Re: Walk me through a resolution change

                Hey guys, I've got an odd problem that's probably easily solved, but I need the help of somebody familiar with the game to help me.

 See, the default resolution of the game is out of range of my monitor's available resolutions, so when the game starts, My monitor shuts down and only displays "out of range" so I can't see what's going on.

 Basically, the game works, but to see the game, I'll need to increase the resolution, but I can't see the menu to increase it.

 If anybody would be willing, would you please give me directions in terms of keystrokes, starting from the main menu, to get to and change the resolution?

 By the way, I don't know if this is important, but I've installed the 1.2 and unofficial 3.5 patches, just so you know.

 Don't have the game installed, so can't get you a step by step. But sometimes, I get this problem as well. Most of the time, I can just minimize the game, (ctrl-esc or alt-tab), then maximize it again, and the game shows on the screen properly. This usually happens for LCDs.

 Else, go into the config files and manually change the resolution. Or you can try this

 Thanks for the advice man.

 Would you mind telling me how to change the resolution from Windows? I found the config file but I couldn't find the line that stored the resolution setting.

 Also, I'm using a CRT monitor, in case you're wondering.

 CRTs. Interesting.

 I don't remember which line it would be under, but just look for numbers that look like solution. For instance, you might find 800x640 or something like that. Likewise, there might be more than 1 config file. Like I said, I haven't play the game in ages.

 Hey man, don't knock the CRT. happy  Personally, I find them to be very superior to LCD monitors in just about every way when it comes to gaming. A good CRT is every bit as sharp as an LCD, scales better with varying resolutions, makes ghosting a non-issue, and has better contrast ratios for truer black levels.

 Also, LCD monitors have this odd visual quality about them that comes from having the individual pixels stacked directly on top of one another in a grid pattern. CRT pixels are stacked like bricks in a brick wall, with the center of every pixel lined up with the meeting edges of the pixels directly above and below. This, I think, makes for a clearer pattern.

 I'll never go to LCD. I'll wait until SED comes out, then switch to that instead. SED will be the best of CRT and LCD technologies combined.

 CRT = Portable heaters.
 LCD = Power savers.

 As for picture quality. I can't really tell the difference between the two other than for DVD. The CRT monitor I gave to my mom plays DVD movies very sharp and crisp (Colors blend flawlessly), but my widescreen plays DVD movies rather blandly with a lovely haze of pixelation (Making the colors not blend at all). Games look great on my widescreen, but only if I can use my native resolution (1400x900). One thing I have noticed is that Antialis acts strangly on a LCD monitor. CRT monitors are good, but that's assuming you like breaking your back moving them around. Not to mention the extra space needed to place them somewhere secure. My LCD monitor sits on my desk at a location an CRT monitor would never fit right.

  •                 Also, the line for resolution isn't in the config file. I looked.

     I'm guessing that the resolution is a default game value and thus doesn't have to be in the config file UNLESS it is changed from the default value.

     Would somebody please give me the command to change the resolution? Right now, there is no resolution value in my config file.

     First off, the game defaults to 800x600 so if your monitor does not support that setting than you need a different monitor.

     On the other hand, if your monitor is suppose to support 800x600 then your refresh rate might be the problem. Here's what you could do:

     -Right-click on an open space of your desktop
     -Choose properties from the list

     -Click on the settings tab on the Display Properties window
     -Click the Advanced button

     -Now from the next window go to the Monitor tab
     -Set your refresh rate to 60 hertz (Usually a safe setting for most monitors).

     Now try to run the game and see if the problem still occurs. If it does, try messing with all of your herts settings. If no solution is found then I have to ask what kind of monitor are you using? (15'-10 year old monitor?)

                    Thanks so much man. That did it! At 800x600, I was getting too high of a refresh rate and my monitor couldn't keep up.
