Chapter 2.0: The First Hand is Dealt
« on: September 01, 2011, 07:04:55 PM »
Spoiler for Hiden:
This is a global post to all those in the theater.  Those not in the theater will have the opportunity to join the chronicle soon.  Please respond to events in here, not in PM unless you have questions.

Hamlet was amazing.  Or should I say, Hamlet is amazing?  Was that the last beautiful work of art that you will witness?  It's not really so bad, going out on one of the most famous plays in the history of mankind.  It's better than sitting at home plotting the next step.  Wake up!

Suddenly, you snap awake.  The stage is completely dark save for six spotlights.  One spotlight is shining brightly on center stage.  Five additional spotlights are shining dimly in an arc around the central spotlight.

Stand up!

You spring to your feet, scared.  You look around to see four others as confused and bewildered as you are.  Instinctively you look for the exits, but cannot see anything past the seating area through the shadows.  What you can see are that the shadows seem alive; swirling, bubbling, and... hissing.  You cannot bear to look at them for long, feeling a chill creep down to your very bones.

Your mind flirts back to an old saying about being careful when staring into the abyss.

Take your place!

This does not seem like a suggestion.

Victor looks around sheepishly as if he just fell asleep in class and the teacher noticed. He causally moves into the isle and thinks to himself looking at the ground "Follow the footlights....."

Victor takes another look for the exits and tries to slowly back up to where he believed the exit to be

"Jesus fucking christ," Ashford mumbles as he stands quickly, a tendril of shadow getting too close for comfort to him in his hiding place against the wall. He stumbles, instinctively moving forward towards the light. The shadows all around him make it difficult to see, as though he is attempting to find his way, disoriented, several feet below the surface of the ocean.

He moves towards the spotlights at a loping run, passing people as he goes, looking around for anyone he might recognize.

All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages.

As You Like It, Act 2 Scene 7

Benjamin's eyelids flutter open like the raising of some heavy stage curtain. Indeed, the hard-pressed wood flooring that his cheek was planted against feels uncannily like a stage. Like home. Groaning, he pushes himself to his knees and looks around.

This was his stage, but the theatre was dark, except for a few nearby lights. A spotlight beamed down at center, a short distance from where he collected himself. Squinting, he looks out into the audience seats, partially blinded by the stagelight. He swears he can make out shapes and shadows in the seats and the aisle. Kneeling there, images of the last few hours are a blur in his mind. Hamlet... He was up here on this stage. The performance - and the closing curtain. He told Cheryl to go ahead to the party with the rest of the players and that he would catch up...

Still unable to make out the world beyond the stage in anything more than dim shapes, Ben puts a hand above his eyes to shield from the light, focusing his senses and clearing his throat.

"Erm - the show's over folks!" he shouts cautiously as he gets to his feet. "Thanks for coming out, but you'll have to clear the deck so we can clean this ship up for her next premiere."

Spoiler for Hiden:
Activating Heightened Senses to try and see beyond the stage into the shadows and make out anything or anyone that might be there.

Ashford stumbles towards the stage, making out dim shapes as he goes, and hears a familiar voice calling out; the lights are blinding, Ashford can only make out a dim shape on the stage.

"Ben!? Ben, is that you?? What the fuck are you playing at??" Ashford stops for a moment and points to the man on the stage. "I swear to god, if you're behind all this, you J.M. Barrie wannabe motherfucker, I'm kicking your ass- I don't care if this IS your place."

Ashford dives up onto the stage at a full run, ignoring the stairs, and rolling low, coming up in a crouch. He sees Ben up on the stage, and rushes into one of the spotlights, instinctively knowing that it is a safe haven from the encroaching shadows. He sits, waiting for reality to reassert itself, and narrows his eyes at Ben.

"Ben... What the hell."

Spoiler for Hiden:
The man running up to the stage, spouting obscenities, is wearing a dark brown jacket, and looks very much like this man: (Minus the Spam & Cheerios.)

Almost immediately after concentrating on the audience, Benjamin hears a voice shouting up at him. A particularly unhappy one, at that - but there is something familiar about the tone he was taking...

J.M. Barrie...

"...Ash?" he mutters questioningly to the darkness, incredulous. As the middle-aged man hoists himself up onto the stage and into the light, Benjamin puts down the hand shielding his eyes and faces his approaching guest.

"Ash you old dog, is that you?" Benjamin asks, appraising the man from head to toe. "Love the suit, boyo" he chuckles, grinning. "Glad you could make the show - what did you think?" Benjamin stands beaming, suddenly forgetful of the underlying tension in the theatre.

"Barrie could learn a thing or two, yeah?"

Ashford drops the illusion from his voice, but not his face. It changes from a squeaky, middle aged man's to a deep rumbly, raspy voice- one that carries with it the timbre of murder, and oddly, well suited to the stage upon which he now stands.

"Fuckin' great, until all hell broke loose. I'd suspected it was your big, fuckin' finale." He motions to the crowd and the shadows encroaching on them. "Or wasn't this in the script?"

Spoiler for Hiden:
Ian Mcshane's voice is EXACTLY what I'm going for with Ashford's voice. For those of you who aren't deadwood fans:

Benjamin shakes his head doubtfully, following Ashford's motion to the audience seats. The air of confusion and veiled menace returns to him on the stage, despite being in his element and joined by an old friend. Something was out of place. This whole night had been off, including the performance itself. Even that got started fifteen minutes late. What was the world coming to?

"This does seem a bit... off, doesn't it?" Benjamin nods downstage to the house seats, where a trick of the lighting made the shadows seem to pool and twist. Odd...

"I have no idea. I just woke up here... I was waiting for something - stupid really, but I thought it might be here. Did I pass out?" Benjamin squints again at the darkness beyond the stage. "Say Ash, did you come alone? This insufferable lighting... I can't see a gods-damned thing out there!"

"You sure you didn't run Macbeth by accident?"
Ashford grins, the usual undertone of wickedness instead coming off as rather insipid, when worn on the face of this random pedestrian.

"What's the saying? Uh... Angels and ministers of grace, defend us; something like that?"

Ashford looks at Ben, concern starting to genuinely show on his features.

"So you didn't do ANY of this?" Ashford looks out over the crowd and sees the other three approaching. He squints but can't make out any real features, bathed in light as he is.

"There are others, yeah. But I came alone."
Five spotlights, five people...

"Just what the fuck is going on here?"

Benjamin winces at the mention of Macbeth, sucking air through his teeth in a soft hiss. A bad omen, and the bastard knew it. Muddling his way through the cleansing ritual didn't help matters either. He looks at Ashford, stern and uncharacteristically serious.

"You know, in Irleand they'd make you spin 'round three times and spit, to boot. Don't tempt spirits, Ash. It's a road they're all too willing to walk down, but nary a happy one."

Benjamin clears his throat with a cough, aware of the weight he's added to the conversation and attempting to lighten it.

"Lucky you have me then, yeah?" His faces relaxes into a sympathetic frown. "Right then..."

He turns from Ashford and calls out to the house. "Hullo? You all in the audience there! Who are you?"

Victor freezes in place as if a dog caught doing wrong and smiles slyly.

He slowly approaches and with a bounce in his step takes a place in the lime light.

"The name is Victor gentlemen, how are you this lovely evening?, amazing rendition of Hamlet." He says this almost through his teeth, gritting and choking back the bile and almost sugar coating the pleasantries, with an undertone of kill them with kindness.

Victor stands tall in his light  with his hands in plain sight avoiding any threatening positions.

Ashford's eyes slide from Victor to Ben, then back to Victor.

"Patron of the arts, are you? Or did you get the same 'come follow the footlights at the witching hour for tea and fucking crumpets; then get eaten by shadow monsters' bullshit that I did? Anyone see assigned 'gullible bastard' seating on the way in? I must've missed it; but I think we all should've been sitting there. Stupid fucking cocksucker I am, I thought Ben here just wanted me to see his show. He's into voodoo and all that creepy shit."

Ashford motions to Ben in an almost dismissive motion, then turns back to Victor.

"Name's Ashford, by the way."

Victor begins to dig his finger tips into his palms and releases.

"I guess from your emotional, I have been held too much or too little outburst, you also were dragged here more or less against your will and mentally raped on the way in. I personally like my mental raping with a little foreplay or at least see the face of my penetrator and violator first."

Victor looks over to Ben. "I assume you are Ben, how are you sir?" Smiles brightly but forced.

"Oh and Ashy, I am a "patron" of the arts when my obligations allow me to to enjoy it. I figured while im being violated I would take in a classic theater"

Ashford laughs out loud in a gravelley, rather disconcerting way, cutting off any response Ben might have. He grins, looking over at his playwright friend.

"Shit, Ben, I like this kid! Friend of yours? I sure fuckin' hope so. He's got some fuckin balls calling me 'ashy' too. No qualms about picking a fight with someone, even with no knowledge about whether I can turn 'em fuckin inside out and the like, or even what my real face looks like- apparently no fear of gettin' 'ashied' himself; I can respect that. Really into being raped in your theatre too. You two, uh, 'know' each other in the biblical sense, I take it?"

Ashford smiles a predator's smile and gestures between the two as he says this. He holds his hands out to both of them, inviting the question from either side, the mirth on his face completely genuine.

Victor just keeps smiling as if not phased nor shaken through the violent colorful banter.
"No sir, I do not think I met your friend yet, I am more of a home body, so to be dragged out into night has put me off and in a bad mood"

Victor looks around the theater "Ben, your theater, as in owner, or just a thespian of this hall? Regardless, would be a shame for either of us to mar and maim ourselves and this theater, I only say this because I fully appreciate that we do not know what we are capable of or how far we will take it, and best right now to not test our limits."

Victor continues to look around and take in the sights but tries not to lose track of where Ashford is.
