Database Error
« on: January 16, 2020, 09:30:38 PM »
I recently got "Databank Error" on this website. Is that just me, or is it a general problem?

If the problem is known, are there any tips or recommendations?

Sometimes the site isn't online for a few hours but I've never seen such thing

If it's a database error. It will be that it can't communicate with mysql database server at that moment of time.

Tip: Come back later. Usually outages like that don't last too long.

Nothing you can do on your end.

OK. Nevertheless, the error has been annoying since the last update. This has occurred far too often since then (since the last update). I hope that will improve soon.

This error has been quite difficult to diagnose because of the lack of any percievable action being taken. After glancing over the error logs and coming across this...: https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=563245.0
I decided on a whim to try accessing the forum from a computer with an IPV6 connection (which I do not have at home). Turns out, because IPV6 addresses are longer, this caused the session variable to be larger than expected, and that appears to be what is triggering the error. The current software for this forum (SMF 2.0.17) lacks official support for IPV6 and a new version has been in the making... for years (just like this site, really :-(  ). It also explains why I've never seen this happen on my end at home. Since the world is painfully slowly moving to IPV6 (my current ISP seems to lack any plans to do so) I've managed to make a temporary workaround by increasing the max length of the session variable as suggested in the above link. I'm not willing to disable IPV6 on the server because I'm starting to come across more and more people worldwide unable to get unique IPV4 addresses due to the global shortage (especially Belgium and Russia, most of the population there have to put up with Carrier-Grade NAT, with one IPV4 address being shared by potentially thousands of broadband connections!).

Anyway, long technical gibberish aside: if you do notice this error again, please let me know.

The problem is still there. I need several attempts to get into the forum.

My System:
Microsoft Edge (Internet Explorer also used for testing. Same result.)
Windows 10 Pro
AMD 2700x
Nvidia 2060 Super
16 GB

More or less current Standard

*EDIT*
One more note. Once I have logged in, the website runs stable for me.

I came here to report it in my thread (next thread down) because my guess is it's related to the missing Emotes and Tools.

I just tried to give an Embrace to someone who answered my question, and got the error.
Trust me, most of the names I have been called you can't translate in any language...they're not even real words as much as a succession of violent images.

I have also been having this issue for some time which has made viewing this forum almost impossible. It only just recently got to the point where I only get it every 6 times out of 10, so I can start viewing forum more or less.
I don't really know if there is much I can do on my side especially since my connection can be quite shitty at times.
