Title: Chapter 2.0: The First Hand is Dealt
Post by: Friktion on September 01, 2011, 07:04:55 pm
This is a global post to all those in the theater.  Those not in the theater will have the opportunity to join the chronicle soon.  Please respond to events in here, not in PM unless you have questions.

Hamlet was amazing.  Or should I say, Hamlet is amazing?  Was that the last beautiful work of art that you will witness?  It's not really so bad, going out on one of the most famous plays in the history of mankind.  It's better than sitting at home plotting the next step.  Wake up!

Suddenly, you snap awake.  The stage is completely dark save for six spotlights.  One spotlight is shining brightly on center stage.  Five additional spotlights are shining dimly in an arc around the central spotlight.

Stand up!

You spring to your feet, scared.  You look around to see four others as confused and bewildered as you are.  Instinctively you look for the exits, but cannot see anything past the seating area through the shadows.  What you can see are that the shadows seem alive; swirling, bubbling, and... hissing.  You cannot bear to look at them for long, feeling a chill creep down to your very bones.

Your mind flirts back to an old saying about being careful when staring into the abyss.

Take your place!

This does not seem like a suggestion.

Victor looks around sheepishly as if he just fell asleep in class and the teacher noticed. He causally moves into the isle and thinks to himself looking at the ground "Follow the footlights....."

Victor takes another look for the exits and tries to slowly back up to where he believed the exit to be

"Jesus fucking christ," Ashford mumbles as he stands quickly, a tendril of shadow getting too close for comfort to him in his hiding place against the wall. He stumbles, instinctively moving forward towards the light. The shadows all around him make it difficult to see, as though he is attempting to find his way, disoriented, several feet below the surface of the ocean.

He moves towards the spotlights at a loping run, passing people as he goes, looking around for anyone he might recognize.

All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages.

As You Like It, Act 2 Scene 7

Benjamin's eyelids flutter open like the raising of some heavy stage curtain. Indeed, the hard-pressed wood flooring that his cheek was planted against feels uncannily like a stage. Like home. Groaning, he pushes himself to his knees and looks around.

This was his stage, but the theatre was dark, except for a few nearby lights. A spotlight beamed down at center, a short distance from where he collected himself. Squinting, he looks out into the audience seats, partially blinded by the stagelight. He swears he can make out shapes and shadows in the seats and the aisle. Kneeling there, images of the last few hours are a blur in his mind. Hamlet... He was up here on this stage. The performance - and the closing curtain. He told Cheryl to go ahead to the party with the rest of the players and that he would catch up...

Still unable to make out the world beyond the stage in anything more than dim shapes, Ben puts a hand above his eyes to shield from the light, focusing his senses and clearing his throat.

"Erm - the show's over folks!" he shouts cautiously as he gets to his feet. "Thanks for coming out, but you'll have to clear the deck so we can clean this ship up for her next premiere."

Activating Heightened Senses to try and see beyond the stage into the shadows and make out anything or anyone that might be there.

Ashford stumbles towards the stage, making out dim shapes as he goes, and hears a familiar voice calling out; the lights are blinding, Ashford can only make out a dim shape on the stage.

"Ben!? Ben, is that you?? What the fuck are you playing at??" Ashford stops for a moment and points to the man on the stage. "I swear to god, if you're behind all this, you J.M. Barrie wannabe motherfucker, I'm kicking your ass- I don't care if this IS your place."

Ashford dives up onto the stage at a full run, ignoring the stairs, and rolling low, coming up in a crouch. He sees Ben up on the stage, and rushes into one of the spotlights, instinctively knowing that it is a safe haven from the encroaching shadows. He sits, waiting for reality to reassert itself, and narrows his eyes at Ben.

"Ben... What the hell."

The man running up to the stage, spouting obscenities, is wearing a dark brown jacket, and looks very much like this man: (Minus the Spam & Cheerios.)

Almost immediately after concentrating on the audience, Benjamin hears a voice shouting up at him. A particularly unhappy one, at that - but there is something familiar about the tone he was taking...

J.M. Barrie...

"...Ash?" he mutters questioningly to the darkness, incredulous. As the middle-aged man hoists himself up onto the stage and into the light, Benjamin puts down the hand shielding his eyes and faces his approaching guest.

"Ash you old dog, is that you?" Benjamin asks, appraising the man from head to toe. "Love the suit, boyo" he chuckles, grinning. "Glad you could make the show - what did you think?" Benjamin stands beaming, suddenly forgetful of the underlying tension in the theatre.

"Barrie could learn a thing or two, yeah?"

Ashford drops the illusion from his voice, but not his face. It changes from a squeaky, middle aged man's to a deep rumbly, raspy voice- one that carries with it the timbre of murder, and oddly, well suited to the stage upon which he now stands.

"Fuckin' great, until all hell broke loose. I'd suspected it was your big, fuckin' finale." He motions to the crowd and the shadows encroaching on them. "Or wasn't this in the script?"

Ian Mcshane's voice is EXACTLY what I'm going for with Ashford's voice. For those of you who aren't deadwood fans:

Benjamin shakes his head doubtfully, following Ashford's motion to the audience seats. The air of confusion and veiled menace returns to him on the stage, despite being in his element and joined by an old friend. Something was out of place. This whole night had been off, including the performance itself. Even that got started fifteen minutes late. What was the world coming to?

"This does seem a bit... off, doesn't it?" Benjamin nods downstage to the house seats, where a trick of the lighting made the shadows seem to pool and twist. Odd...

"I have no idea. I just woke up here... I was waiting for something - stupid really, but I thought it might be here. Did I pass out?" Benjamin squints again at the darkness beyond the stage. "Say Ash, did you come alone? This insufferable lighting... I can't see a gods-damned thing out there!"

"You sure you didn't run Macbeth by accident?"
Ashford grins, the usual undertone of wickedness instead coming off as rather insipid, when worn on the face of this random pedestrian.

"What's the saying? Uh... Angels and ministers of grace, defend us; something like that?"

Ashford looks at Ben, concern starting to genuinely show on his features.

"So you didn't do ANY of this?" Ashford looks out over the crowd and sees the other three approaching. He squints but can't make out any real features, bathed in light as he is.

"There are others, yeah. But I came alone."
Five spotlights, five people...

"Just what the fuck is going on here?"

Benjamin winces at the mention of Macbeth, sucking air through his teeth in a soft hiss. A bad omen, and the bastard knew it. Muddling his way through the cleansing ritual didn't help matters either. He looks at Ashford, stern and uncharacteristically serious.

"You know, in Irleand they'd make you spin 'round three times and spit, to boot. Don't tempt spirits, Ash. It's a road they're all too willing to walk down, but nary a happy one."

Benjamin clears his throat with a cough, aware of the weight he's added to the conversation and attempting to lighten it.

"Lucky you have me then, yeah?" His faces relaxes into a sympathetic frown. "Right then..."

He turns from Ashford and calls out to the house. "Hullo? You all in the audience there! Who are you?"

Victor freezes in place as if a dog caught doing wrong and smiles slyly.

He slowly approaches and with a bounce in his step takes a place in the lime light.

"The name is Victor gentlemen, how are you this lovely evening?, amazing rendition of Hamlet." He says this almost through his teeth, gritting and choking back the bile and almost sugar coating the pleasantries, with an undertone of kill them with kindness.

Victor stands tall in his light  with his hands in plain sight avoiding any threatening positions.

Ashford's eyes slide from Victor to Ben, then back to Victor.

"Patron of the arts, are you? Or did you get the same 'come follow the footlights at the witching hour for tea and fucking crumpets; then get eaten by shadow monsters' bullshit that I did? Anyone see assigned 'gullible bastard' seating on the way in? I must've missed it; but I think we all should've been sitting there. Stupid fucking cocksucker I am, I thought Ben here just wanted me to see his show. He's into voodoo and all that creepy shit."

Ashford motions to Ben in an almost dismissive motion, then turns back to Victor.

"Name's Ashford, by the way."

Victor begins to dig his finger tips into his palms and releases.

"I guess from your emotional, I have been held too much or too little outburst, you also were dragged here more or less against your will and mentally raped on the way in. I personally like my mental raping with a little foreplay or at least see the face of my penetrator and violator first."

Victor looks over to Ben. "I assume you are Ben, how are you sir?" Smiles brightly but forced.

"Oh and Ashy, I am a "patron" of the arts when my obligations allow me to to enjoy it. I figured while im being violated I would take in a classic theater"

Ashford laughs out loud in a gravelley, rather disconcerting way, cutting off any response Ben might have. He grins, looking over at his playwright friend.

"Shit, Ben, I like this kid! Friend of yours? I sure fuckin' hope so. He's got some fuckin balls calling me 'ashy' too. No qualms about picking a fight with someone, even with no knowledge about whether I can turn 'em fuckin inside out and the like, or even what my real face looks like- apparently no fear of gettin' 'ashied' himself; I can respect that. Really into being raped in your theatre too. You two, uh, 'know' each other in the biblical sense, I take it?"

Ashford smiles a predator's smile and gestures between the two as he says this. He holds his hands out to both of them, inviting the question from either side, the mirth on his face completely genuine.

Victor just keeps smiling as if not phased nor shaken through the violent colorful banter.
"No sir, I do not think I met your friend yet, I am more of a home body, so to be dragged out into night has put me off and in a bad mood"

Victor looks around the theater "Ben, your theater, as in owner, or just a thespian of this hall? Regardless, would be a shame for either of us to mar and maim ourselves and this theater, I only say this because I fully appreciate that we do not know what we are capable of or how far we will take it, and best right now to not test our limits."

Victor continues to look around and take in the sights but tries not to lose track of where Ashford is.

Ashford chuckles that same, unsettling, gravelly chuckle. He steps out of the spotlight when the man starts looking around the theatre, and when he looks away, ashford simply isnt there anymore.
His chuckle persists longer than his visage does, as it reverberates around the darkened theatre.

From his seat at the back rows He looks at the empty seats where the audience were moments ago, he spots the three others, are these kindred.

He listens to their conversation that can be heard easily with the wonderful acoustics in the hall as he looks at the "footlights" or spotlights , trying to make sense of that wicked game as he move towards the others.

In her corner of the stage a young woman stands twirling a parasol above her as she observes her -- companions as they boister and banter forth. As the auditorium of shadows swirls around them, being kept at bay by the above high spotlight she elates, and crouches down reaching out to caress the darkness, without fear or anxiety as one would caress a puppy or kitten.

"Such sweet little things you are. Did the big bad men scare you? Its okay, I don't bite." She coos sweetly to one of them gently, keeping her attention to the other stars of the show as well while occupying herself with the flora and fauna of the stage.

Standing back up she calls out across the stage to the other premieres; " Is this a production of one of your minds or is there a greater will at work than any of you may fathom? It seems we are all slated to be the pawns in another of le monsieur l'aîné games. Had I known this night would have made me a star, I would have dressed a bit more appropriately, as my own attire laisser à désirer."

Benjamin nods to the man on stage with them as Ashford pulls his ever-amusing trick. He speaks cordially but with a stern edge.

"Aye, Benjamin Lambert, and 'tis indeed my theatre. My balconies, my seats, my red velvet curtain," he glances to the man's feet, "and my stage." He lets the finality of that statement hang in the air for a moment.

"But seven hells if I have any clue what's going on here. Victor was it, lad? It appears you have a passing knowledge of our...kind." Somewhere in the house seats Benjamin hears a woman's voice calling to them. He vaguely makes out a dim outline in her direction.

"The meeting for Confused Pawns Anonymous is currently being held up here, my dear," he calls back to the darkness pleasantly. "Why don't you join us? Our dress code is very lenient, I assure you."

Smirking to himself, Benjamin turns back to Victor. "What do you make of our current predicament?"

Benjamin acknowledges Victor with a silent nod and follows his gaze to the woman.

"Yes, right then. Do you need a hand up, m'dear? The stairs are just 'round the side here," he waves to his left, somewhere out of reach of the lights.

He takes two steps over to stage left, looking into the abyss of seats. The audience of shadows seemed to be staring back at him as well. Benjamin feels a chill run down his back.

"Er - anyone else in here with us," he calls blindly, "make your way to the stage and we'll get this business sorted."

Spinning around, he scans the empty stage with a brief lingering gaze.

"You a'right, Ash? Still with us?" he asks the empty floorboards. Too often lately it felt like he was talking to people who weren't actually there. For most people that was never a good sign, but Benjamin couldn't escape feeling like it was especially bad news for him. Particularly when they answered.

"Right then, right..." he looks down at the stage in thought. "We're all here for a reason, we can assume, yeah?" Benjamin raises his head level with the others. "What brought each of you here tonight, to my theatre?"

"Truly now," he adds, sceptically, allowing (against reason) that they probably didn't come just to see the Bard's masterpiece.

Ashford is suddenly standing there once again, in the far spotlight, grinning a rather wicked grin that doesn't match the face that he wears.

"Still with you, pal. Wouldn't miss it for the fuckin' world... Air's just a bit stuffy over there."
Ashford puts his hands in his pocket as though only noticing his pants for the first time. He looks down at them appraisingly and shakes his head.

"Why am I here? well, I was doing some research when something busted into my haven and decided to play bongos on the inside of my fuckin' brain. I swear to god, the cocksucker hurt like crazy when the message stopped. I figured it was your light-in-the-loafers way of rebelling against cell phone communication; to restrict yourself to a more 'Victorian' mode of contact- which is to say, creepy fucking ghost messengers, since you knew you couldn't find the fuckin' place on your own. You must admit, Ben, you've pulled some weird shit in your day. Can't blame me for thinking it's you."

Ashford looks down and appears to be eyeing up the edge of the circle of light in which he stands.
"Anyway, it told me I'd been "Activated" or some shit like that... and to follow the footlights to the witching hour or something equally noir-fucking-neo-pagan. Figured you were in trouble and the ghost just had some kind of retarded desire to be poetic from beyond the grave and hurt my fuckin' brain some more. So here I am."

Pausing, Ashford narrows his eyes and points accusingly, as though just realizing something that Ben had said.
"What do you mean, we'll get this business sorted. Did you know about this before we did?"

She quietly and slowly walks her way up the side stair unabashed by the lack of lighting and emerges from the darkness at the edge of the expanse of the stage.

"It seems we have all had a similar.. incident. None of us being the culprit shall we surmise? Then who then, holds the base of the board we dance upon. If this is indeed your domain, who would wish to gather us here? Friend or foe?"

"Friend or foe, friend or foe, off the deep end here we go!"  A shrill, maniacal voice booms from all around the stage.  It is then followed by cackling laughter as though someone just told a great inside joke.

Out of the central spotlight, a medium sized girlish figure appears; you recognize the figure as the ticket counter girl.  She is sporting  a wicked "cat caught the canary" grin stretching from ear to ear.

Suddenly her form shimmers and the splitting image of Benjamin appears, "Anyone else in here with us?" he mocks in Benjamin voice.  Taking a few steps towards Benjamin, the form shimmers again and the splitting image of Ashford appears.  "Still with you pal." He hisses in a gravely voice.  Taking a few steps towards Victor the form shimmers again, "If this is indeed your domain..." a girl in a black and pink dress begins before making her way towards the original Asian girl, "... dragged here against your will." The image of Victor concludes.

"Friend or foe, friend or foe, we'll add two more and then we'll go!" the now unfamiliar images gleefully squeals.

(For those who could see or with Auspex, as a few have HS on at the moment.)  Sitting on what seems to be long oily black tendrils, they form into a chair or perhaps a throne, their organic but alien composition not quite right, but blending in with the area around her. The four arms, sustain her as she sits, less than primp and proper; a leg crossed, and raise her up above the stage on the darkened side three to four feet.

"This seems quite uncouth of you to let such a being into your domain sir. Do you need assistance in rectifying this mistake or is it a wanted distraction? I fear I may break a nail, so perhaps your friend would be better suited for this type of action if you warrant it sir."

Benjamin spins on a dime from one target of outrage to the next.

"Now is not the time, m'dear. I'll abide you in my domain even despite your garrish fashion - which by all rights is an affront t'the very class of this hall. We all seem to have gotten ourselves in a right fecking mess with this header." He nods his head to the imposter on stage and back to the woman, sitting in her impromptu throne. The nerve.

"So yeah - we're in it together. But this," he says thrusting a finger at the shifting shadows in the audience seats - his voice shaking, "I will not tolerate. This is a hall of the arts, not a witch's den. Put this place back to rights at once - or you can show yourself to the door and sort this out on your own, lassy."

Benjamin stares her down with a mix of frustration and weariness. It's clear that he's not the type to get upset often, but his voice carries a certain home-turf authority to it.

Ashford pauses for a moment, before adding;

"And no- you're not allowed to make a fuckin' throne in someone else's haven. Would you want him to come into your house and start changing window dressings and shit? Show some fuckin' respect, if you can even define it."

Ashford looks to Ben and gives him a terse nod of support.

"Now, I believe the creepy fuckin shapeshifter with mind-rape powers had the floor."
He motions to the creepy shapeshifter with a resigned sigh.

Benjamin gives Ashford a weary, thankful nod. He was constantly surprised by the man's support. He may be rough around the edges, but he was genuine. Benjamin respected that. It counted for a hell of a lot more among these types.

Not giving the asian lady a second glance, Benjamin turns to the - what had Ash called him; a shapeshifter? - he turns to the shapeshifter, and clears his throat, rubbing his hands together slowly, tentatively.

"Ahem. I b'lieve you still owe us an explanation," he says trying to maintain a stern edge to his voice.

The creepy fucking shapeshifter with mind-rape powers gives Ashford a curt nod.

"Yes yes" he exclaims, quite pleased with himself, "these new players will do just fine. Just fine indeed!  Much better than the last cast!"

He makes a big theatrical presentation of crossing the stage with his hand flat against his forehead as if he's searching far and wide for something missing.  Finally he lets out another over-exaggerated squeal of delight as he points excitedly to something, or someone still in the seats.

"This performance cannot continue until all the cast has assembled!"  Suddenly the features turn dark and gloomy.  "At least the cast smart enough to find the play."

She glares at Ashford from her side of the darkness. "Sir you presu--" stopping mid-sentence to an almost indignant "harumph" is let out as well as muted "children" and something about the "gran-pere." She steps out from the edge of the darkened side of the room, to an area slightly more visible but not one that is far from where she was before. The "throne" subsides back into the area around it but you still have a feeling that the pieces that made it up are still out and around, despite the fact that you can not see them. As the unknown fiend creates his threatrical 'danse macbre' upon the stage, she collapses her parasol and uses it as a sort of cane to support herself in waiting for things to begin, with a faux yawn.

Ashford mumbles something as well- a few choice words about how totally fucking superfluous it is to have a parasol opened indoors, and then turns back to the shapeshifter.

"Wait... We're stuck just standing here until others show up? and no guarantee that they even will?"

The face of the businessman that Ashford is wearing furrows into an almost comical scowl as he eyes up the creature before him. His tone when speaking to someone he believes to be superior to him in power is clearly different, and much less peppered with obscenities.
"Look. I don't mean to show disrespect because it's obvious you're pretty damn powerful, whatever you are-- But givin' us some information on why we're here and what you want from us would go a long way towards getting our cooperation. After all, not many kindred react well to being held hostage, yknow?"

The red-head turns his head back towards Ashford, sullen expression on his face.  Humorlessly he replies, "and what makes you believe, sir, that I require your cooperation?"

Suddenly his serious mask cracks and he falls to the floor giggling.  "You should have seen the look on your face!"  The man then proceeds to literally roll on the floor laughing.  As suddenly as he began, he suddenly stops and jumps to his feet.

"Shall I give them their first task? Yes yes! But first..." he wags his finger like a boy playing fetch with his dog.  It's obvious he wants everyone to gather around closer.

Ashford sets his stance, locks his jaw, and crosses his arms. He looks to the others and indicates that they should stand their ground too.
Smug bastard says he doesn't require our cooperation, but we can show him that working with us would make things a lot easier.

"I dunno about the rest of the fantastic 5 here, but I know Ben and I don't have a lot of patience for these games. Especially not in his place. Especially not with you having violated my haven."

Adam crossed his arms as he leaned on the wall at the edge of the stage, grim, he remained silent as he listened to the others who have mostly ignored his presence in the darkness.

He did not mind it, their nervous outspoken fraternization answers no questions and simply boasts the fact that they were clueless as to what was going on, they were no threat at the moment.

Adam decided to play the cool quiet guy while watching that shape-shifting freak step in. The master of the power, though for a moment a chill went down his spine when he seen the ticket lady who's number he asked.
He couldn't help but glare silently at Ashford and Ben as they began to provoke the enigmatic persona that that was probably powerful enough to take on anyone in the room , Shut up you fools! he thought, almost willing himself to say that audibly.

"Ashford here has the right of it. I don't know what you're playing at mister, but I'm sure we all have places we'd rather be right now. Could you cut to the jib of it so we can figure out just what the hell is going on?"

Benjamin folds his arms in mimic of Ashford, though visibly less terse and intimidating. Not wanting to get any closer or look the git in the eyes for fear that the crazy might somehow spread to him, Benjamin tries instead to concentrate on the man's chest, his clothes...something nondescript that could almost be normal, or safe. While concentrating, he focuses on the man's latent energy in the air around him, hoping to read some sign of what the header intended for them.

"I'll bite.... I am in the mood for a good story or string pulling, please mr.antagonist, enlighten me and my new found colleagues, what is on your mind? I am sure if the person we are missing is present and just keeping their distance they are able to hear you."

Ashford mutters: "Figures- Wannabe Ventrue piece of shit. Let's not stand together or anything. Fuckin' dumber than a bag of hammers- and think you know better than the rest of us. Well let's get this shit over with. I've got things to do."

Ashford's voice morphs back into that of a university-educated businessman, and his inflection takes on a rather poor british stage accent. His presence commands the stage as he approaches the trickster, clearly growing impatient.

"FORSOOTH, captor, tell us why thou hast handed us a royal ass-fucking, and wherefore art thou finding it appropriate to play with us like marionettes? For indeed, they say, all the world's a stage- and all upon it, merely actors. And you, I suppose, would be the cocksucker who tells us how to dance." His voice begins to morph back into his true voice, the monster beneath the clearly false face that he still wears. "And may I say that even if it kills me, if you don't start playin' ball with us, I'm going to do my best to make your efforts difficult for the sake of bein' fuckin' difficult. I don't think you want to fuck with every one of my people currently in this town- and trust me, I'll spin it that way if I fuckin' have to- they'll all be out for blood. We're not playin' nice. We're not buddies, we're not your playthings, and I'm done pretending like I give a shit. By the second, we're all startin' to think less about how we can help you and more about how we can fuck up your program. So why not cut to the chase and tell us exactly what the fuck you want, hm?"

Victor drops his smile to a more depressed long face and turns back to the trickster.

Puck the Mindfuck lets out a howl of laughter at his new nickname.  He doubles over laughing and remains hunched, gripping his stomach, for several long minutes.  When he stands back up, his expression has changed.  The tears rolling down his cheeks are obvious, but more importantly you notice a scared, pleading look momentarily flash in his eyes.

"Threaten me?  You think you can threaten me?" he scoffs inbetween minor bursts of giggles, the humor returning back into his facial features.  "You're going to tell all your big bad friends that someone threatened you, made you cry like a scared girl in your own home, and you don't know his name or what he looks like?"  Puck the Mindfuck lets out another howl of uncontrollable laughter.  This time you can clearly see the look of fear in the man's eyes.

"You don't like getting your strings pulled? Do something about it."  He holds his chin out, taunting Ashford to punch him in the face.

Ashford needs a self-control roll to avoid frenzy from public humiliation.  Diff 7 (as being taunted is so much more demeaning for someone with the highest status in the room)

Then something in "puck's" eyes changes his mood- Ashford would never admit it, but it pulls on a secret heartstring, way down deep inside.

He's scared shitless of something...

Ashford crosses his arms and leans right back into the man's face, not responding to the taunt, his eyebrows arching up as he stares the man down hard.

"Nah, wait... I've seen you before somewhere. You've got one of those... Looks that someone doesn't forget. You rolled into town a few years back, couple years after I did- I remember you now. You'll have to forgive me- your name escapes me- You had the good sense to present yourself to the prince though, so that's good. With mocking calm disinterest Adam watches over  the happening from a detached distance as he listens and shifts as Ashford draws first blood on Victor, he stirs from his seeming indifference when he hears the mention of a Tzimisce in their midst.

Not content with leaning against the stage's wall quietly , He moves to stand upright, adjusting his suit as he glances at Victor before making his dramatic approach towards the gathering.

"Ashford was it? I think we better hold off on doing anything drastic until we confirm that Victor is indeed Tzimisce, we wouldn't want to hurt him if he is innocent and all we have is the word of a stranger who raped our minds."
He stops a few paces away from Victor, bending his knees to kneel down to victor's eye level , his fingers cross thoughtfully forming a triangle shape and his eyebrows arch as he gaze with posed remorse-fullness at the injured man.

Sayuri shakes her head for a moment, then begins twirling a finger around, mostly out of boredom but trying to show annoyance that matters at hand are not progressing with time. The shadows behind her seem to calm and the edge of the stage behind Mr. Tzimisce begins to darken slightly as she wills half her lovelies to his side the area, allowing quick access if the need arises.

They sit and wait in the darkness like coiled serpents of pure night.

For reference she scored 4 success on her initial roll, and has four seperate "tenticles", two which have moved towards the "tzimisce" and two which are situated near her. Each has the following stats according to core; 4 health levels, 3 STR and 3 DEX (based on her Obten level), and 2 Stamina for soaking (based on hers as noted in core.)

Ashford nods sternly.

"It's your show Ben. Er... Literally. I'll follow your lead." The illusion around him ripples for a moment and you briefly see a long black coat which conceals a sheath for a machete. Suddenly the dorky businessman ((With the spam!!)) Has returned.

Ashford moves to help the man up, snagging him under the arm and helping him up into a standing position smoothly, as though Victor weighed nothing. Everyone watching can't help but notice that he stays well away from Victor's hands as he does so.

"No hard feelings pal. Ben's right. We should all be focused on getting things sorted here before we start startin' shit amongst ourselves. Sorry about the nose too."
The apology seems at least mostly sincere, but you get the sense like Ashford is following tradition more than feeling genuinely contrite. Having helped the man up, he returns to Ben's spotlight and stands beside him, giving him a nod of support.

The red-headed Puck clasps his hands together in front of his heart.  "That was beautiful.  A tale of two kindred brothers, as they defy societal norms  and overcome the SHACKLES of an oppressive, overbearing government in order to find true love."

Puck whirls around and quick-draws his fingers, pointing the imaginary guns at Benjamin.  "Now that would be an awesome production!"  He cackles again, but this time it seems more forced than actual genuine laughter.  It is also short lived.

His form shimmers slightly and he shakes his head disappointingly as he looks at an invisible watch on his arm.  When he speaks again, all the humor has left his voice.  "Seems like I'm losing my touch in my old age.  Right then, lets get down to business.  Adam, Sayuri, if I were you I would remember this face" he waves his hand over his own face as it shimmers slightly.

"You see, the Camarilla presence here is about to come to an explosive conclusion.  But it seems that some important people don't want you to be casualties in the upcoming war." Puck paces back and forth as if addressing the troops.  "Then again, some important people paid some other important people some important resources to take you out." He stops pacing and slowly drags a finger across his throat.

"So that leaves this important person in a bit of an unimportant predicament" Puck continues pacing.  "And being the important decision maker that I am, I have come up with a solution."

Puck pauses, clearly pleased with himself.  "Half of you will die."  He beams a smile.  "But I am generally a nice guy, so I'll let you choose which half."

"To this end, I have divided you into two groups.  The first group to discover and dispatch their would-be conspirators will be spared.  However we do need some ground rules.  So the only real rule is you're not allowed to directly physically harm the other group.  What you do to members of your group is up to you, but I'd imagine killing your teammate would not make things easier on you." He winks at Ashford.

"Now then Ashford, Benjamin, and Victor will be a team and Sayuri, Adam, and Kevin will be a team.  Unfortunately, Kevin couldn't make it to this production, so Adam and Sayuri can either try to hunt him down, or stay a man down.  I leave the choice to you."

Puck stops pacing and stand at mock attention.  "Any questions?" His form shimmers again, "better make it quick."

"Wait... What possible reason would I have to want to harm them? They've done nothing to me- and ben here, though he's full of surprises- well... Let's just say it'd take a lot for him to want to kill someone..."

Ashford turns to the others, his voice a little bit pleading.

"This is stupid. C'mon, we're not actually going to entertain this as a possibility, right guys? I know after that last display you probably think I'm the last fuckin' guy in the world to extend an olive branch of peace- but I don't like harming people who don't deserve it... And you two definitely don't deserve it."

Victor shoves his hands into his pants and wanders closer to his friendly cohorts, keeping outside of arms length reach of course and avoiding eye contact as like a loyal dog that has been beaten too much.

"I have a feeling I was left off the "Do not want to harm or kill" list of yours Ashford. Rightfully so as you now accept and believe me to be your sworn enemy. As soon as I step out of here, I believe you will kill me or simply have me tag along and be dispatched. Being the 3rd wheel and all."

Visibly tenses up for another blow.

"Enough!"

The parasol drops to the ground and the shadows around her seem to swarm to her very presence. She points at the "Puck," the very antagonizing presence that is harrasing this group.

"You will not order us around. We will not play your games. This is over. Nous en avons terminé ici."

From her dress, up her arm, and the surrounding area four oily tenticles swarm and attack the "Puck" seeking to constrict, penetrate, and destroy the being.

The following happens before Sayuri's attack:

"Some very important people," Benjamin scoffs, "Right. How dear of them, and here I thought I'd been running a theatre house all these years! Look around, fair gladiators, for all is not as it seems," he continues in mock surprise, gazing out wonderingly beyond the stage. "Through this mirage I see clearly now that it hath always been a Colosseum."

Benjamin chuckles, turning to his guests. "A fight to the death, is it?" he grins, playfully boxing the air in a stiff, clearly unpracticed one-two. "Right then! Who's first?" he says smiling, shifting his weight from one foot to the other in an exaggerated show, his fists raised improperly above his chest. A moment later laughter bursts from his pursed lips.

"What a right load of shite," he says, still chuckling. "Now I'm sure Puck here means business, the clear-headed suit that he is. But where's your insurance policy, boyo?" he asks, turning to Puck. "People don't listen to a voice who just waltzes into their life simple-as-he-please and starts telling them what to do."

"Ashford's right," he says turning back to the others. "We can't believe this elaborate fantasy just because some head-case wants to get his jollies off messing with us. You all felt how he treated us, getting us here. What ever happened to a simple phone call, yeah?"

"Bloody Christ!"

Benjamin dives to the stage floor away from the group as some horrible demon-squid flails its tentacles around. He knows that their kind are capable of all sorts of spectacle, but whatever level of hell this beast had been conjured from, it was surely the most unnerving thing he had ever witnessed. And he was used to dealing with a rather disturbing lot, at that.

As the tentacles lash out, the fear in Puck's eyes is unmistakable.  He begins to crouch as if he's trying to hit the deck, but at the last second, he stands up straight.  Just before the first tentacle strikes, he begins to laugh uncontrollably, louder and louder until you feel as if your skull is going to burst.

Strangely, even as the tentacles ravage his body, he never moves, never flinches.  He simply stands there trembling slightly as his eyes scream the message of fear and pain.  Yet, he continues to laugh.

Even as his blood covered, lifeless body falls onto the ground, the laughter continues.  It isn't until a few minutes go by, that each of you realizes that the laughter isn't coming from the  lifeless body of the counter girl on the floor.

Each of you is laughing uncontrollably.

If it's not clear.  After the tentacles killed Puck, the visage dropped and revealed to be the ticket counter girl.  Aydoo you need to roll conscious (diff 8, willpower/merits don't help) to justify murdering an unarmed person in cold blood.  All five of you begin laughing uncontrollably during the murder and only realize this after Puck is dead.

Kneeling on the ground, Benjamin holds his side as he chuckles out the last of the unbidden madness. As his rational mind re-exterts itself, the scene comes into focus and horror fills his heart. Climbing to his feet, he rushes over to the girl on the floor, only to drop down beside her.

"Daphne! No... no..." he grabs the unconscious girl by the shoulder rolls her over, brushing sticky and bloodstained hair out of her face. Her eyes were rolled up into her head and her mouth hung open. Not feeling a pulse when he lifts her chin, Benjamin pounds the floor beside where he kneels.

"Damn it!" he hisses through his teeth, his jaw clenched and red tears rolling down his cheek. He closes her eyes and leans in close to kiss her cheek and whisper something in her ear.

If anyone has Heightened Senses active they might hear a coarse whisper, shaky with grief: "Bless you lass. May you find your way to the great shepherd's field. Sleep now, child."

Benjamin stands abruptly, and slowly turns around to face Sayuri, his fists clenched by his side and shaking.

"You -" His face is a well of grief, contorted and disheveled. "She was just a girl. Nineteen, working extra shifts to pay for college and her mother's chemotherapy medicine. You killed her." His voice cracks as he emphasizes that fatal word.

"Does none of our kind bother in person ever?"

She sighs the tenticles retreating covered in blood and coddling her like pets that have preformed their services to their master well, bring back small amounts of the woman's blood back to her.

Ashford quickly turns to the Asian girl. "That might snap him out of it, or it didn't do anything but buy us some time." Ashford winces as the man hits the seats, obviously pained that he was forced to do such a thing to his friend.

He turns to the girl, anger in his eyes that appears to be more clearly directed at himself than at her.
"There. I'm keeping him restrained so you don't have to. Don't lay a finger on him. We clear?"

Ash also motions to the shadows, as if to say don't take me literally, I meant the shadows too.

After a moment, his face softens into one that almost appears to be sympathetic.
"By the way... Don't mind him. He's unusually connected to his staff. I was only a few seconds away from attacking 'Puck' myself, and then the blood would've been on my hands. I guess what I'm trying to say is... Don't beat yourself up too much over it. Mistakes happen, yknow? And you were just looking out for all of us."

Though Ashford is rough and uncouth, there is a very honourable side and a convoluted sort of kindness that can't help but shine through in moments like this.

"Let's just make the call now, alright? We're not going to do what that asshole says. I'm not going to lay a finger on any of you guys. Not a chance. I'll fuck up a guy who deserves it... But no- you guys are alright."

O, what a rogue and peasant slave am I!
Is it not monstrous that this player here,
But in a fiction, in a dream of passion,
Could force his soul so to his own conceit
That from her working all the visage wann'd,
Tears in his eyes, distraction in his aspect,
A broken voice, an' his whole function suiting
With forms to his conceit? And all for nothing,
For Hecuba!
What's Hecuba to him, or he to Hecuba,
That he should weep for her? What would he do
Had he the motive and the cue for passion
That I have? He would drown the stage with tears,
And cleave the general ear with horrid speech,
Make mad the guilty, and appall the free,
Confound the ignorant, and amaze indeed
The very faculties of eyes and ears.

Hamlet,  Act 2 Scene 2

When he first met Daphne at the interview, Benjamin knew he was going to hire her. Shy, reserved, but with a fierce determination in her and more sorrow on her shoulders than one of her years should know. She would sing to herself in her ticket booth when she thought no one was listening, once everyone had been seated. But Benjamin had stumbled upon that ephemeral voice more than once, most often when he was held behind by the inane politics of his fellow damned. She was always quick with a smile though, teasing him for being late to his own show.

Under his own roof, Benajmin let her die. All of that life, all of her dreams and determination...gone. It was his fault, much as the woman's, really. He had been able to see through Ashford's illusions in the past, if he focused - why couldn't he see through this madman's?

Benjamin remains flat on the carpeted floor between the rows of seats, unmoving.

Sayuri keeps her eyes on Victor for awhile, you may feel the area is almost suffocating, perhaps if it weren't for the others your literal ass would be forfeit to something quite unholy and dark. Once convinced he isn't going to out right attack, she and two of her pets move to an area where she is comfortable and she sits, using one as a sort of swing made of night, though regardless you (Victor) should still feel as though you are watched.

He stands a few feet from where Ben is laying and looks over the fine mess. "Come now Ben, I may not understand your loss but we cannot take this laying down.  "Look well into thyself; there is a source of strength which will always spring up if thou wilt always look there". We will root out the would be master of this and have them pay for the loss and torture we are being put through."

The floor is hard despite the new carpeting Benjamin had installed last year. How many people shuffled down these rows every week into their seats? How many standing ovations weighed down on this floor and lifted his heart up on the stage? This was his castle, the staff and players his battalion. He had led them to so many victories, despite the challenges.

Why couldn't it stay that way?

Pushing the broken seat off from on top of him, Benjamin rolls over and stumbles to his feet, bracing himself against a nearby - intact - seat. He would have to get Cheryl to call the installation company. Cheryl...

Benjamin trudges forward coldly, ignoring Victor in the aisle. He takes a few steps forward, towards the stage and stops, facing the asian woman in her ridiculous dress.

"Get off my stage you stuck up, arrogant, insipid little premadonna bitch," he calls up at her, raising his voice but not screaming. "NOW." His voice rolls off the walls of the theater like brooding thunder.

"You are not welcome here - so I suggest getting the fuck out. And you'd better keep running, little miss I-have-a-stick-up-my-ass, because the Prince is going to hear about how you murdered one of my flock under the roof of my domain."

He raises an arm and points to the side exit.

"GO."

Very fake laughter which leads to another frown.

"As you wish mon homme. You should thank your friend first." She points at Ashford. "Otherwise you may seem d'être un enfant impoli."

She turns and walks to the edge of the stage, her shadows creating steps where there were none, and she heads up the row to front of the auditorium.

'This is strange', Adam thought, after recomposing himself from the burst of uncontrollable laughter.
He quietly descended from the far side of the stage and approached to examine Puck's body. Giving an almost scolding glance, ' That Sayuri character, could she really kill someone so powerful? or was this a proxy?' he scowled as he became more focused and curious as his mind ponder Puck's last words about conspiracy and the fall of the Camarilla.

'Why me?' the question was also floating around inside there somewhere as Adam knelt by the corpse of who turned out to be the ticket girl, he checks her skin and wounds to be sure.

"Sayuri's hitting the road, lad. You're welcome to stay and..." he blinks slowly, swallowing, "help with her. With Daphne, I mean. That was her name, you know."

Benjamin takes Daphne's arms and places them folded across her chest and wipes the blood away from her face with a handkerchief. She almost looks peaceful like that, he thinks, his face twisted in quiet grief.

"Still: much as I hate to say it- He did ask you to leave and it's his right to ask it of you by the traditions, any time, for any reason. Unless he changes his mind, you gotta leave."

As the girl walks, quite literally, off the stage several changes occur simultaneously in the atmosphere.  The swirling darkness around the stage fades until it is a see-through wisp of its former self and the house lights suddenly turn on.

The tentacles vanish as a result, their original source of darkness now dissipation.

The scene will draw to a close somewhere between two to three days  of no new responses.  Your experience will be decided based on  roleplaying and development, not by how many miles you walk so don't think ending the scene quicker will provide faster bonuses.  A particularly amazing verbal exchange between characters is worth just as much as running around and pimp slapping people.

He turns away quickly and rubs his face and scoffs. Thinking to himself, such monsters shouldn't know this feeling. The damned canites pining over her

Victor speaks with a shakey voice "besides my options, I am not an expert at cleaning up from invisable wars. I do not mean to be cold. Tell me what I may do to help or let's move on. You must have friends or cleaners for this kind of accident."

Ashford shoots a sidelong glance at Ben, then looks back to Victor.

"Did you talk like this back in your mortal days? Or was it all 'Forsooth, me hither yon thou- BURGERS at my place tomorrow! Bringeth your own beer or there shall be bad blood between us!- Verily, Bee Why, Oh bee!"

Ashford prances as he says so, but his question seems genuine.

Victor shrugs.

Four seemingly random strangers stand around the remains of a once-lively young woman.  The motionless body entwining them into a plot that is bigger than their primary, petty judgments of one another.  Despite their differences, the same question burns in each of their minds: Who is the puppet master?

Each raises a suspicion to the other, unknowing of why they were selected or for what purpose.  Each quietly plotting his next move.  Each is fueled by a different emotion; where one feels anger, another feels fear.  Where one senses intrigue, another senses opportunity.

And so the troupe must discover what it is they share.  For if their only commonality is their eternal fate...

...

...

Well one doesn't need to remind Daphne of the consequences.
