Title: Re: It's not a joke this time )
Post by: [archive] Skyra_to_Hollow on March 28, 2010, 05:04:00 AM
The site is being overhauled again, but this time it's no joke.  Over the past couple years, many of our members have noticed that the forum itself pretty much took up the role of Content Management System.  This was primarily due to deteriorating capabilities on the web server, preventing staff members from using it effectively as a CMS for a variety of files and services. So...we fixed the problem.

We present...the new and improved Planet Vampire.

I think I shall let Zylon or Moocha have the first relevant comment. Just to see which way the wind is blowing you understand.

Im not going to wait, if its no joke,
Where is the shortcut for Active Topics?
Why did you put some low res cheesy looking junk image with a bad font choice as the title art? (No offense Signothorn, I know it was probably you but you guys have to do something about it)

Sorry for bashing but someone had to say something without waiting for the world to end.

We hadn't made any final decisions about the artwork. In fact, we'd like some contributions from you guys and gals at some point but we'll need to compile a list of what is needed. It's not going to be perfect and it's not going to please everyone but we had no choice, we weren't going to go live for a couple weeks but IGN's hosting was progressively getting worse and the support we were getting from their end was even worse than we have implied publicly. Basically, support doesn't exist anymore period, their lack of support drained us to the point where we became stagnant because we didn't have the tools we needed to do what we needed to do to make this site reflect the ideas of staff and everyone in the site.

Essentially, IGN/Gamespy was telling the community it wasn't relevant to them anymore and their in-actions showed they really didn't care if the community just died. We, the staff, were left with a choice to either do nothing or to act and do whatever we could to not only maintain but to grow the community and our choice was pretty easy. Please be patient with us but give us feedback and suggestions too. The active topics link is a good idea, one that didn't come up in our previous convos so that's noted.

I'd be happy if the forum CSS was changed so that locked topics don't have a line going right through the center of the title. Whoever made that decision didn't really think things through (see the Bloodlines Fan Creations forum).

I just went to the Planet Vampire portal page and... what the hell? Unlike most other "Planet" sites, the portal page looks completely different from the forums. Where's the "Planet Vampire" header? Doesn't IGN provide a standard layout template for these things? I'm quite confused here.

They do provide a standard layout.  Unfortunately, the CMS they gave us sucks.  It is inaccessible 95% of the time, preventing us from doing simple updates like adding news articles.  Worse, they have outright stated that they are unable/unwilling to provide us with tech support for the web hosting service.  That means no IIS changes, no database integration, nothing.

For these reasons, we've set the old server to auto-redirect to our new site, which is operated independently from IGN altogether.  Also, since IGN legally owns the graphics (they made them, after all) we will be using different graphics.

IGN isn't hosting the new site any longer so we are free to design the site the way the community sees fit. It's no longer a priority to the staff to look like other "Planet" sites, do you think it should be? The idea behind the change is to allow the community to decide on the content provided and how it's displayed. Nothing is written in stone at the moment, except for the decision to ensure the community survives the BS that's being dealt to us right now by going with a new CMS and site structure. Believe me, we took every avenue possible to reach out to IGN and get their support to upgrade the site and we would get responses like this:

When we got this message a few months ago, we realized there would be no help to fix the issues with the site or to make the upgrades needed. The news system doesn't work most of the time and is also not supported any longer, not to mention a possible dangerous exploit that could have given someone the ability to delete the site without an active login. The choice was pretty easy to make tbqh.

Well, the hosting services being discontinued was known (that was why Paine's files were on the main page)... but they discontinued support to the main sites at the same time?

Yeah, the ticket was actually to grant non_app, Dante and Wesp access to the news system and FTP, which are unrelated to the hosting service. EvilHomer last replied to us with a denial to help us adapt the CMS from PES and an admin at PES also tried to contact a different IGN admin but they never responded. Now they don't even reply to us when we send PM's ect. There is a board for site directors for all the Planet sites but as of a couple weeks ago, the last post there was from sometime last year from a site director asking for help.

Well now I'm even more confused. Is the entire Planet system being taken down? And if so... why are the forums still running?

I'd say just keep using the old Planet Vampire header. IGN obviously doesn't care anymore, and frankly it's ten times better than what's currently on the portal page. But if you can't use it... geeze, at least make it so it doesn't fill half the screen and look like something from a goth fanfic GeoCities site.

It doesn't look like they are taking them down, they are apparently not spending any form of labor in upkeep. The domain "planetvampire.com" is owned through sometime in 2012. They do make money on banner clicks, just apparently not enough that they see fit to employ people to fix issues. If a site or function goes down, they simply have an "Oh well..." attitude about it. If this is not the case, it's their own fault that this is the impression of our entire staff and likely all of the Planet site directors, otherwise they would likely be posting on the boards if they felt IGN would actually bother to listen to them.

On the one hand, it sucks that we're losing the bandwidth and name recognition that came with being a member of IGN's Planet Network.  But on the other hand, this is the only way for us to actually bring about the plethora of overdue updates that you guys brought up in April and November of last year.

The only limitation I've imposed on this process is in regards to the content generated by IGN itself: original site graphics, photos taken by IGN staff, or anything else over which they can claim a copyright.  Just about everything else is fair game.  I'm handling the legal aspects of all of this, so if you guys have any questions or concerns, please ask.

Also is there any good reason to stay with the Gamespy forums provided? I seem to recall it had some security issues not too long ago.

Thought so, I recommend putting an ad on the domain to make some revenue because Ill be stright with you its not for lack of love but im not going to put out money for donations and since I hate to see this site goes down or running desperate out of lack of donation money(Iv seen sites with bigger communitys running into trouble like that) I think the sooner you get this secure the better. I know people dont mind gaming related ad on the forum as long as its not popups and I vaguely recall 1 or 2 on the old front page which IGN probably uses to pay for the domain or at the very least do some awkward poll to see where you stand on this because better to find out sooner than later in this case.

We need a new banner for the files area first but we're always open to suggestions. We need some banners made and we could even rotate them. I didn't really care for the new banner at first but it's grown on me. Show us what you've got and if people like it better then we'll try it out. It should match the color scheme of the theme we're using though. This can even be an ongoing thing. The current banner isn't specific to either of the two games that are already released and I believe Jav did that on purpose. I think we need to be forward-looking to the MMO so that was good thinking on his part. We aren't stagnating anymore, we're honoring the past but moving straight ahead. Damn, my sleeping pills are kicking in.

I really think that's a bad idea. I know you think the world will end if you re-start on fresh forums but people will re-post, create new history. By sticking with these forums you are simply just getting in deeper and deeper and creating a domino effect. 'we cant drop these forums because of all the posting history' yet the longer you stay on them the deeper the history goes so you are even inclined less. If what you say about the support for the planet network is true its silly NOT to assume its only a matter of time before the same happens to these forums. Make the change now while its still under your control rather then until they pull the plug.

Posting history really isn't THAT critical. If you have a good community it will be a hiccup little more. I just had a database crash, lost over 3 months of postings. My community shrugged and didn't miss a beat. Posting away and making up for it. I am getting 6-8 new posts a day more so then BEFORE the crash! LOL

Yeah, "We'll do it live" Saturday, the stickied threads just haven't been posted yet. We're told there still may be a way to archive old thread data without access to the forumplanet database but it's unknown what's involved to do it. We'll be switching forums starting Saturday though. Nobody's being forced to come with us but there will no longer be forum moderation or any staff support here after that time.
