Icicle's MOON MOD Thread.
« on: October 03, 2017, 04:08:07 am »
Long time no see. This is Icicle again, without acting like a schizophrenic freak - I'm back on the medication and not totally bonkers for once.

I'm starting a new mod. Madness Mod died when my brain went down in flames.

This mod is called MOON MOD. What is it? Anything. It's just going to be weird. I'm not even going to try to thrill you with something intellectual and interesting. It's not gonna be.

Basically, my mod is gonna be for girls and other beings who don't exist with a stick up their bum 24/7. I'll try to make it fun.

INSTEAD OF REPEATING PAST MISTAKES, I'm going to limit my posts to this thread only. So I expect this thread will grow and grow. This will help me avoid making 2424234234 posts about my mod. The only other threads I will create will be about problems I can't solve myself...

Before I can get this going again, I have to figure out what's going on with my GOG install of the game with the latest 9.8 Unofficial Patch:

1. I can't see the mouse cursor at all on the title screen.
2. When I choose Options, the game just exits.

Whatever the mod is going to be, glad to have you back.

As for the install, I only had resolution options so I installed from my original discs.

WoD ST: "We don't allow lollipops, because we are too dark!"

Welcome back. The GOG versions should run fine with the UP 9.8, but maybe you have some weird mouse options turned on? I know that mouse trails should be switched off...

Thanks everyone.

I did manage to fix those two problems, and you were right Wesp, it was mouse trails.

Here's my method for proceeding with the mod:
1. Start game.
2. Play until I encounter something I wanna see changed (happens in 0.2 seconds).
3. Screenshot since I have memory of about 5 seconds.
4. Nagger the game until it becomes what I want.
5. Rinse and repeat.

So with that said, I'll be attacking the title screen first. Since I'm on a laptop without the greatest specs I am going to work within the lower limits of this game. Instead of trying to pack it full of hi-resolution hi-quality content, this time I'm going to work with what I've got. I might do hi-res for some things but in general I think just changing the look and feel is sufficient.

I had a really f***ed up time being homeless for 6 months in a metropolis I didn't even know, then for the last 2 weeks in my home city here. So I'm going to use all this experience in moding the game to give a real "street" experience. The homeless guys in this game just aren't disgusting and mean enough! And there aren't any nasty street ladies either. What can be done to make this game even more deplorably dark and depressing, or at least just deviant and weird, than it was released as! I aim to find out.

Welcome back, Icicle! I'm glad you're medicated once again. I was really impressed with how much you were able to stretch the capabilities of the Bloodlines engine the last time around; I'm really looking forward to seeing what you pull off this time.

If I may ask, I seem remember in the Madness Mod videos you had posted that you managed to get some higher-res symbols floating around in the background of the menu screen. May I ask how?

For example, I believe m_bru.txt lists the particle size as 30, but the associated mm_bru.tga is a 32x32 image file. So I don't know if it just ignores a 1-pixel strip along two sides, or if the size is figured in a different way entirely.

Hi IanW,

As I recall, you have to double the size of the sprites, but not only that, if you want the sprite to work it has to be compatible with the transparency. That means you really have to make sure that every pixel in the outer border of the image (the last rows/columns around the edge of the pic) are all black (RGB 0 0 0). If one pixel is even slightly off, sometimes the game rejects the image for some reason and it won't appear as a particle sprite.

Also you're probably going to want to adjust the .txt file in /particles/ corresponding to the sprite as well as the sprite's generator ("emitter"), too...

I believe that Bloodlines is already dark and depressive with all the watered-down and bleached color palettes. Also, many of the in-game quests/characters mimic or allude to in one way or another to something insane: Gimble (crazy butcher); The Brotherhood of the Ninth circle is pretty much obvious; the grim experiments of Andrei's making and the scenes of vice and debauchery in Hollywood are one of the examples that fall quickly to mind.

What would augment that atmosphere would be in my humble opinion, shadows. A more suitable allocation of lighting in the game as well in interior. The "limiting" of the illumination scope could really add up on the whole melancholic impression.

Introduction of new skins would also bump up the same meter, but I'm a Lovecraftian horror/mystery lover so I prefer less gore and a more psychological approach. I find that Bloodlines does that rather well.

On a side note, scattering around bits of lore through books or computer entries would also deepen the immersion factor that is already considerably high. Into this category, maybe some expanding of already present mail could help: when I hacked the sisters' accounts, I only found three or four messages and this paucity opens up space for hefty additions. Just my opinion though.

Well Raving if this were Madness Mod I think your opinions would be well-suited to the project, but alas I myself am but a shadow of my former self.

I really have less brainpower than before, but more creativity instead.

It's taking me a while just to make the title screen look different, lol. Once I get in the swing of this things should be different.

This time around I want to try to make my own skins for characters rather than downloading everything ever made by everyone for this game, and sifting through them all again.  Might as well spend that effort in making myself more efficient at generating new skins.

Since bumpmaps are not gonna be useful I might go spec maping things, I like the look of shiny leather, and PVC...

My intentions for moding the game are as such:
1. Changing how everything looks by slowly crawling through the game moding it as I go. I'm going to give special attention to clubs again.
2. Music of course. Changing it all, and clubs will, once more, have many tracks instead of just one.
3. Using python to make things more random in general...like spooky noises triggered only in certain spots, but randomly.
4. Maybe messing with the weapons too.
5. Maybe adding more stuff to kill and fight in the streets somehow.

What I don't feel like doing:
a. Trying to change the story or game flow. Zzz. I just don't have the brain cells left right now. Need to grow some more maybe, not sure how.
b. Most of the things I talked about in Madness Mod. But give me time.

What's keeping me going: I am not homeless anymore and have oodles of time and effort to spend on doing this...this is keeping me going, again, lol. I just like projects like this.

What's holding me back: $$$ of course. I literally don't have enough to eat for the entire month and will probably have to visit the homeless shelters to eat in their soup kitchens, lol...and those things are downtown, so it's quite a journey for me.

Fun...

Then I'm looking forward to the results ;)

As far as new skins go, I would really like to see several new thug and prostitute models. Beating up clones of one thug in the warehouse or the Kuei in Chinatown grows insipid with time.
Also, you said that you will drop something new to the clubs... can't wait to see what will happen with Chinatown's Glaze.

Yeah I'm in kind of a "setup" phase so it's moving slowly.

Also I have to pull most of my old tricks out of my memory instead of using my .txt file stash, which is gone. My memory fucking sucks.

I already made this animated logo for the title screen but I fucked up the background and made it solid black instead of transparent so I have to redo it and figure out how I managed it the last time. I think I just made it brightest pink and then made sure it didn't dither it into other pixels so it could be made transparent with a batch command line program or something... zzzzzzzzzzzz \

Yeah I wanna really focus on the streets more than anything. The other places in the game don't interest me as much for the time being. The streets should take a looong time anyway...especially places like the downtown (but that'll be fun because I spent a lot of time in two downtown cores).

I was juggling the idea of making multiple parallel soundtracks that could be switched between via python but I think I'm overextending. The Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS) principle will be what brings this mod to availability in a reasonable amount of time instead of "maybe this will take four years, or until the end of time, I don't know".

I want there to be more gangsters in particular. The gang war happening in the downtown is cool but all the guys look like identical twins. We need some hard pipe-hittin' nigaz with custom tat sleeves spilling they blood for our amusement on deez streets.

Some of what you posted to the forums is still here. I think your guide to editing models is even included with the unofficial patch these days.

Correct. Also I think either the Camarilla Edition or The Final Nights already has switching soundtracks for the clubs, Malkav should know anything about it! Also I recommend that you release your stuff as soon as a section e. g. a hub has been finished so it can be archived here and all your work will not be in vain.

Definitely but actually what is slowing me down is the soundtrack itself. I have a lot of music to sift through to decide what goes where...

I have done the randomized soundtrack thing before in python, that's easy.

I had a much crazier idea in mind but thinking it through killed it. I always get zany ideas that would massively bloat the project size for no good reason other than Cool Factor.

Also I'm being lazy, haven't opened Hammer once yet, tsk tsk. That's the meat and potatoes of all of this. Guess I wanna make a snazzy title screen...

Just to show I'm not just talking crap here's a very early vid of what the title screen looks like so far.

Bear in mind the FPS is terrible because I'm on a laptop now and recording full screen doesn't exactly go all that smooth.

[vimeo]https://vimeo.com/237236798[/vimeo]

Uhh, ok, I can play from Youtube and Vimeo fine but for some reason when I try to play these videos from this embed both fail somehow from BOTH Chrome and Firefox? ..............

.............ok anyway I'll just link it:
