Title: Help needed: using npc models for pc models
Post by: animpinabox on January 17, 2011, 10:22:08 am
Hi,

I recently downloaded the Red Jeanette mod and realised that we can do what I didnt think we can do, and that is using npc models for pc models and changing the materials without affecting the original npc.

The question is:

Once duplicating the npc's material folders,  how exactly do i make it so that armor0, armor1 etc.... wont link to the original npc folder?

That being said, all i really care to do for now is take the red jeanette mod, but change the body and skirt materials for each of the pc model armor folders, but i dont know how to direct it to different versions of the body and skirt ttz files.

I did try opening the .mdl files in notepad. I noticed by scrolling down to the bottom you can see where the textures are directed to. I tried changing: eg. 'jeanette_body' to 'jeanette_body01' as appropriate to the named ttz alteration. However when I loaded in game I got big green text for a missing model where the character should be.

So how exactly is this done?

thanks

Have you looked at /vdata/system/clandoc000.txt? This will allow you to point the player armor skins to different models. That way you could make a duplicate of the Jeanette model, give it a new skin, and then point the character model at that. I think this is what you want , yes?

Doing this in clandoc will only work for a new game, and you can't get rid of the new skin within the running game. But if you can live with these restrictions, it's a lot easier than juggling with model and skin files, and possibly having to edit the skin path of the model in the vpk tools.

I believe he is trying to edit the texture path info in the MDL file. Problem is he is trying to do it using notepad instead of VPKTool. Check out the VTMB Mod developers guide. There is a section in there that walks you through the process.

You need the VPKTool.exe, It has a model tab, you open the model and it lets you change the path that it looks for the material in. You save it, and thats it....yay...  :vampwink:
