EVERYTHING to fix this game from Windows to Linux

YukoValis:
I have had soooo many problems trying to get this game running, I searched so many forums about it. I wanted to share my knowledge and a bit of my adventure in getting this game running. Using both steam, and CD. (not Iso, because I don't use that)

Problem- Various.
Answer- RUN AS ADMIN. Run everything as administrator. I set my steam to auto run like this. Installing anything is best doing with admin options enabled. To do this, right click a programs icon, and find the check box that says "run as admin"

Problem- Ram less then 15 mb!
Answer- two ways to fix this. Install the latest Unofficial patch, http://www.patches-scrolls.de/vampire_bloodlines.php, this is the best way. Although True patch doesn't fix this. The other worse way to fix it is going into run/dxdiag. Then boot/advanced options, and lower your ram to 2 gigs.

Problem- Can't use console.
Answer- easy. Go into steam, right click the game in your library, select "set launch options", and type in -console .there you go.

Problem- Crashes on start up.
Answer- don't ask me why this works.. but it really did for me. go into your steam folder. C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\ common\vampire the masquerade - bloodlines. Copy everything in the "bin" folder, then paste it in the vampire folder. I don't remember WHICH vampire folder the main one or the one in the main one that says Vampire. So do them both
Note: This is also for crashing after the first4 logo screens.

Problem- Crashes when loading different game levels.
Answer- this is actually because of the MP3's of the game. It has a lot of trouble loading them. especially the hospital because it's loading both music and intercom voice. Uninstalling/reinstalling works a lot of times. Though making the sound folder "read-only" helps too. This is one of the harder problems to solve.

Special note: Make sure to disable automatic updates in steam before you patch. If you don't it will overwrite some things back to 1.2 while you patch. After it though, it shouldn't matter (because I KNOW it likes to switch back to auto).

Other things to know.
Compatability mode can help. It's the same tab that you use to make things always run as admin. Switching it to windows XP is the best choice. right click the icon, properties, compatibility.

Besides "-console" you can add other commands to the start up. for instance "-full" makes it run in full screen. Commands are easy. The line should look something like this. "-console -full"

Do NOT try to use any of the sound files in the vampire folder, it will mess them up. If you want to dig through them, copy them to another folder, but even that might be a risk.

The tools folder (you get after patching with the unofficial patch) has a LOT of great things to use at risk. ResPatch, installing for 64, but always make sure you start them with admin.

Sometimes it's just best to uninstall, delete the vampire folder (this is important because leaving files there could mess up the reinstall), and reinstall again. Make sure you do this when re-patching a game to another version. it's just plain easier that way.

That's all I have right now.. more later I am sure.

Regarding running as admin:

One thing I like to do on Windows 7 is to transfer ownership of the game's folder to my user account, and then give that same user account full permissions on that folder (do these for all subdirectories as well, of course). This way, you totally avoid any issues with UAC or the virtualstore.

Installing in one of your user folders might help too, if that's an option.

This is an awesome thread. YukoValis, do you mind if I repost this information on the Clan Quest Mod's FAQ/Known Issues page?

EDIT:

Better still, I think I will just post a link to this thread, because none of these problems are actually related to the mod itself so much as the game, and that way you get to more easily retain credit for making this awesome list.

i knew this game was buggy, but to this extent !
did you try anything to test your computers parts, like memtest of chkdsk ?

well, maybe win 7 didn't help much ...

could you elaborate a little on your comp's setup (video card, motherboard ?)

good work posting this info, though.
