The Undisciplined Caitiff Mod Released
« on: May 24, 2020, 06:50:48 pm »
Today I released the UC mod on the Nexus. The core idea is you begin unlife as Caitiff, Thinblood, and Clanless, without any disciplines. As you play you will gain access to disciplines and a Clan, as early as Downtown or as late as Chinatown depending on your choices/actions.

There are new quests, changed original quests, new items, new skins, changed skins, changed gameplay elements, changed scenes, etc, etc. It is a mix of new and old, I hope an enjoyable mix, enough old to be familiar and enough new to spice things up.

How much of the mod is experienced depends on a persons playstyle and how much attention they pay to details. For example, there are 9 variations on the Ming Xiao temple sequences and which one a person gets is determined by decisions they make starting as early as Santa Monica. However, if a person got the ending closest to the original (the original is not possible) they may think the mod changes very little.

If you would like to try the mod and experience the most in one playthrough (without resorting to examining all the game files) I suggest playing as a female with Appearance 2 and fairly high Seduction by mid/late game.

History: I decided to do a playthrough where I never used any disciplines and eventually got tired of looking at them in the HUD when they didn't exist in my world. So I made a 10 minute mod to fix that and it eventually grew into this, as mods tend to do.

Congratulations to the release of your mod! It's always good to see new things, and while I probably don't have the time to play it, I already checked the changelog for possible fixes that could be applied to the UP. With your permission I will include them in the next version, crediting you when I copy your files directly and not, when you just send me on the right trail :)!
P.S.: I already fixed the bug where Ash talks too soon in the sewers and the Fu Syndicate blades stop when loading a save. I also took a look at your Romero blood-doll solution and your Prophet workaround, but I don't know yet if I should include them. Do you know the reason for the latter bug? But I would really like to use the mesh corrections that avoid getting stuck in warrens 5. Can you please point me to how you fixed this?

The root cause of the prophet stopping is if you change maps while a scripted sequence is active that effectively kills the scripted sequence, meaning it can never be accessed again. Since the scripted sequence was the second link in the prophet chain, when it dies the entire chain is broken forever. I updated my post about how to reproduce/test this in the other thread a few days ago when I discovered the root cause (but hadn't yet figured out a good workaround). Since there is no way to prevent this there is no fix for it only a workaround.

The sticky floor thing in Warrens 5 is a specialized mesh for use anywhere, maybe the pathname I gave it was a poor choice in retrospect. The model is models/scenery/... oh I guess you can see the path in the image. Just position them in the floor as needed, in Warrens 5 I used two, added to the end of the BSP file. They are basically just a large collision mesh with beveled edges so there are no textures for the player to see. They float the player above the problem areas, obviously put the beveled side up

P.S. I didn't make the changelog till nearly the very last thing, very bad practice, so it is woefully incomplete. I also fixed the bug where the sarcophagus key falls to the floor when loading from a save file to finish the fight. You might be interested in that as well. The fix is in the BSP file so at the very end, similar to the floor fix, just an invisible mesh for the key to sit on.

Ejem... I'm having a problem at very eary. After intro (I skipped), I can't speak with Jack (don't have a valid reply)... I tried to find an alternate solution to leave (but I don't find any). Is it a bug? Is it intended?

Thanks for trying the mod and giving feedback, I am very sorry for the difficulty you experience.

No it is not intended and I can't understand how this can happen. I just re-downloaded the mod from the Nexus and tried every possible dialogue choice and could not get it to happen. Would you explain how you produced this error? I will need some more information to try and understand this.

Vortex will not work with this mod, it must be installed manually. You unzipped the mod into a VTMB install where a UP is also installed? You ran the installer cmd file after that to install the mod and it created a desktop shortcut and it reported no errors or other issues? You launched the mod from the Desktop shortcut and choose male or female Caitiff clan?

I installed manually, I unzipped in the VTMB folder where there's the UP subfolder, but not in the same... I launched from shortcut and saw the logo etc... chose female. I tried to change map via console, but when teleport to apartment I was a ventrue-male looking... Pehaps I run in some kind of issue of my installations... I mod myself so, maybe folder had trash... I will try a clean install the evening.

Hm, but I tested it over and over again changing the map to Bailbonds without it breaking. I'll have to look closer at this.

So you didn't fix it, but just hid it :)! I did this often myself using already existing models. Maybe I will do that in warrens 5. I'm not aware of the sarcophagus key falling through the floor bug. In which map does this happen?

Hello Norrwin!I deleted all from bloodlines in my pc, and made a clean install.Had same problem, but I think I found what happened. Jack first line in tutorial have a condition if you are malkavian or not, looks like player dont fulfill any of those requirements. To prove it, I added a third answer without conditions and it worked.

Just out of curiosity, why did you hide all the dialogs etc. in a vpk archive? And how old is the patch version you used as basis for your mod? Seems there are still all the typos in the item descriptions and other files that have been corrected for ages.

@argikt: If you install manually, you have to either move the vpk file from the caitiff subdirectory to /vampire and rename it, or you have to unpack it into the caitiff subdirectory. Else you get the dialog files (and some other stuff) from vanilla, and that will cause problems like no clan logo in the char-sheet.

Yuhu, I think I finally fixed the prophet bug after the hints that Norrwin gave me :)! I made it so all the sequences are canceled once you leave the map...

If you follow the instructions in the video I updated in the No voice for doomsday guy thread you can not fail to reproduce the problem, it is 100%. Edit: I see you posted while I was typing, if you want to test your fix this is how to test it. I tried many variations on what it sounds like you tried but none of them worked, maybe you found the secret combination!

In the Ming Xiao fight if you fail the fight and have to reload a save from in the her boss fight arena area the key can fall to the floor when you do finish the fight.

If you follow the install instructions and execute the install command successfully there is no need to move and rename the pack file or extract the contents as Malkav suggests.

But I am still unclear on how you got the error you did, either you are Malkavian or are not Malkavian I don't see how those can fail?

Just out of curiosity, why did you hide all the dialogs etc. in a vpk archive? And how old is the patch version you used as basis for your mod? Seems there are still all the typos in the item descriptions and other files that have been corrected for ages.

I wasn't trying to hide them, it was something I wanted to try for various reasons, aesthetics, efficiency, and just to try something new, and so I did.

It is based off the official 1.2 patch, again to offer something different. Everyone has played the Official Patches countless times but I doubt many people know too much about how the 1.2 patch plays.

When I started I went through various iterations of trying patches from True Gold to the latest UP and in the end decided it would be easier to achieve my vision for what I wanted by just starting from scratch. So the game is as well patched for gameplay bugs as I can make it without changing anything about the v1.2 patch, but for visuals, spelling, sounds, etc that are not potentially game breaking they are largely unchanged. Unless they bug me personally or needed to be change to accommodate my mod direction.

Brian Mitsoda says and I highly agree with:
Quote
Likely connected with this desire to tell human stories in a believable manner is his distaste for visual feedback: “I'd rather the player see as little dialogue, floating numbers, chart-o-graphs as possible and stay immersed in the game.

If you run the install cmd file per the instructions you do not have to move and rename the pack file (or extract it). The installer cmd will move and rename it, check for save and config file conflicts, and create the desktop shortcut.

The only time you have to rename the pack file (but still not move it) is if you want to install the mod directly into the Vampire directory like in the old days before ModLoader, which I don't recommend people do, also per the instruction on the Nexus page.

I know what the cmd file does, I have looked into it before even extracting the zip file. And I decided that I prefer to have the archive extracted so I can look into the game files directly.
