Increasing Texture Resolutions
« on: November 28, 2010, 08:07:13 PM »
I was playing around today with the textures of NPC bodies and noticed that some of the NPCs that have logos on their clothing, like Fat Larry had some pretty blurry graphics. I thought to myself, I wonder if I doubled the resolution of the graphic file and reapplied the logos, would it be rendered in the game as a better quality graphic? Well here's the results, I was really surprised how much better they looked and I wonder if this could be applied to all NPC body graphics... or even better to the other graphics like signs and bricks too.

1024x512 Resolution (Bloodlines Default)

Increased to 2048x1024 (The graphic was double in size but clearly worth it. I bet we could even take this resolution higher)

Thanks Mv.c9. I just thought I'd bring this to the communities attention in case anyone wanted to tackle making higher resolution textures.

i would really love to do that, but wont the size suffer ? i mean editing textures is quite size fattening. we dont want to end up with like 1GB mod right ? its hard to download. how is it affecting the size zero ?

So far it seems that doubling the texture resolution doubles the size of the file. Fortunately the textures are still compressed so they are still under 1MB in size. For Larry's shirt, it was originally around 350KB and after I doubled the resolution it went to around 700KB. I don't think a higher resolution texture mod would really be that big, considering what you're getting in return.

What files are we talking about here? Are the logos seperate files from the main character textures and how did you double their resolution if it wasn't already provided higher? About how many files are we talking here? This could become an Unofficial Patch feature if only original Troika textures are used...

My question would be, how does it affect things like graphic memory and RAM? Im unfortionetly a little short with this piece of junk (my computer that is) and i have realized that playing with some mods (CQM with all extra installs) have made the game run slower that the fresh install.

that could be very nice, but I'm a little affraid of the impact on performance though. but most textures in the game could definitely use a little "power up".

No, the logos on the shirt were part of the shirt, not seperate graphic files. In order to make the resolution higher I had to find a higher resolution picture of the NBA Logo and the Champion Logo. I then doubled the resolution of the picture then applied the new logos. Saved those changes and put them in the game.

As far as performance is concerned, I only tried this with Fat Larry's skin, nothing else, though I wouldn't imagine the higher resolution textures/skins loading the game down by much if at all., especially with today's computers.

Doing this with Brick walls, mortor, windows, doors, ceilings, floors, rugs, streets, etc... could be REALLY cool if done right. You could esentially remake the entire "look" of the game using high rez textures. A total makeover if you will. (Something I may do after TFN is finished).

Strange! I just checked this out and Fat Larry doesn't have any logos on his shirt in my game and his body texture hasn't got them either. Were you using a texture mod already when you discovered this?

I was going to suggest maybe it was a German version type deal, but the more I think about it, I can't recall having seen those logos before either. I use the Steam version of the game. I wonder if that makes any difference. What are you guys using, Wesp, Zer0?

So sorry for the confusion. The texture used was one someone modded a long time ago for Fat Larry, it's an old texture that I've been using since CE 1.0. Don't worry, you guys aren't going crazy. I just thought it would be a good example of how something like this could be applied to a texture, nothing more. But I'm sure you get the jist on how something like this could be beneficial to the game as a whole.

I think the best places to apply a higher-rez texture would be on walls where there's poster and such, with things written on it. right now, when you're focusing on it (like when you enter in the asylum), it's getting blurred and it looks crappy.

but it's also a fine line with the look and feel of the game, that's so loveable, even after all this time.

I know, right now, performance wouldn't be an issue, but maybe some people continue to play with old PC from the time the game was released, and if texture size are doubled, the game could use up to four time more memory, at least in the graphic card (which needs to store uncompressed textures somewhere before calculating display)

but even so, it would be a nice touch of fresh.

Quick question. What settings should be used saving the dds from Photoshop? I've been trying to change the calendar dates in Warrens 1 and 3, and have extracted the tth and ttz for warr_01_calender and warr_03_calender, but once I edit and convert back to ttz, nothing actually changes in game.
