Post by: [archive] MacBeth0 on March 02, 2005, 11:32:00 pm
that show that was on around 96,didnt know they had one,I was lookin threw some moives and spoted this,I couldnt help myself and had to have a look thinkin it had something to do with the game,I was surprised when I heard the word gangrel and brujah.
I wouldnt say it was the greatest thing I have seen, but I enjoyed it a good deal.
but some things bugged me,when did brujah and gangrel have a long hate for eachother?when did brujah wear nice suits and hung around eachother?and vampires could walk in daylight when they just had a little snack?
oh yeah not to mention all the vampires seemed to have animalism?

anyways I want ta know what ya guys think of the series.

Well, the fact that it didn't last should give you some idea. happy

It was entertaining, and done in a way that they hoped would appeal to people who weren't already playing Vampire: The Masquerade.  So they made a number of changes to try and increase its interest and appeal.  Think of it as "Vampire Lite."

K:TE had great promise, good actors, and so much potential.  Unfortunately Aaron Spelling was in charge, so...well, enough said.  tongue

He was the only person with the ability to get it on TV.  The fact that it didn't do well can't be solely attributed to him.

Also the guy that played the prince died in a motorcycle accident and that is the main reason why the show didn't last past 5 episodes.

I think it lasted a few episodes more than that and was cancelled before he died.  Actually, I had no idea that he died but do recall hearing it was cancelled.

Yeah, he died after the show had already been cancelled by Fox.  Though there was a rumor that the Sci-Fi Channel was considering picking it up, which they may have decided against after he died.

I read somewhere that  white wolf was going to create or be part of a new tv series based on Vampire the masqurade and be more true to the rpg then To Kindred the Embraced was...Anyone heard anything about that???

 Or just some untrue rumors?

Kindred the Embraced wasn't to bad (I have the boxed set), although I was rather annoyed at the way they gave all the vampires similar powers, and that the Nosferatu didn't really seem ugly enough to get the reactions he did.

I never said kindred was bad has the boxed version myself I just wondered if it is true the info i heard around this forum that White wolf will be part of series based on Vampire the masqurade and feature the clans more like they are in the rpg???

Or was it just a stupid rumor?

Since they have offcially completely dropped all Masquerade support, it's most likely a rumor. They might do a Requiem show though.

I have the boxed set as well...
I actually like the series as well. :-)
All the clans having pretty much the same powers did annoy me a little, and like you said, the Nosferatu are fairly average looking.  I watched the series with some friends a few weeks ago, and we started laughing about what makes a Nosferatu different from a regular vampire - basically if you're bald or shave your head, you're in.  Add slightly larger than usual earlobes and you can be the primogen.  (Then you can live in the Princes basement).
 Uh, what was I saying?
Oh yeah, I liked the series!

Kindred: the Embraced was WRETCHED!!!  I was watching it with a few friends, and about 10 minutes into it we all decided that the only way we could finish it was to bust out the cheap vodka and dorritos.

 Harsh, very harsh.

Well, it's bacisly a Vampire soap opera (speaking of which, try Dark Shadows, it's allegedly another Vampire soap opera), so if you don't like soap operas, you most likely won't like it either...Well, that and the fact that it butchers VTM quite a bit.

Buffy and Kindred came out at about same time. Buffy was aimed at teens, Kindred at a more mature (and female) audience. Buffy worked, Kindred didn't.

I liked Julian Luna and of course Lily the Toreador Primogen, marvelous looking lady. There were a few very nice plots, like the final episode one in which Luna remembers "the old days" as an enforcer. Then the plot with Eddie Fiori's rise and fall. And of course the Camarilla plots and plays, behind the curtains deals and very nice put together and acted, Council of Primogen scenes. That was good stuff. As an overall, the series is shit-lame, but it has its really neat high-points. Definitely worth a watch.

It's really not worth watching.  You can tell the writers weren't exactly hardcore White Wolf fans within the first 2 minutes...one of the characters says "You Gangrels are all the same" when any experienced player will tell you that the term "Gangrel" is both singular and plural.  That's just the start.  They lost me when the vampires could walk around in sunlight, and the topic of "eternal damnation" was more of a footnote.  It felt like a story told by a newbie ST who is still enamoured with the whole "Ooh, vampires are sexy!" bit.

Interview with the Vampire still stands as the best vampire film when it comes to theme (damnation, survival, adaptation) and mood (wonder, mystery, despair).  Queen of the Damned can almost be called "utter crap" but the Marius character makes it bearable.

Ho there. Let's not sell it as a "potentially good" effort. It really is idiotic and lame as hell, and the only thing it has in common with V:tM is the general theme and a colon in the title. Even the terminology was messed up:

Bah, the local translation had them named "Gangers". How bout *THAT* shit? Besides, the majority here on this board still say "Toreadors, Tremeres, Ventrues" et al...

Urk. You loose me here. How is K:tE mature? And female-oriented? Just because it's a soap? Now, admittedly I didn't endure the entire 8 episodes, but what I've seen *is* pretty shallow and transparent.

Bottom line is that people new to Vampire should avoid the series, since it's a terrible place to start, but (as it's been mentioned) Vampire players can laugh their asses off at the general cluelessness or, say, the so-called Nosferatu for instance.

ps. It does amuse me to no end how people who pounded on Bloodlines for messing up the disciplines will defend this thing though.

believe it or not, for what it was it wasnt that bad.

Sure they ruined it greatly with the sun walkers and the story lines didnt get put out well at all, but considering each ep was 30 mins it was not that bad.

As it was put though, it is like a newbie storyteller wrote the thing, but then again they didnt get the chance to mature like all storytellers needed to.

I first saw the series well after it was over when I came across the title at Best Buy. I saw it was produced by Arron Spelling so I knew what I was getting into before I watched it. When I popped it in the DVD player I was expecting Melrose Place with vampires and that's essentially what it was. I liked it , primarily because of Stacy Haiduk who was irresistible as Lillie Langtry. I could see how hardcore White Wolf P&P players wouldn't like it but I still say it's better than let's say, "Forever Knight".

However, I'm not against the Doritos and cheap vodka approach either
