Title: Forum Downtimes and Errors
Post by: Signothorn on March 24, 2019, 10:08:51 pm
Just a head's up. Sam is doing some maintenance on the forums, upgrading mostly, but also fixing some errors in our database that he's working diligently to pin down. The forum may have a little downtime or errors over the next week, but it's nothing to worry about.  :thanku:

The whole site was down earlier, partially due to an aggressive MSN bot. Sam adjusted a setting on the server side that should help.

My first thought was "MSN still exists?"

MSN probably thought "PlanetVampire still exists?"

Wasn't MSN an email provider?

Wasn't MSN an email provider?

It was also search before bing. It aggregated news ect too, and had a homepage similar to AOL's. I know it's a weird explanation that doesn't make much sense, but that's what I was told.

Just wanted to ask...
Why the attachments disappeared from PM now? The past time it was reduced to bogus 200 kb, now I can't see the attachments field  at all.

I'm really sorry, but as part of the troubleshooting, all modules have been uninstalled. This was a module. Spoiler tags, karma and more are temporarily unavailable, but I should be able to reinstall all or most forum mods once we figure out the problem in our database that is preventing us from upgrading SimpleMachines. The forum downtime is likely do to a database/apache error. I won't ask Sam to explain it better, because he's busy trying to fix the issues, going line by line through the db.

Thanks for everyone's patience. I can't give a specific date when things will be back to normal 100%, but it will be ASAP.

This is probably also the reason why we can't access the files section from the forum anymore, yes?

Yes, as well as the chat box.

You're wasting a momentum created by Bloodlines 2 announcement since forum registration does not work for nearly a month as well.

As I recall, you mentioned that you had a webdev background in the past. Would you be willing to assist Sam figure out the issue and repair the database, so we can put the issue to bed? I don't have the background and I think Sam might appreciate another set of eyes on it. We'd really appreciate it.

Will be glad to be of assistance.
Classical programming background, but I did my share of webdev too and once was a tech admin of a niche forum (phpbb then fluxbb engine).
My health is still far from satisfactory, but it will do for some messageboard tinkering.

You are correct, MSNbot itself no longer exits, having been superseded by BingBot. However most of BingBot's IP addresses still reference "msn.com" due to Microsoft's laziness. Hence when I looked up the last few entries in the server log prior to a freeze, all the IP addresses there were xxx.msn.com . Nice cat by the way, looks just like one of my own cats!
Anyway, I've managed to iron out most of the issues. Registration is now working again, as well as creating new sub boards. I've got PM attachments to work again, as well as several other mods (such as spoiler tags, Youtube and BBCode). I still have to fix up Karma yet. Going forward I'm making a list of all the additions to the forum database that mods do, just in case something like this happens again. It seems uninstall/reinstallation of mods does not clean up after the mess it makes in the database. Deicide, if you wish to be of assistance you are more than welcome. If you add me to Skype (name VoiceOfTheMysterons) I will have a chat with you!
In the meantime, thank you for the patience everyone.

My reaction was more "what is this bot and what was trying to to?" (I mean, it was an hacker or what)

Question for administrators, has anyone from Bloodlines 2 team contacted you? It would be a nice gesture if they put Planet Vampire link on some of their official media online, especially if we take into account just how much the Bloodlines was preserved over all these years by admins and modders here.

I can only speak for myself, but nobody has contacted me directly, outside answering my questions on Twitter, which they do for everyone. The devs are very engaging to all communities where possible, mostly on Twitter.
