Radio loop keeps restarting whenever I enter the room...
« on: July 21, 2014, 07:43:08 am »
The radio loop keeps restarting from the beginning whenever I enter any room with a radio in it ("Hello LA, you are up way past your bed time...").

I've spent the last two evening installing and reinstalling the game with different mods and patches installed to see if any of them cause the problem, but no luck.

I am now running the game on Win &, in compatibility mode to Win 7, program has admin rights.  I tried it both with unofficial patch 9.0 installed and only the official patch 1.2.

I actually remember having this problem on my last playthrough (unofficial patch 6.8, I think).  I would simply turn off the radio in every building back then, but I would really like to listen to it this time around, as I did the very first couple of times I played the game years and years ago.

On my last attempt to trouble shoot the issue, I installed the game on a fresh install of Win 7, with only the drivers installed to make sure that no previous settings hidden somewhere were causing the problem.

Does anyone else have this issue?  Any ideas how to fix it?

That's the way the game is programmed. There are 4 or 5 radio loops which are played depending on the Story State. And whenever you turn a radio on or enter a room with a radio, the current loop will play from the start.

The first couple of times I played the game (win xp back then), I never heard the same text repeating - the radio would continue where it left off when I left the previous room. I wonder if it is the OS that is the issue...

I'm using XP and the radio or TV only reset when I leave the map. If I turn it off and on again, it just continues the recording, it doesn't restart it. I'm using UP Plus 9.0 and from what I've seen it only restarts when the current radio loop is over or the player leaves the map and returns later.
I don't know much about the radio loops on other operating systems, but it shouldn't affect how they work.

So if you leave and re-enter a room on the same map, the radio continues on as well?  That's how I remember it from before, but this is not how it works on Win 7.

Yes :)  Have you ever listened to the radio show in its entirety?  It is goood.

What you want to do is hear part of it in one location, and then the next part in another... without missing anything. Yeah that's realistic. :justabite: Just turn it off/on to start it over, and listen to the whole thing. No problem. Unless you're playing Camarilla/TFN you won't even lose blood points for that time period.

If this is the biggest issue you've had with the game, you're damn lucky!  :taunt: After all the little issues, and some big issues, that I've run into... this wouldn't even show up as the slightest ethereal blip on my Bug Radar.

Yes, the radio continues playing the current loop if I leave a room on the same map.

That's how I remember it from before, but this is not how it works on Win 7.

Maybe some of those conditions for restarting the loops don't work so well on different systems. Try running it in compatibility mode for XP. Also, if you are still in SM, restarting is always an option, that's usually an universal solution for most problems in VtMB. It's still a buggy game, lots of random bugs appear, even with the U.P. installed.
When installing the game, make sure to close all background programs before proceeding, they may interfere with the game in very bad ways.

True, you have no idea how many campaigns I had to restart. Most of the problems I encountered were caused by random bugs.

I think I've been pretty lucky myself, since I only started playing the game less than a year ago (didn't even know about it until then), and I've always had at least the "basic" version of Wesp5's Unofficial Patch. I've still experienced some glitches/bugs, some crashes that required me to replace a DLL, and other minor annoyances... but nothing unresolvable (except making Romero aggro, and I could have just redone the quest but I'm lazy).

People who have been playing since 2004 probably have a lot of horror stories that I just can't compete with. ;)

Your first mistake is that you're using Windows 8 :) If there's one piece of advice I can give to Windows 8 users it's to do whatever it takes to get back to 7.

But I'm not sure about the whole radio loop thing, I seem to remember the entire track always starting from scratch every time I went through some kind of area transition, even on Windows 98 much less XP. It's only when you stay in the same area that you can turn the radio off and back on and continue where you left off (damn strange radios they have in LA ;p).

Or XP :)
Even if Microsoft ended support for it, it's still a good OS (much better than 8 anyway). I use XP, although in a few months, I'll probably have no other option but to install Win 7.

There are a few problems with certain games that conflict with Windows XP and restrict you to 512MB of RAM for some bizarre reason I don't recall completely anymore, it's the only reason I even upgraded to 7, but overall I am satisfied regardless. It's like they say, Windows versions alternate between Really Good{tm} and Teh Suxxorz{tm}, so 98/SE was good, ME sucked, XP was good, Vista sucked, 7 was good, 8 sucked...though 8.1 seems to break the pattern (remember, there was no 7.1 version). I doubt I will ever get another Windows version after 7, the quality of games in general seems to be heading down the toilet since most devs only make games for consoles anymore and PCs are lucky to get a port, if anything at all, and games are the only reason I use Windows at all.

Mark my words, Watch Dogs will be the last mainstream PC game worth playing, ever.

Never noticed that. Can't you set the priority of a game to high? Wouldn't that fix the problem?

Windows 8.1 was more like a fix or a patch, not an entirely new OS. Microsoft also released Windows 8.1 Update 1 to fix what was wrong (that's probably everything) with the previous update.
They failed with most products released lately, so maybe this is indeed the end of the line for Microsoft.

I doubt I will ever get another Windows version after 7, the quality of games in general seems to be heading down the toilet since most devs only make games for consoles anymore and PCs are lucky to get a port, if anything at all, and games are the only reason I use Windows at all.

Sad, but true ...
