Can't get unofficial patch to run
« on: June 09, 2019, 02:02:01 PM »
Can anyone help me? I installed a steam copy of Bloodlines and unofficial patch, and the game worked just fine until final areas. I started to CTD when entering the final Boss area in the tower. I suspected corrupted files, had steam verify game files, but didn't help. I uninstalled the game from steam, reinstalled it, and ran the patcher. Upon realizing that my old saves hadn't transferred, I moved them to the save folder in unofficial patch folder by hand, and finished the game on what I now realizes was the unpatched version. When I tried to start a new game, I realized I wasn't playing a patched version. Ever since launching the unofficial patch via the desctop shortcut created by the patcher only runs the normal version.

A few suggestions:
- block steam to updade/correct files
- make a new link (find "vampire.exe", create a link, right click it, click on properties or whatever is the last option there, add this code at the end of the "destination" text:
Code: [Select]
-game Unofficial_PatchThere is also an analog procedure to add it directly on steam, I don't remember it but it should be on the UP readme)

I'll try blocking steam. Setting the steam client to run UOP happens by entering the snippet to the launch settings  in properties. I've done that years ago. Creating a new link didn't work either.

I would guess that your saves are from an older version of the patch. As you are near the end, you need to reinstall the old patch version which you started on.

I played the whole thing with 10.4 in the last week or so on a clean save, and have since deleted the saves as part of attempting a clean reinstall. My problem is, still, that the unpatched version of the game launches instead of the UOP one.

Have you checked if the game location is still correct or if there are several versions? And you did notice the _ between Unofficial and Patch?

Yep. Plus I haven't modified the link so it should be exactly as the patcher creates it. I also have only one copy of the patcher downloaded, so it should be the correct one. I have since performed a clean reinstall, ie. deleted everything, reinstalled from scratch, and ran the patcher as before. Still no dice.

The patch installer doesn't add the "-game Unofficial_Patch" command line for you, though. Double check that it's still there in the properties, if you're running the game through Steam.

If you're trying to run the game through the desktop shortcut that the installer creates, on the other hand, then it should just work out of the box...

You have to run the game either through Steam with the command line added, or via the shortcut that the installer creates, anyway. Or, of course, if you create a custom shortcut (outside of Steam, I mean) with the command line in place.

Just running the game from the start menu or unmodified through Steam will indeed only launch the base game - but I think as a work-around, you may also be able to just copy all the contents of the Unofficial_Patch folder to your Vampire folder and let it overwrite everything. That way, you won't need to add any command line, which I believe is how the patch used to work before they developed the framework that technically lets you install multiple mods at once.

Yep. Plus I haven't modified the link so it should be exactly as the patcher creates it.

But the patch installer creates the shortcut so it points to the default Steam folder. If you installed the game itself somewhere else, it won't work!

Steam seems to remember my custom settings, so yeah, still there. I checked.

But, alas, doesn't.

Tried that. Didn't work. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

You know, I'm desperate enough to try just that.

Well I'll be damned. That doesn't work either. I copied and overwrote the Vampire folder, and then ran Vampire.exe from the main folder, and I still get the normal version.

Funny story, I, uh, didn't move the game files. They are in the default steam folder. I also double checked the link, and the destination and working directory seems to have right paths.

I'll try rolling back to 10.3 tonight or tomorrow.
EDIT: Didn't work. Starting to think the problem may be with Windows 10 or possibly Steam.

Okay, so the UOP 10.4 runs again. Not entirely sure what happened, but here's what I did. I reverted back to a clean isntall of 10.3 to test things. I also wanted to run some tests on the save files, so I started a new game. I quit, deleted unofficial_patch- folder and the link, and ran patcher for 10.4. When I ran the game again. UOP 10.4 was working.
