                Now for only $39.95...PlanetCyril t-shirts!

  money_eyes   money_eyes   money_eyes

http://archive.planetvampire.com  is back...a little shaken, but no worse for the wear.

Some of you are pissed right now.  Some of you are laughing your asses off.  Others are just glad that it's over.  Many more are probably just wondering "what in the ever-loving hell was that all about?"

This idea had been around for at least a couple years...the question of what would happen if Cyril took over PlanetVampire, as he sometimes claimed he would do in years past.  Some time last year -- I think it was in October, and I think we had been drinking -- we began to kick around the idea of making it actually happen.  Just for the hell of it.  Like some kind of Bizarro Jesus abomination, the thing grew legs and struck us all as being both hilarious and utterly horrid.  After some more serious discussion we eventually began to put it into motion.  So...I guess you could say this little stunt has been 6 months in the making...

 - Signothorn, Javokis and I played the parts of the dumbfounded "old blood" who were thrown out into the street by the old trickster
 - Dante was purposefully kept out of the loop for as long as we could manage...we didn't want to endanger his PES status, in the (likely) event that IGN fired the entire PV staff
 - Gaz contributed some of the scheme's most horrible components, and helped get it off the ground
 - Cyril played himself.  At first we weren't sure if he would go for it, but when we brought him on board, he played himself like nobody else could.  Thanks a lot for your help, and for being such a great sport about this, Cyril!

Love it or hate it, I think it's safe to say that this prank has been pretty eye-opening to nearly everyone in our little community.  So...laugh, cry, curse our unborn children, or just shrug.  In a few days we will follow up with a more serious discussion about how we can take this input (as well as the input during the prank) and turn it towards some solid improvements for the site and the community.

Impressive stuff, guys. I'm most impressed by how you got Cyril in on it, as when I looked back on his old posts, he had the new purple moderator-looking name and everything, so I realized that it was the same account and not a gag account made by Skyra or something.

I laughed my ass off when I first saw the "Planet Cyril" heading after reading about Cyril wanting to buy the site for so long, but when I went on the board and a lot of people were acting like it was for real, I started to feel really freaked out and kinda alienated. I don't have anything against Cyril, but I like the "management" the way they are now and have been.

Actually, it was a joke account, separate from his others. We were initially going to promote it to a moderator status but we knew we would need to have Cyril post on it so we used other means to change the name color. He wasn't a true mod, your IP addresses were safe ect.

I have to say I've been watching this whole thing with this freaky mix of pride and horror.  You know, like when you realise that perhaps drinking and smoking under powerlines on a Satanic cult burial ground while pregant wasn't such a great idea.  You want to love the baby, but you just KNOW it's gona distroy mankind.

I'm really quite impressed with how well everyone was "got."  The REALLY funny thing is, that if forumplanet hadn't gone to that subscription thing for users, we wouldn't have been able to pull it off without a significant amount of tap dancing.  It was as if the universe itself conspired with us.  Makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

On the outside I still feel dirty though.  So very, very dirty.

Was kinda obvious it was an April fools thing, or it would have been a hell of a coincidance. I think the best supporting actor was oddly enough Offkorn, we now know on whos side he would be in a Sabbat siege.

If I may offer an independent perspective of someone who just started watching this site a few weeks ago when I bought Bloodlines ...

Technically, this prank was well done. Whether it's really a good idea if some moderators get their lulz at the expense of pissing off a substantial part of an already decimated community is another question. I definitely wouldn't have done it on one of my sites.

However, there's one thing that's *really* irritating about this whole thing. When I looked for Bloodlines fansites a while ago, I concluded that Planet Vampire is basically a ruin. The "Patches" page is outdated by 10 months. Detailed information of the game (and especially game mechanics) is lacking; I found Gamefaqs to be a better source of information. Information about mods is hard to come by. The FAQ is a joke - it looks as if it was written even before the game was released, there is no technical help section whatsoever. The forums are dominated by an odd figure that shoots down interesting discussions with religious zeal if they don't fit into his view of canon, abusing other members on a regular basis, and throwing around insults ("you're an idiot", "morons", "you fucking idiot", etc. - that's just from the last few days), no moderator seems to care, it's certainly something that kept me from participating so far.

I wouldn't say anything if the staff of this site actually *was* dead. Such things happen, sites die, and Bloodlines is an old and discontinued game. However, the staff apparently is *not* dead. It's just that instead of providing the site with content and updates that are desperately needed, they appear to spend their time playing an elaborate prank on their own community. This was a prank that needed time, effort, and dedication to prepare and pull through. All of this time and effort *could* have been used to improve the site instead, like adding content or at least *trying* to maintain a more open climate for discussions, but wasn't.

Please believe me, I don't have any quarrels with anybody here. I'm not just some angry old member faking a new account (I can prove that if there's doubt). I'm just a neutral observer that recently developed an interested in an amazing game that escaped his radar so far. And as such, I have to say that I regard it as an extremely poor choice to spend time playing pranks on one's community while at the same time neglecting the site and the forums.

I really urge the staff to rethink their priorities. Thanks for listening.

If by 'interesting discussions' you mean 'trying to convince people that the Cabbie is Caine despite ample proof to the contrary', then you're an idiot. Shutting down that conversation is no different than shutting down the 'Is Beckett a Werewolf?' conversation.

If by 'interesting discussions' you actually mean 'interesting discussions', then you're talking about someone other than me who I've never met or even heard of.

Oh, and you may want to look up the definition of 'canon', as it's not something that's subject to personal opinion.

Offkorn posted:
then you're an idiot

Well, thanks for proving my point, I guess. As I mentioned in my previous post, it's not the opinions that you present which I find offputting (I agree with many of your opinions), it's rather the imho abusive and overly aggressive way how you present them. With your obvious knowledge about oWoD, you could be a Beckett on these forums, enlightening people while still encouraging individual thought and respecting differing opinions. With your zeal in attacking and insulting people who dare to present different opinions, you rather end up being a Grünfeld Bach though, which is a shame imho.

Anyway. That's not really on topic here. However, the fact that you responded to this, and only this, part of my post, illustrates the problems I tried to outline.

In all the discussions I've seen, you were the only person who mentioned the currently rather poor state of the site. You even made concrete suggestions on what to improve. In my post, I said exactly the same, I basically advanced your agenda in that regard. And of all people who posted in this thread, I was the only one so far who did that. I presented you an opportunity to go beyond the "good prank / bad prank" discussion that is developing here, and re-focusing on the point that this site could benefit immensely from some updates.

I'm aware that my post also criticized your behavior, And I must admit that I was curious how you'd answer to the post. Would you focus on improving the site, or would you focus on the personal aspects regarding your behavior? What's more important to you - improving the site or justifying your own behavior in discussions? Seeing that you only replied to the latter and totally ignored the former (although it my post would have been a good opportunity for you to re-focus the discussion on site improvements), the answer appears to be a bit sobering.

I have to give the moderators of this site alot of credit for doing something completely unique, and no, not just because it was all about myself. They have really stood out as very creative, crafty, and persistant people and as long as they have that attitude and do not take everything so seriously the potential of what they want is endless.                 It was fun, but I can feel the aggrevation I know some of you wanted a major change and the mods are doing it now. Iam unqualified and would only bring this site to the grounds. I also can see that alot of old Vtm players and people who just seen it on google have been viewing the site and were curious, and to them I say that this community is one of the closest around and with the MMO coming out may should consider joining this site and bring some ideas.

Yeah guys.  I mean the whole idea behind this was to have a laugh together.  I mean, we obviously knew there'd be one or two people *coughcoughoffkorncough* who'd fail to see the humor in it.  The fact that it turned into something more than just a joke and became this outlet of issues is not a bad thing.  Like Skyra said, there will be time to post more about said issues and concerns soon, but that's not really what this thread is supposed to be about.  Please don't go turning something done in good sprits into another angst thread.

I think it was a win.  The wool was soundly pulled over the eyes of most of you.  We got more posts in a couple of DAYS then we have in a couple of weeks, and got to see this kind of shambeling parade of former members of the community who chimed in with their 2 cents.  It was pretty cool.

well played ! after a long while last night when i checked it, I was astonished on "what just happened? " I was wondering Master.cyril took over the community, I knew his plan about taking over PV and i thought he finally made it. I dont know cyril quite well since I didnt wanted to get involve in Forum Politics ! I didnt know whether he was qualified or unqualified to own the site, and frankly I didnt cared that much.

But something that took over me it was the sentence " If you want something Very much You Will Get it " and I started to believe  in it since i remembered Cyril wanting this since long time ago and he wanted it pretty much !

now smt else !why the colors of Skyra and Jakovis changed ? that is quite interesting !

well any way That was the biggest Prank I got Today ! and well Played happy

My boyfriend got me worse than you guys last night though.  He's in the US Air Force stationed in South Korea.  Got me last night (was April 1st for him), goes..."Hey...I'm being transferred to Iraq."  I cried, made myself sick, ran over worst case scenarios...

 Then he says

"Which would suck except it's APRIL FOOOOOOOOOOOLSSSSSS"

So, well done, PV.  happy   Next time try crushing someone's heart, lol

Hey, guys.  I've only been on the forum for a short while but already knew of Master Cyril by reputation.  It was a good prank.  Props to Cyril for playing along.

In regards to everything else, I'd like to request that the forums in the Bloodlines-help section get a clean up.  Getting that game to run can be real pain, but the answers are in the forums if someone has the patience to read through several years of stuff to find them (I did, but it took awhile).  A little restructuring would help.

 Happy April Fools, y'all.

I'm perfectly polite until someone reveals themselves to be logically and/or mentally impaired. When such occurs, I have a responsibility to call a spade a spade. If you try and dance around the issue with such people, they'll just continuously try to pass off obvious fallacies as factual information. Best to just swift-boat them and be done with it rather than dragging it out.

I don't attack people who have different opinions. I attack people who refuse to believe the facts despite piles of evidence being thrown in their faces.

As for helping people, well, I guess you haven't been paying very close attention to my posts or even looked at the title under my avatar. I'm a sociopath. I hate people. If someone can't be bothered to help themselves.... Despite that, I still give them a hand every now and again (masochism is a bitch). I only get nasty when they try to claim that their fever-dreams somehow count as an authoritative source of information.

Anyway. That's not really on topic here. However, the fact that you responded to this, and only this, part of my post, illustrates the problems I tried to outline.

I didn't respond to that part of your post because I already made my feelings known in great detail about that topic earlier. Both recently earlier and years ago earlier. Once the changeover was revealed to be a joke, there was no point in continuing to bitch about it.

I don't enjoy repeating myself. Not. One. Bit.

You don't seem to get that this has happened before... despite apparently having read my posts on the subject. Nothing happened in response then, nothing will happen now.

Do I agree with what you said (excepting that the Cabbie/Caine discussion deserves anything but to be exterminated with extreme prejudice)? Obviously, but there's no reason for me to come out and say so when I've already said the exact same thing twice before.

I focus on the parts of people's posts that either; A) matter, or B) reveal that person to be horribly mistaken and/or retarded. What's the quickest way to shut down someone pulling random bullshit out of their ass? Highlight the parts of their post that reveal them to have no clue what they're talking about. Responding to every single part of a post (as I did right here) is usually a waste of effort when used against people who can't form a basic train of thought. I have better things to do than fight a series of shadow-wars.

Yeah guys.  I mean the whole idea behind this was to have a laugh together.  I mean, we obviously knew there'd be one or two people *coughcoughoffkorncough* who'd fail to see the humor in it.  The fact that it turned into something more than just a joke and became this outlet of issues is not a bad thing.  Like Skyra said, there will be time to post more about said issues and concerns soon,

Well, what are the specific reasons that speak against doing that now?

I won't debate the value of having a laugh together. Personally, however, I prefer to switch to the amusement after the work has been done. Judging from the state of the site, I unfortunately get the impression that the amusement took place instead of doing the work.

I mean, please try to understand my perspective. Some weeks ago I buy VtMB, try to get some information about it, and find this site, which apparently has been abandoned by its staff. Pages aren't updated, the "Patches" page is 10 months outdated, the forums have members insulting others with no moderator saying anything. The first thing that I see from the mods is that they invested a substantial amount of time to play an elaborate prank on their own community. They even say that they were willing to risk their positions over doing so (see first post). Then, during the prank, a couple of quite obvious problems with the site get mentioned, and the only reaction from the mods is "It will be discussed soon". Why "soon"? Why not now? I mean, they can't really tell me that they have no time to do it now, not after spending so much time and effort on a prank, can they? What reason do they give me to believe that they really care for this site? They may very well do, I don't know them, but all I've seen so far is a neglected site and a prank that they pulled through in full knowledge that it might get them fired. If you were in my shoes, how much confidence would that raise for you that they actually care for the site, and have the will and energy to improve it?

I mean, for example, how difficult is it to update a single page (which happens to be important for newcomers) when you have 10 months time for it? The "patches" page still lists v5.3 as the latest version of the unofficial patch, while the staff is busy playing pranks. They might be nice and great people and all, but I do have a point here, don't I?

Anyway. I hate to be a complainer, so I took the source from the "patches" page and updated it. I added links to the patch versions since v5.4, some basic information about how the patch works (I found the previous text a bit confusing), explained how localized versions are affected and what the "basic" and "plus" versions do, added a complete changelog, fixed the line wrap of the changelog, and fixed an html error which caused everything after the "Unofficial Patches" headline to be displayed in upscaled font. It still isn't perfect, but at least this updated page acknowledges that there are versions of the unofficial patch past v5.3. Some of the links to Filefront aren't working, personally I'd suggest to remove them - are there really good reasons why someone would want to use an outdated version of the patch? However, the links are present on the current page, so I left them in. Here's an updated "patches" page, good for 10 downloads, which should be enough for someone of the staff getting it: Rapidshare link

Now, could we please update this page, please?

Thanks, I'll get this fixed tonight. As Skyra said, we'll be absorbing ideas to fix up the site/add new content and figuring out how to accomplish it with our busy schedules. As it was stated in this whole mess, we aren't paid employees and no we don't have perks other than a larger avy and other account settings like having a different colored name. We just brought Dante aboard to PV so we'll also have an extra member to help us get things done. Our Gamespy rep, EvilHomer is now aware we want to prepare for the MMO and change the design of our front page ect. We'll also have some opportunities to put other ideas in place and the result of the transformation will at least be partially based on our community's ideas.

On a sidenote: Skyra sent a PM to EvilHomer right after we redirected to PlanetCyril, telling him about the prank, and he still hadn't read the PM by the time we changed it back. Well last night, about 3 hours later, EvilHomer appeared in the "Users Online" list and about 2 minutes later there were like 4 other members of IGN staff. I thought that was pretty funny, he probably about shit his pants... grin

That's not what I was saying. Gehenna indeed states that Caine wasn't in LA which is why it should be in the FAQ with the exact citation. It does say though that Caine did talk to some people which may make all the other people happy who think there was a connection to Caine in Bloodlines through the Cabbie. Regardless of what anyone believes, these facts should be presented here somewhere, either in a FAQ or a stickied thread.

Indeed. All it took to get the page updated was for someone else to do the work and hand you the source code.

Suggestion: Give Wesp access to the Front Page and let him use it as a running update feed for his Compilation.

Suggestion Mk II: Tell Javokis to announce the Wodal Mod on the Front Page.

Suggestion Mk III: 'Hire' someone to help you that actually has the time to help. For example; NOT someone who already moderates a site with exponentially more traffic than this one.
