Title: Kindred: The Darkest Nights
Post by: Malkyjeff on January 11, 2011, 10:54:05 pm
Recently lost a few major battles, the crippled Camerilla struggle to hold onto the domain of Detroit to the ever lasting growing Lasombra army. What will the Camerilla plan in their state of emergency during their Darkest Nights, and how can they secure the safety of the Masquerade with all the jihad?

A large group of friends and myself are in pre-production of a youtube mini series based off Vampire The Masquerade. We hope to start production in late May at the earliest and don't finish & post near the end of the year. I post this thread for your guy's support in our idea of entertainment with VTM. We look forward into making this dream become a reality.

Where are you guys located? I have some film contacts in BC and California, as well as a couple in NY.
Also, what's your production sound setup look like?

We're all located near Detroit Michigan. I myself haven't gotten to see how the photography and production equipment. Right now they're dabbling with what they can do with their new toys.

I hope sometime in late feb to mid march we could post a live action trailer to give you guys a glimps of how it'll look.

For now we're making the plotlines of each episode.

Ah cool! Well I've been working in the film industry in Vancouver for the last 3 years, and before that I was involved in music composition for visual media. Not to toot my own horn but I have a pretty good handle on how the film industry works, and if you guys had any questions at all in the formulative stages (I know it can be confusing as hell to set up your own shoot)- feel free to let me know.

Best of luck you guys! Glad you're keeping the dream alive so to speak, hehe :)   :cometome:

I fully appreciate the support Malavis, believe me if you lived in MI I would have you over in a heartbeat.
I forgot to mention this is a little to no budget film (at least the first season). However if this becomes popular in any way, we could be accepting sponsors in any future seasons.

I'll be keeping this project posted as it progresses.

Well being as I am making this film, the equipment is not the best, thus why I am trying to ask friends that have the appropriate items to lend them to me.
But alas, this is a dream for both of us. I myself being a huge LARP VTM geek, well it seems as though it has been far too long since we have seen anything come out of this specific genre in quite some time. I figure since the new WOD trailer was released, then maybe, just maybe we can produce something that can be excitable for the fans and other viewers.
Hope you all keep updated on this.

Will this be kinda in the same vein (pun intended) as Kindred: The Embraced? I noticed the "We are all around you" quote and it reminded me of that short-lived but great (imo) series.

Kindred the embraced was one of our inspirations to do this. Yes I've seen the short series (tragic accident of that one actor). With all this video editing and effects software you can torrent download now adays, its a lot easier (and free) to add in vamps turning into ash, glowing eyes, and ect. We're hoping to make this a hit.

Even if its in the same vein, I hope you plan to stay just as close to the source material as Bloodlines did(in a story sense, anyway). Maybe it wasn't bad, but Kindred: The Embraced just...didn't stay close enough. I mean, every thing I've seen suggests that Vamps in the WOD stay away from sunlight like the plague, but then you have this, where they can bear it after they've fed. Defiantly not what I'd even think of doing.

Definetely Maxus, we're going to make this for new audiences who dont know VTM and at the same time for VTM fans. I've been reminding the main writer to be sure to include (for example) "the masquerade" and the meaning behind it. I noticed in Kindred the embraced that they waited so long to include WHY these vampires aren't exposing themselves in the general public.

Also while most of the clan characters were choosen nicely, I think I remember that everybody was able to turn into a wolf...

As everyone who has ever shot a night-time movie can tell you: Save yourself a lot of headache: Shoot Day-For-Night. Unless you have many thousands to spend on lighting, that is.

I read that that's one reason they did that 'you can stand the sun if you've just fed' thing... because they couldn't afford to always shoot at night.  Also: the 'no Tremere' decision was because they didn't have the budget for magical special effects (and they were afraid magic + vampires would be too cheesy anyway).

No game or book ever makes the transition to TV or movie totally intact.  I still liked the show.

I'd just say be careful not to follow WW's concepts too closely if you intend on making any money (without licensing) from it or they'll shut you down real quick.

I like the idea of making a small independant production on youtube, some of them turn into a success like The Guild, Legend of Neil or Ask A Ninja which proves that alot can be done even with almost no budget but its tons of work.

Some constructive criticism that I debated if I actually want to write but ill write it anyway:
The Trailers could use some work as far as the length of the cuts go even if you use something as simple as still image and text they trail too long where the pace is reduced to a crawl while there is nothing moving on the screen to stimulate the viewer.

I'm curious about the production itself, will you be using Green/Blue screen with compositing or 3d? nowdays even though its alot of work it can be done at very little budget thanks to open source programs like Blender or CineFX(www.blender.org (http://www.blender.org) http://www.cinefx.org/ (http://www.cinefx.org/)). Personally I usually use After Effects(commercial) for Compositing but I have heard Blender can also be used as Video Node based Compositor to do some pretty cool stuff.

We actually might make the Tremere clan in the show, we do have the software for professional magic effects.  Also we will do most day shooting, now since there are applications that can give the illusion of nighttime. Gotta love that hollywood magic!!

Cutting DFN is very tricky though- contrast ratios can get wonky very quickly, plus shadows become a big issue, requiring sun muters.

Anyway, best of luck- there are some good comments on here, worth thinking about.
My one cautionary word would be: Make sure you've got the production quality up before you get started, All of the independent projects that get by on their kitsch (like ask a ninja, the guild, etc) get by on their humor. Selling the gothic-punk atmosphere and keeping it serious is going to be MASSIVELY difficult.

I've shot 2 VTM series pilots myself, with the intention of pitching a series based on the Clan Novel series (Fall of Atlanta) sinking about 4.5 grand into it, and so far have not come out with anything I'm happy with. Trust me, it's WAY harder than you initially think.
Good actors are an ABSOLUTE must. Overly moody= Tw!light. Underacted= Boring.

To some of the comments posted.
We are using After Effects for the series- We are currently situating what effects we will be using for the series
I do understand how hard it is to make something based off VTM. I believe in myself and my actors go, mainly this is a project for fun. I know alot of criticism will be given, but hey, everyone has theyre own opinion ya know? :)
Were all fans of VTM and we all really want to put alot of hard work into this and just have fun.

I personally am not using a budget, I have my own equipment and I know my way around a camera and editing, My boyfriend is a mastermind at effects and such.
We do have some great newb actors working in this.

All in all, I hope it comes out well, if not, then hey, we had fun with it and hopefully gave some entertainment:)

The trailers were my first made, not really intended for public knowledge, but it was still posted, mainly just a teaser, we will however be making a live action trailer in march or april.

Thanks again to those who have posted. I appreciate the comments and constructive help.

Let me know if you need a sound Designer or a composer, I'd be happy to lend my skills to the effort.

Best of luck!

Haha, if they ever get off the cutting room floor, sure. (Figuratively speaking)

I've got about 16 hours of footage I still have to get through, but I could always throw a trailer together or something for you guys.
They're not posted yet, and they were all shot DFN, sooooo currently the vamps are walking around in the day ;) A little cheesy looking.

Doesn't all have to be DFN you know

This project I participated in was done solely in a blue screen studio and composited later and sets created using layers of Still frames and abit of 3d to create and all the actors are live action. Much of the film Noir lightning was done using color correction and fake lightning on top of the already exsisting lightning.(see Making of).

It doesn't look especially real but it creates the mood

so you can use a similar technique to Avoid having to deal with :
-turning day into night
-Dependance on different light tempretures during different time of the day when filming which can really fuck up continuity.
-Having to construct sets in multiple locations which can be a pain especially if you have to rig and dismantle tracks for Dolly Cranes or moving grips.

Holy shit--- robert de niro????

What role did you have on this film?
Title: Re: Kindred: The Darkest Nights
Post by: Radical21 on January 14, 2011, 04:40:54 am
The trailer was more of a spoof(A Project in colaboration between the Animation and Film Departments at our college) so robert de niro's appearce was more of a joke on part of the director, the whole thing was meant to be a sort of Film Noir cliche, and its not a commercial project so I don't think he will sue them .

Anyway on my part I dont mind if the set doesn't look as realstic, only that it sets the right Atmosphere and theme to fit the enviroment and that there is good acting to support it.
Many Sci-fi productions make use of Matte-paintings and some australian low budget sci fi still manages to be successful even with poor visual effects (Spellbinder for example :P)

I actually really liked the trailer for Chesire. I mean it reminds me so much of SIN CITY, very nice indeed, I know ours will NOT look anywhere near as good, since we are noobs at creating. But as I said, mainly for fun. But if it gets somewhere, then maybe I can get sponsorship to get the really good equipment. I will be doing green screen, which is a marvelous thing these days.

Dear Rad,

Stop thread jacking.

New threads are free.

Sorry was not my intent to hijack the thread only to give example of how things can work without Day to Night conversion of footage that I felt might help the Darkest Night team to get good results without having to deal with the infamous problems related to shooting at night or shooting at day and transforming it to night.. I only choose that example because its accompanied by a Compositing "Making of Video"

I hope the Darkst Nights would be a worthy adaptation of VTM and Im looking forward to watching it.

he wasn't hijacking anything, just showing us an interesting way to use a blue screen with his experience. Personally I think it woulda been stupid to start a new thread when addressing to this one.
