Just for curiosit and hoping what I ask is not already asked and/or too much complicated to ask....

If someone wants to translate the game in another language, what are the files to edit? My priority is the UP plus but as a suggestion to the main conversions modders it will really helps a quick guide to where to look ;) thanky in advance

Files to translate are dlgs, quests, notes, items and terminals:

\dlgs

The other files are in subfolders inside vdata.

\vdatasystem (here the quest and the clan explanation and intro)

\vdataitems
\vdatahackterminals
\vdatasigns

probably miss something...

Which languages are you thinking?

For myself is italian, but I've actually no plan in the future to do it. As I said, curiosity: specially if it's not a complicated task (maybe one day). And I've wanted to prompt the idea....

All files are plain txt, easy to change.

I remember play vanilla teen years ago with a spanish translation did by dlan, was really impressive, because they translate all the game, even the pictures, decals and textures in the game are translated.

Last version in done over UP 9.5

You should also translate the .lip files in \sound\character\dlg and subfolders.
All in all, it is a tedious task - dialog phrases alone are more than 52,000. It took me about 3 years to translate all of them to German.
There are tools that come with the fan patch you can use to help you translate files without corrupting them. An unofficial Italian version would be great :)

If they can also help reducing the work in those .lip files it would be great. I hope to have in the future the time to do the italian one (or hoping someone will do it instead of continuing to post the one for the patch 3.0 pushing it as an "all-UP version basic-plus-past-present-future-too". Yes, it happens a lot in italian sites :I)

There is a tool you can edit .lip files with included with the SDK.

From time to time, this happens with the German Patch, too. This is not going to work because strings that have to be translated are kind of 'embedded' in the files that also change variables. These change from patch to patch, and if you replace newer patch files with translated files from an older patch, the changes of the newer patch will be negated. Unfortunately, it is not that easy...

Here you can have a peek at files containing localization.

That includes textures and even some models carved into letters. Some dll files also contain a few items to translate but not that much to be a pain to do them all via hexedits.

We also have ruby script for mass-updating all the thousands of lip files.
Another script for mass-conversion of the accented characters to be viewable in game. I've made some article on the topic of accented characters way back, should be searchable by keyword accented.
