oh god i broke it what did i do

Histories don't work at all now. when i made the half-blind history, the other histories worked fine, but after i finished adding antichrist it was all broken now even my previous character is without history even though she had one before. I found a part where there were two of the "critterscope" lines in it and fixed it but still oh god what did i do.
the only edits i made are as follows

These two were working, until i updated them a bit, i found a few missing } that i fixed, but they didn't seem to fix it.

Your kindness in the face of all things has granted you some form of blessing, and the education your parents gave you is valuable as well" // changed by wesp

Okay i figured out part of the problem when my history became "subtly insane", part of the problem was that i added the history in the middle rather than at the end, but now that its fixed, and says the correct history, i'm not getting the bonuses from it.

WHAT DID I DO WRONG D:? i don't know anymore please help me.

Looks like the problem with that history is the CritterScope line. It has to be as I posted previously.

Code: [Select]
"CritterScope"     "Kindred(Gangrel), Kindred(Ventrue), Kindred(Nosferatu), Kindred(Malkavian), Kindred(Toreador), Kindred(Tremere), Kindred(Brujah)"

Looks like there were a few missing }'s too, which I added in the quote above.

Thanks so much! I made my history, i'm going to try it out with a new character, but is there any way to change history mid-game? i'm already to the warehouse mission and don't want to have to start over if i can avoid it.

   vchar_edit_histories 1

didn't work.
AFAIK, there is no way to change histories midgame, and the vchar variable only decides if histories are allowed at all.

There are the "Vhistories" and "Vhistory" commands. The first will list the histories available to the character's clan/gender, and the second will set the character's history when paired with a number from the numbered list that Vhistories provides.

However, the only problem with this, is the fact that the game will revert the char sheet back to the start, i.e if you have most of the sheet filled, it will be nearly empty once the new history is applied.

I've noticed something else, as well. It could be I'm just adding them in wrong (I've had this problem before, deleted the new histories, then rewrote them and it seemed to work), but after a point of adding new entries to the histories000 and traiteffects000 files, the histories no longer show up in the selection list during the Clan/Gender/History character creation stage. But the older Histories I've made still do.

Here's what I got:

   HistoryData
   {
      Text
      {
         "Name"            "Lawman's Friend"
         "Description"         "Daddy was a cop, and HIS daddy was a cop. Maybe you were a cop, too, before that sting on that freaky club went so wrong. You grew up around guns, tough cars, and guys with big moustaches, giving you +2 to Firearms and +1 to Investigation. But as far as you're concerned, dead bodies are supposed to stay dead, and your... resuscitation has shocked you to your core, and you can never raise your Humanity above 6."
         "ShortDescription"      "Advantages: +2 to Firearms, +1 to Investigation."
         "ShortPenaltyDescription"   "Disadvantages: Maximum 6 Humanity."
      }

      General
      {
         "InternalName"      "Lawman's Friend"
         "CritterScope"      "Kindred(Brujah), Kindred(Tremere), Kindred(Ventrue)"
         "Effect"      "History (Lawman's Friend)"
      }
   }

   HistoryData
   {
      Text
      {
         "Name"            "Manchurian Candidate"
         "Description"         "You can lie to the mortals: /"Vampires? There are no such thing as vampires!/" You can lie to the Camarilla: /"I'm a loyal and upstanding citizen, yessir!/" But you can't lie to yourself about what you've become after the Archbisop and his team of Tzimisce torturers got ahold of you. You can bluff your way past almost anything, but every time you look in a mirror, all you see is the thieving, murdering, lying, Humanity 4 monster behind your eyes."
         "ShortDescription"      "Advantages: +1 to Charisma, Intimidation, and Subterfuge."
         "ShortPenaltyDescription"   "Disadvantages: Maximum 4 Humanity."
      }

      General
      {
         "InternalName"      "Manchurian Candidate"
         "CritterScope"      "Kindred(Brujah), Kindred(Gangrel), Kindred(Malkavian), Kindred(Nosferatu), Kindred(Toreador), Kindred(Ventrue)"
         "Effect"      "History (SBT Manchurian Candidate)"
      }
   }

As near as I can tell everything's in order, but "Lawman's Friend" shows up on the proper Clan lists, but "Manchurian Candidate" (and anything I add past it) doesn't show up anywhere. Even if I got the Trait Effects section wrong, it should still show up on the selection list, just not have any effect.

Is that why it's not working? 'cause I have other histories that don't use quotation marks, and they're not showin' up, either.

Let me guess, these histories are below the one with the " in the file.
Not matching braces or wrong quotation marks cause a parser error, and then the remainder of the file is ignored.

@emilin: No, the vclan and vhistory commands completely reset your character. I'm not sure right now, but afaik you will also loose all your equipment.

I don't know what exactly caused it, but I've had an issue before which caused at least Blood Buff to simply not work. I forget exactly, but that stopped completing the tutorial, since using it is obviously required. The other disciplines might've had the same issue.

It might've been because of the one or two histories I added, but I couldn't see anything in the code that was wrong. So I re-installed the game(which was rather quick, since I just had to copy an existing vanilla install which I had backed up, and then install CQM onto the copy). I didn't really mess with the histories after that, at least not with that install of the game. With the ones I have, I haven't seen that bug again.
