in furthering the Camarilla's cause. Hernandez is a firm believer in the sect, and also the chief reason why there's no Anarch movement in Cawford. The Nosferatu Primogen is an old, cunning and no-nonsense kind of vampire, with a very clear (and short) priority list. Only a handful of Kindred outside the Brood know of him, despite his influence.

 Joachim Neillsen
the Brujah Primogen. Neillsen had accepted the position only recently and with reservations, mainly because the Brujah intelligentsia decided to use Clan Gangrel's departure to strengthen it's own position, since the clan as a whole has become invaluable to the sect. They have a good point too – without the Gangrel, the Camarilla has only the Brujah for front line muscle.

 Victor Pina
If the Malkavians have a leader in Cawford to speak of, then that Kindred is most likely Pina. Prone to hysterical outbursts and severe mood swings, he has nonetheless earned his respect in the city and is presumed to take the vacant place of Primogen of Clan Malkavian soon.

 Pauline
Scourge. One of the very few Nosferatu in Cawford known by a large amount of Kindred, even if by Nosferatu standards "a large amount" means a handful of Kindred outside of the brood. Recently Pauline's been finding herself a little more disillusioned and a little step closer to the Beast almost every night.

 Marc Vielacados
Scourge. Tremere adept, enforcer and assistant to Regentia Johnston. Head of the Marinard chantry in loco regentiae, whenever Johnston's attention or presence is needed elsewhere.

Kindred population, as told by Dominic "Don" Poucher, Nosferatu head of communications:

"By last month's update, we're looking at around fifty Camarilla Kindred here, give or take three. The local Cam's a mix of Toreador, Brujah, Tremere, us and the occasional Malk. There's only half a handful of Rocher's clanmates around, meaning both his childer, period.

As far as the so called independents go, there's a few of the less stuck up Toreador here and there, several Gangrel up north and the unaligned portion of the Malkavians... unless they're Camarilla tonight, that's anyone's guess. What? No. No Setites at all. Why, what have you heard? I see. Well maybe you shouldn't believe everything you're told. Anyway, you might find it odd that there's no Giovanni here, considering we've got not ONE but TWO of their strongholds so close to town, but had you been around for the last century or so, you'd know why that is.

Our intel doesn't say anything on Sabbat, though that doesn't neccessarily mean there are actually none in the city, far from it, just that they know how to lay low. Surviviors from the recent attack have all pretty much been flushed out by now. But hey, a few of those "independents" that we've been keeping our eyes on may just as well be Black Hand spies, so caution would be advised when dealing with them. We know we've got double agents, question is whom they're playing for. Oh, who exactly? Hah. I ain't tellin', that'll costs extra.
"

 The City. What everyone knows:

While the majority of undertakings in Cawford is growing slowly and doing reasonably well for themselves, there are several companies that have seen their shares sky-rocket and have been steadily taking the top spots in various rankings.
In fact, even during the Great Depression, a few of those companies have not only not experienced decreases in value but seen growth and expansion, effectively lowering the general unemployment in the city, and therefore preserving Cawford's economy almost as if with a concentrated effort, puzzling economists.

Speculations of frauds and foreign funding were swiftly silenced.

 What most know:

Cawford has been a home for the undead since the 15th century, when it still was a small town of no global meaning whatsoever. Actually, the Kindred who chose to settle down here played no small part in Cawford's rise to glory. Of course the main reason behind the city's growth was the influx of people, increase in trade and some lucky administration choices - a handful of vampires cannot give birth to a metropolis. A handful of cunning vampires with interests to protect can save that metropolis from bankruptcy though, as the Depression proved. There is no consensus on who those first Kindred were exactly, but quite obviously they've had a lot of success in maintaining Cawford's prosperity. Soon, the Camarilla became interested in the city, and even though Cawford upheld it's sect neutrality for some time, it eventually was absorbed into Camarilla territory. The usual scheming and backstabbing of Kindred politics aside, the city itself didn't suffer much by this, though more and more vampires arrived and settled down, to eventually make it the Lick-infested city it is today.
Early 1980s the mantle of Prince was passed to a Brujah elder by the name of Lydia York. Under Lydia's rule Cawford has lost much of its former significance in Kindred society and Camarilla politics, to the Primogens' collective disgruntlement. Some say it was for the best, as such glory only attracted attention and problems, while others just claim this is the reason why Brujah should never be allowed to rise above the job of a sheriff.
Very recently, Cawford, as other major Camarilla cities along the East Coast of the United States, was under attack. Unlike most of those cities, it has endured.

 What some know:

The assault was part a large-scale Sabbat offensive, which had started with the fall of Atlanta over four months ago and left the Camarilla battered and weakened, even if it did come out victorious... in a matter of speaking. The open conflict as such never made it all the way to Cawford in full scale, but that one attack has had dire consequences, as both Lydia and her Childe have met their Final Deaths during a blitzkrieg assault on her domain. The Sabbat who led it have all been destroyed, but not before delivering the killing blow. The knowledge of how they've managed to even locate the Prince in her secure haven, not to mention reach her there, has went with them to their graves.

And of course, no one would dare as much as to even think that the assailants had assistance from within the local Camarilla.

 What everyone should know:

This is the setting for the "Family Business" story ("well DUH", eh?). This thread is where all the backstage stuff will be discussed, characters posted, etc. You know the deal by now, and if you don't, then you're probably not interested anyway, so go read something else because this here thread will probably be interesting to participants of the story only.
That having been said, for the time being we aren't accepting characters beyond those who I've already talked with about this, sorry – let's give the story some time to develop a little.

                Name:  Bitterman

 Clan:  Malkavian

 Generation:  11th

Age/Embrace:  Was 20 in 1964, embraced sometime after.

History:    Bitterman is the name he scratched onto his dog tags in a P.O.W. camp, he tells no one his birth name.
In 1964, Vietnamese soldiers captured him and members of his platoon.  He was listed as MIA and presumed dead.  He spent several months in a prison camp, being tortured for information he didn’t know.
His Sire, an old French vampire by the name of Claude, rescued him on a Malkavian whim.    He spent his first few years of vampirism on an old plantation deep in the jungle, surrounded by ghouls and dead bodies (Claude wasn’t overly subtle in his feeding habits).
Bitterman left (escaped?) and returned to the US in the seventies.  He ended up in Cawford.  He now owns an Army Surplus store in Redbrock and Charlie’s Tavern  in Venice, both run by ghouls.  His haven is above the tavern.
Bitterman was very active in the defense of Cawford, arming some of the defenders through his gunrunning contacts.

Appearance:  6 feet tall, muscular.  He was embraced with long hair and several months worth of beard, so his face can be different every night, sometimes with a beard, sometimes shaved.  Lately he’s been shaving his head and face bald.  Bitterman favors black t-shirts, jeans, boots, and leather jackets.  He has a modest collection of 70’s muscle cars.

Personality:  Bitterman’s psychoses is very subtle.  He often finds himself re-living Vietnam, even in the most mundane situations.  In the most extreme, such as the Sabbat assault,  he believed he was fighting Viet Cong guerillas.  The vampires who have interacted with him often don’t believe he is Malkavian because of his normal-seeming manner.  But what so many of them do not realize is that behind his eyes he is still fighting in a lost war.

Bitterman was a Green Beret, a highly trained guerilla fighter.  With this training and his obfuscation powers and enhanced senses, he is a very effective stealth combatant.

 Disciplines:  Dominate 3, Auspex 2, Obfuscate 4

Great. I like it. Everything's approved - save for the discipline values. I meant that limit as a *total* limit, for all disciplines (it was low and I'm flexible, let's make it a 9?).

Anyway, since Forumplanet hates all living beings, and those posting here in particular, I've just spent 15 minutes logging in to my PM-box, and sending one out has proven impossible, so from now on should anyone need to contact me privately - mail me.

In related news - do the pictures work for anyone?

And finally, here's a direct link to the Embracer. Though again, it's not all that useful for our purposes.

Heh, heh, whoops, sorry, forgot you had a limit for disciplines at all.  You'd think I was being really pushy, especially after beggin for a Malk.

And yeah, the pics are working for me, although a few hours ago they came up as empty frames with those stylish red X's, but then they returned to form.

                Name: Nail (Reginald Crow)
 Gender: male
 Clan:   Nosferatu
 Sect: Camarilla
 Generation: 11th
 Age/embrace: born 1924 embraced in 1952
 Disciplines: Animalism 3, Obfuscate 4, Potence 2

 History
In life Nail was known by the name Reginald (Reggie for short), he grew up in London with his parents, his mother was British and his father was a wealthy Dutch businessman.

Reggie always had quite an easy life, he was handsome, his family was rich and because of some high-placed friends of his parents and a few bribes in the right places he managed to prevent being drafted when he had reached the proper age (even though WWII was almost at an end he still wasn’t feeling patriotic enough to do his part for queen and country)
Reggie actually spent most of the war in a luxurious country-house away from all the fighting and bombing. Just living his life without a care in the world.

But Reggie’s father had other plans for him, he refused to let his son turn into a decadent spoiled little brat and told him that if he wouldn’t join the army he’d help out with the family-business which was mostly real-estate and stock-exchange. And so it was that Reggie became a businessman like his father.

It soon became apparent that Reggie was not as lazy and useless as everyone thought, he had quickly adapted to his new job and was rapidly climbing the corporate-ladder.
Although he really didn’t care much for the paperwork, Reggie had become a master at business-negotiations and his wit and charm always made sure that he sold for the highest prices and bought for the lowest. Needless to say, this newfound talent and success didn’t do much for his (already very arrogant) personality.

After a few years Reggie’s success became so great that it started to attract the attention of the local kindred and there were many (relatively young) Ventrue eager to make Reggie their first childe. Yet it was a Nosferatu elder by the name of Artemis who was granted permission to embrace Reggie.
Artemis had been observing Reggie for some time and despite the obvious lesson he had to learn about vanity Artemis saw true potential in him to become a fine member of the brood.
So as soon as Artemis was given permission for the embrace he reserved a haven in the local warrens and rushed off to embrace Reggie.

Artemis expected that Reggie would need some time to adjust to his new Nosferatu-appearance but he was sure that a week or two after his transformation was complete would be more than enough time. Artemis was wrong.
As soon as Reggie looked at himself in the mirror his whole world was shattered and he went into a depression the likes of which Artemis had never seen before. Reggie locked himself in his haven and refused to come out, for whole nights his horrible cries could be heard echoing through the warrens until Reggie didn’t have the energy to scream anymore. Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months as Reggie sat in the darkest corner of his haven wallowing in his own self-pity and feeding of the blood of the rats that crawled in.
Finally after nine months of waiting Artemis patience was through and he was just about to barge in when Reggie emerged from his haven with a huge smile on his face.

Nobody really knows what exactly happened to Reggie in those nine months of solitude, some
say he had some sort of religious revelation or epiphany, others say he just went nuts.
The only thing that was certain was that the vampire that walked out of that haven was not the same vampire that went in nine months ago. Reggie had undergone some extreme personality-changes, for example he was no longer ashamed of his twisted visage, in fact he wore it with a certain degree of pride and he was in no way the vain businessman he once was. But the most remarkable thing was that he no longer answered to the name Reggie, he now called himself Nail, he had given himself this name because he had noticed that his fingernails were extremely long and sharp (even by Nosferatu-standards).
Nail was eager to learn everything about his new vampire-abilities and vampire-society and Artemis who was pleasantly surprised by this sudden turn of events was more than willing to teach him.

Twenty years passed and Nail became an upstanding Nosferatu who had developed a passion for sneaking and information-bargaining. But London was beginning to bore him and he had always desired to go to America, so he asked permission from Artemis and the local primogen
To leave London and go to America, the primogen had his doubts at first but Artemis convinced him that Nail deserved this as payment for the excellent services he had provided.
And so Nail stowed away in the cargo-hold of one of the ships leaving for America.
Nail resided in Chicago for about ten years where once again he proved himself very useful for the local primogen. However trouble arose when Nail had found a new hobby in haunting the local medical clinic where he would pester the mental patients every night, one night a nurse walked in at exactly the wrong time and it all ended up….rather messy, this counted as a very severe masquerade violation, so serious that the prince (who never liked Nail to begin with) had Nail kicked out of Chicago. The only place for Nail to go was a city called Cawford, because the city’s Nosferatu-primogen, Raul Hernandez, was an old friend of Artemis he was the only one willing to take Nail up in the local warrens and this is where Nail has been ever since.

 Personality
Despite what people think Nail is quite sane if possessing of a somewhat twisted sense of humour. Nail takes great pride in his clan and his looks and if anyone dares belittle him because of them he will belittle them back twice as hard (and if that doesn’t work there are always other ways to “convinceâ€? them).
His sire had always taught him that kindred that weren’t Nosferatu were never to be trusted (especially the clans that start with a T) Nail has always taken great care to heed this advice.
Nail is very indifferent when it comes to kine, he sees them as food that can come in handy every once in a while, it is for this reason that he has a ghoul in Cawford, a wannabee goth-rocker unoriginally named  Skull, Nail uses him for info about what the word on the street is and if Skull isn’t useful in some way Nail treats him like a dog and usually denies him his weekly portion of vampire blood, the only thing Nail appreciates about the kine is some of the music they produce, he has a fondness for rock and roll from the sixties and eighties and he is most definitely weird Al Yankovic’s  number one fan!
All in all Nail is quite polite to most kindred even though he doesn’t trust them, he is never out to make enemies and as long as people treat him well he won’t be the one to start a fight (although he will most certainly be the one to end it)

Even though Nail has killed his fair share of innocents, his humanity isn’t spectacularly high or low, Nail has never frenzied as far as he knows, ninety percent of the time Nail is in total control over himself.

Nail isn’t exactly one of the major players in Cawford, but he is far from an unknown seeing as one of his jobs for the brood is dealing with the other kindred (he is still good at business negotiations), he will never trust any kindred that aren’t Nosferatu but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to handle them.

 Appearance
Nail suffers the traditional Nosferatu-deformities (baldness, long sharp yellow teeth, pointy ears etcetera) The only thing different about him when compared to most Nosferatu is his extremely long and sharp fingernails. He is also quite tall (just a little under six feet) and extremely skinny. He wears a brown jacket with a torn up black T-shirt under it and black jeans  also horribly torn-up and pretty filthy from the sewer-water he has to wade through all too often.
The only really characteristic piece of clothing he wears is a red tie that hangs loosely around his neck, some say he wears it because it reminds him of his life as a businessman.

I'm familiar with the Embracer. I find it a bit limited, myself.

This is a web-based generator. It's good if you want to play a PnP game and know the rules already, because this generator doesn't care if you step out of bounds.

VampWizard is just that, a wizard. A game of 20 questions builds your char for you, and the only things you can actually choose on your own are clan, demeantor, and nature.

Still, it makes a pretty character sheet. This is actually a fairly good tool for the beginning PnPer, as is the Embracer.

What interests me most at the moment is this. I'll be testing this at home later today. The visual illustration of the character is supposed to be truly horrible, but actual incorporation of the rules and ease of use seem to have been major goals. If this is good, then an online PnP group may just come to be after all...

But I ramble, as I often do. Carry on, Lancea. I like what I see here.

It's not that I'm a fan of the Embracer but limitations aside it's not bad, and is a fast way to judge if a character isn't too powerful for his generation (or not, apparently :P).

One more thing - Grendel - what's Bitterman's perspective on other Malkavians and their, uh, quirks?

Anyway, both characters are ready to go as far as I'm concerned.

Well, he knows Malks are insane, that comes with the less-thatn-invigorating knowlege that he himself is insane.  He's fairly loyal to his clan (or as loyal as he can be to whatever type of structure Malks use), which comes with an aptitude for dealing with their "quirks", but that doesn't mean he always understands them.

I was working on an intro post in my head yesterday, and I concluded that he doesn't believe in embracing, because he views being a Malkavian as a curse within a curse.

 That help?

Oh, yes I most certainly am.
Just having a lapse in the creative process of creating my character... should be done soon in any case.

Well, the way it's handled in Raven's seems to work well. I'm open to opinions though, so we can add that chance element to it and see if it works. Though that will probably stretch things out quite a bit.

Anyway, the first post is up. I'm one for deep backgrounds, so it's on the lenghty part. I'll ease of the politicking somewhet once we get started proper.

Grendel, Sodom, mont - assuming I didn't bore the living bejeezus out of you, you're free to post your intros and go glare menacingly at Crazy, maybe she'll be done faster. Kidding.

Oh, and this part bears repeating - for now further player characters aren't accepted, but will later on. If you'd like to join - send me a message (please allow some time for PM issues, it's touch and go with PM nowadays).

There's my post.  I wasn't sure first person was the right way to go, but it came out that way (writing for me is more like shi...excreting than creating)

Mont, 'Legs, could we get a character post at least?  I like to know who I'm playing with.  (Although if 'Legs ain't a Tremere I've lost a bet)

It's late and I'm talking wierd.  I'm going to bed.

                Name: Julian Massicus
 Clan: Ventrue
 Generation: 11-th
 Age/Embrace: born 1917 embraced 1954
Disciplines: Dominate 3 (Command, Mesmerize, The Forgetful Mind), Fortitude 2, Presence 4 (Awe, Dread Gaze, Entrancement, Summon)

History: Born, Matteo Giuliano, 1917 to italian father and irish mother. Grew up on the streets among both italians and irish. Joined both gangs early on. He was a prodigy, who did well in school and did well on the streets. Foresaw the end of the depression and made deals with the gangs and different businessmen. One of these businessmen was Eric Rocher, a Ventrue Kindred. Who recognised Giuliano's skill and took him as retainer. Rocher had his hands into the Cawford underworld but wanted to be a legit businessman so he turned the shadowy part of his businesses to his childe, the beautiful Sorana and to his new retainer Julian.

Sorana with her experience dealt with the business part and Julian with his contacts in the gangs of Cawford took care of the muscle part. He eventually became known as the "go-to" guy if you ever needed anything, any-thing - Julian was the guy to call.

Sorana wanted to embrace Julian, but Rocher wanted them both sharp, competing and at eachothers throats so he embraced Julian himself.

Julian has since kept his "go-to" guy persona, set up some money-laundering firms such as a café or two, a bookshop and an IT-firm. Although they are all led by Sorana, it was Julian who made it happen.

He keeps up to date with the black market dealings, most importantly, the gun trafficking business. Cawford is a rather important thoroughfare for the gun traffic, many of the importers/exporters are Rocher companies in stark competition with Giovanni interests. Also, lately Julian has put together a net of informators, with contributors from the underworld as well as the high-society, which has even gained the admiration (and the suspicion and envy) of the Nosferatu.

At the recent Sabbat incursion, Julian not only procured the weapons and arranged security for Kindred dignitaries but also fought in one of the decisive battles, leading by example (an almost forgotten Ventrue virtue).

Appearance: Julian looks like a normal built man in his mid 30-s, has the long face and long straight nose of his italian father and the strong jaw and high cheek-bones of his irish mother. Black hair, always impeccably combed straight back. Always wearing a tie and suit. Drives a black-grey 1995 Mercedes SL 500 coupé (the last year Mercedes made a Mercedes car... as far as he's concerned).

Julian was a criminal businessman before his embrace. Afterwards he became a bloodthirsty criminal businessman. Which makes him an intelligent corporate predator, with a complete lack of respect for human life and property. He has respect for Camarilla leaders but allegiance only for his sire and Clan elders.

Julian knows he can handle more power and he definitely craves it, unfortunately his "runt of the family" status stops him from achieving it... for now.
