reassigning skins
« on: September 09, 2018, 02:55:26 PM »
Question....if you download a skin for another clan...say ventrue and want to use that skin for a DIFFERENT clan...is it possible to do that? If so  how...I know absolutely nothing about modding so if it IS possible hopefully not anything too complicated...

Being on the phone and not on my pc I can't make a more precise answer, but.... I know there is a file where is written each pc model directory (and probably other ones). Don't remember which but editing it is easy because is a text file. Just search online a guide to change models (or wait if someone else makes a more precise reply). Then apply the reskin and your desired mod will appear on your desired clan.

You can apply a skin only to the model it is intended for. So the answer is yes and no. You can use the new skin for another clan, but since you have to use the original model (and texture paths) you can't keep the original skin for the clan for which the new skin is intended unless you know how to change texture paths.

Let's say you downloaded a Ventrue skin and want to use it for your Toreador.
First step, you copy the downloaded files (textures and maybe models) into the right directories.
Then you open /vdata/clandoc000.txt with a texteditor and search for player_toreador.
There you find lines like these:
         "M_Body0"      "models/character/pc/male/toreador/armor0/toreador_Male_Armor_0.mdl"
         "M_Body1"      "models/character/pc/male/toreador/armor1/toreador_Male_Armor_1.mdl"

Here you copy the armor lines from player_ventrue. Then you have to decide what to do with theVentrue. Either keep the same model (and new skin) or copy the Toreador lines to the ventrue entry, making him look like a Toreador.

Or if you want to risk it, you can use the vpk tools to change the texture paths for themodel files.
If your new skin comes with model files, use these, else use the original Ventrue models (you may have to extract these from the vpk archives).
In the /models/character/pc/(fe)male directory create a new subdirectory /myventrue and copy the model files there, keeping all the subdirectories intact.
Do the same with the texture files in /materials/models... and put the new skin files in /myventrue.
Open all model files in /myventrue with the model tools and change the texture path from "ventrue" to "myventrue", but leave everything that does not contain "ventrue" alone.
Now you go to clandoc and replace all the Toreador lines with the paths to /myventrue and leave the original ventrue lines there.
Now your Ventrue looks like he always has and the Toreador looks like the Ventrue with the new skin.

Not sure I understood all of that....but seems as if what I did do was wrong....and I was trying a ventrue to toreador....I just copied the modded files and c hanged all the names from where ti said ventrue to toreador  :P
Guess that's why it didn't work....oh well

only reason started looking at others as the first toreador mod I tried (and liked) has a weird effect with the hair ( a pony tail flipping around, going THROUGH the character and sometimes becoming TWO ponytails) Up until tried that mod I was happy with how the character looked initially.
