Poster modding help!
« on: January 21, 2019, 12:02:54 PM »
So just what the title says. I appreciate the vanilla posters, but I've played the game through so many times I'd like to mod stuff in myself now! I'd like to start easy so I'm opting to go with the posters.

I know the basic idea of how to do this: take a pic of your choice, cut it into the correct dimensions, name it to take the place of the chosen poster (say, VV) save it into the correct format and that should be it. Thing is, I don't know where some of the posters are, nor what they are called. I checked out some previous threads and tried to search for things like "tawni" in my folders but I got nothing. A friend helped me switch around some posters (namely those of Damsel, Xiao, VV and Jeanette) but where are the rest located, and what are they called? (these are of course in \Unofficial_Patch\materials\models\scenery\misc\posters ) I'm assuming the logical thing here which is I have to replace them with my "custom" posters so I need to know the path to the rest of the posters and what they are called, namely the Imalia, Tawni, Vamp's Beer, Don't drive and the amputee ones.

Mind you I'm about 99% certain they are right in front of me and I just haven't noticed them, but yeah :/ could someone give me a hand here?

Most of the game files are stored in those .vpk files. The game search each file in the game folder and if it's not present he search it in these .vpk archives. This really makes modding easier. So if you want to mod a file you have to extract it with the VPK tool or the Packfile Explorer (from the SDK), edit it and then place in the "vampire" folder (where are the .vpk files), or one big mod which uses the mod loader (like the UP) with the same path structure in the archives (one letter wrong and the game won't find it).

For example: if you want to mod the file "example folder\example.file" extract it from the archives, edit it as you prefer then go on the "vampire" or mod directory. If the example folder is not present make it yourself then place here the modded file.

Another more way would be to install the SDK and have it extract all the files. Then you can find the one the patch doesn't change more easily!

Oooh, I get it I think. I extracted all the files because why not, I can fiddle with them later when I learn more. Seems simple enough!

Or you can pickup a mod with all the files in the right folders and work on them....

Either works - but do you have a suggestion for a mod? I'm just generally happy to fiddle and mod the game - a friend already showed me how to do custom emails so I can have some characters from our tabletop campaign make little cameos  :vampsmile:

Well, if you mean modding textures you know how to convert them to a .tga file and then convert it back? Just to know if you know the basics

Doesn't the VPK tool have that conversion function? Convert TTZ to .tga & convert VTF to .tga ?

That one convert tth/ttz to tga and dds to tth/ttz. And you can convert one file at the time.

There is another one on the SDK (which does tth/ttz to tga and tga to tth/ttz abd you can convert more than one file at the time) but if you like the VPK tool method it's not a problem, both works :)

Any other questions? ;)

Imalia
pack002.vpk: materials/models/scenery/misc/pinupposter/pinup.vmt

Tawni, Amp Beer, Don't drive
pack002.vpk: materials/models/scenery/misc/posters/
pack007.vpk: materials/models/scenery/misc/posters/

The last one, no idea

From round 1 (Basic):
  • Jeanette (jeanetteposter.ttz)
  • Velvet Velour (vvposter.ttz)
  • Damsel (damselposter.ttz)
  • Ming-Xiao (minxiaoposter2.ttz)

From round 2 (Plus):
  • Imalia (pinup.ttz)
  • Tawni Sessions (tawni_poster.ttz)
  • Claira Killenbach calendar (poster1a.ttz)
  • Don't Drive Blind (poster3a.ttz)

All of these are under the directory "/materials/models/scenery/misc/posters/" (with the exception of "pinup.ttz" which is under "/materials/models/scenery/misc/pinupposter/")

(I don't know in which archive is each file....)

I've already found them, but thank you :) only thing I'm confused about is the VMF format. How would I go about creating one or converting stuff to that format? I see the option in the VTFedit tools but when I created one and opened it up with the notepad it looked quite different from the already existing ones. Pretty sure I'm being daft about it but ah well.

Every other format I've had no problem creating with the converters.

Can you copy here the text of both files?

Test poster (this is not yet in the correct place, I'm just testing things for now): "LightmappedGeneric"
{
   "$basetexture" "Users/Viatrixa/Desktop/Poster Check/Test/jeanetteposter"
   "$translucent" 1
}
Actual poster in the correct place:
// created in bloodlines sdk
"VertexLitGeneric"
{
   "$baseTexture" "models/scenery/misc/posters/jeanetteposter"
}

edit: I was just told that I don't need to edit them actually, and that I shouldn't mess with them so I guess that's that!

edit 2: Tested. They work!  :rock:

Thank you so much for the tips and help!

I would have said the same thing before but I preferred to be scrupulous (just in case....)
