X20 Mod
« on: June 29, 2018, 05:50:33 AM »
As it exists, Bloodlines pretty much only uses the Vampire: The Masquerade part of the World of Darkness. That's probably all Activision had the license for. There are countless companies, organizations, and symbols across the WoD which might be appropriate to see in Bloodlines, but we never did.

For a while I've been noodling with the idea of a mod which places Bloodlines within the wider context of the World of Darkness, but it was way on the backburner. Buuut I sort of accidentally got started on it.

I'm tentatively calling it the X20 Mod. Similar to the design mentality of the 20th Anniversary Editions for the tabletop RPGs, which stand as sort of "Greatest Hits" albums, with your favourite tracks rerecorded and remastered, I'm tweaking Bloodlines in a way I feel makes it shine more strongly as part of that larger universe. Your mileage may vary: like many mods, this is primarily for me, but I'm sharing it in case anyone else is into it.

This is never going to be a big content mod with new maps or NPCs or anything. Just a few tweaks so it falls more firmly into place, and feels more comfortable in that larger context.

I replaced the sign for "SunCo Gasoline" in Santa Monica with "Endron Oil & Gas". It was a good candidate because unlike places like the Surfside Diner, SunCo is never referred to by name: it's just "an abandoned oil tank" at the end of the street, so I could change its name without contradicting any dialogue.

In the World of Darkness (specifically Werewolf: The Apocalypse), Endron International is a corrupt oil company, and subsidiary of Pentex. Sign colours based on the shirt worn by the Endron guy on the cover of Subsidiaries: A Guide to Pentex.

Would love to work with you on this since I happen to be doing an HD retexture currently. so I don't hit the parts you are working on with my textures.

I'm a Wod newb, but an old hand at graphic art.

Love this. was planning a deep dive in lore to do the same thing.

That's great! I'd love to throw some ideas around, and given you seem to be more familiar with the engine than I am, you'll probably have an easier time of things when I get to the point where I'd want to do things like applying new graffiti to walls or something which isn't just "replace an existing texture." :)

Sending you a private message.

Wasn't Endron Oil defunct by this time in oWoD lore? It was taken down by a combination of the Technocratic Union, the Glasswalkers, the Virtual Adepts, a handful of vampires, and some completely clueless mortal organizations.

That said, there's still plenty of Pentex Subsidiaries around (and no real reason why Endron couldn't have been "restructured" following the financial and criminal collapse, though it'd be under intense scrutiny by the above groups). I always thought there should be some Tellus Games cabinets on the pier or adverts for their stuff in the net cafe. In Hollywood, there should be movie posters for the W.O.L.F. movie. Maybe the crappy clinic in Santa Monica could be run (poorly) by Magadon.

How hard is it to alter the text on items? Maybe some of Fat Larry's inventory could mention that they are Herculean Firearms brand.

It might be funny to have one of the abandoned buildings in Downtown re-branded as a Blockparty Video storefront, though that might be going past what you want to mod.

I had the same thoughts about the clinic!!!

throwing up tagging around cities sounds doable. easy enough in other source games.

was also thinking Magadon branding on all medical themed inventory items.

I could even put the herculean brand on my custom gun textures when I get there.

Nope, still around.

Even so, this is a property that's clearly been abandoned for quite some time, so even if Endron wasn't around anymore, that wouldn't affect any rusty signs hanging in front of derelict properties.

Believe me, I have plans. :) You've keyed into some of what I want to do. I don't want to flood the whole game with Pentex subsidiaries, though: there are plenty of companies in the World of Darkness, and I while I do want to include some references to other game lines, I don't want to turn Bloodlines into a "Werewolf game," if that makes sense.

Oh, wow, neat! I had always heard that the beta version of the Source engine that Obsidian was forced to use for Bloodlines meant that any sort of modification was difficult in the extreme. Things like just adjusting the models slightly causing textures to glitch and animations to break.

Maybe not on all of them. Magadon isn't the only medical corporation in the WoD, after all -- they just happen to be the cheapest. Perhaps DNA branding some of the more expensive stuff?

Oh wow, cool! That'd be pretty awesome to see.

Fair enough, then. :)

Yes, I quite understand. It's just that Pentex subsidiaries are so well known and illustrated in the books. That's why I mentioned Blockparty Videos, what with them being a non-Pentex corp.

Would it be possible to make custom radio spots? The audio files seem to conflate the commercials with the Deb of Night stuff, which makes me think that it might not be possible to have different commercials without editing the files directly (I was really hoping that the DoN and commercials were separated out per-file and some text file somewhere indicating what to play or making random selections based on game state, but that doesn't seem to be the case). Having a few commercials for other corporations or their products on the radio would be neat if feasible.

rooting around this website will lead you to a pre sdk version of level editing. that one seemed more stable, but more difficult.

adding a new texture as a decal should be doable. that's nothing like moving a model.

SHOULD be doable lol. won't know until I try. people were adding things such as lights in places like the bail bonds with no issues I read of via the text method however. So based on that I assume lesser stuff than a light will be fine. after all Wesp5 changes door knobs and more around in the patches.

Not trying to take over responding on this topic but I can edit radio spots if nobody else can I suppose. I have FL studio (serious audio program), a boom stand, pop filter, and Blue yeti mic. So I thought about redoing the tutorial security guard's voice with a higher quality recording.

Yes, it's easy to add stuff to maps using the VPKTool, but as I already wrote in the other thread changing maps would make the project incompatible with each new patch or mod. It would be better to keep the combined x20 hd mod texture and sound only.

My apologies to those who love bargains, but the Baby Sale is over.

It's been replaced with an ad for the Orpheus Group, a firm with specially-trained "projectors" who investigate ghosts and hauntings for a reasonable fee.

In this case I put the focus more on the "contacting loved ones" angle, otherwise Therese probably would have contacted them to clear out the Ocean House instead of waiting for the PC.

I'm going to work my way through Downtown's posters and billboards before adding an updated zip file.

Some stuff, I try to keep thematically similar. "Tanked Vodka" is now a billboard for Woody Creek bourbon, a product of King Breweries and Distilleries.

that bottle resembles one of the two at foxy boxes. on the desk with the computer.

Shame it doesn't show up at the Asylum (unsure about other bars since I'm on a first playthrough)

I can't wait to get my hands on a few of these to test them alongside these others!

Looking GREAT!

That's probably because I put it into Foxy Boxes with the UP as it was an unused model :)!

I didn't even notice! I should go back and take another look. I just grabbed a bottle from Google and tweaked it a bit. What a great bit of serendipity!

Meanwhile, the Peckoning is over, and Jayne Jonestown and the Graveyard Skullfuckers are in town for one night only.
