Exchanging PC Armor appearance / skin
« on: September 19, 2019, 08:37:09 pm »
Hello,
this is my first post, so I'm quite a newbie to modding.
I downloaded a mod (only textures/tth, ttz, vmt files) for the ventrue female appearance armor0, which I'd like to use as armor1.
As armor0 the mod works fine as it should be, I tested it.

Since the mod came without a mdl file, I thought it would use the vanilla one "ventrue_female_armor_1.mdl", which I therefore extracted with the VPK Tool. I edited the mdl file to link it to the new textures (texture search path "models/character/pc/female/ventrue/armor1/", texture name for body adjusted), which I put in the Vampire/materials/models/character/pc/female/ventrue/armor1 folder. Oh, and ofcourse i renamed the edited model file to [...]armor_1.mdl
Edit: I missed to edit the .vmt file. Iv edited it now (set the base texture path) but still my player model is invisible ingame.

But apparently I'm missing something, because now when I wear the armor1 ingame, the player model just becomes invisible.
Can you help me and say me what I'm doing wrong here? Any help appreciated! Thanks.

Don't touch the mdl file. Just go to materials/models/character/pc/female/ventrue/armor1 folder, convert the ttz file to tga for example a work on it, when you finish the work, convert another time to ttz.

Or perhaps the problem is that you placed the texture in vampire... instead of the mod that you're using like /Unofficial_Patch...

Don't change the name of the texture files, just the path. The model is still looking for armor0 files. At lest the vmt must stay armor0 and call the correct tth, ttz.

@argikt: Since he (she?) wants to use the vanilla skin for armor 0 if I'm not mistaken, the texture path in the model file for armor 1 has to be edited.

Yes, he/she can do it, but is easy (unleast for me) to backup the original finles and rename the new ones as the originals.

It's a he ;)
Yes, I want to keep the vanilla armor0 skin and use the downloaded armor0 mod as armor1. Therfore I have to edit the extracted armor0 mdl (and rename it to armor1) right?

What irritates me is that the player model totally disappears instead of just showing the missing-texture-pattern (the pink one). So I guess, it's not the texture location/name that's wrong but something more profound.

But can you confirm that the general idea is right?
1. extracting armor0 mdl file from vanilla game
2. rename it to armor1 and putting it in appropriate location
3. edit the texture location & name inside this mdl file
4. edit vmt file of the textures
5. putting the textures in armor1 location & renaming them properly

On and yes, I've taken the mod folder into account (using mod folder instead of vampire)

Basically yes.
For step 2: Check in clandoc that the model name and path match the one given there.
steps 3 to 5: only change texture paths, leave the filenames alone.

In addition, if the mod makes changes to the face or hair, you probably want to use only one head texture for both armors. In that case put the head textures you want to use in the armor0 directory and do not edit the vmt in the armor1 directory.

Thanks for the help. Oddly it still won't work. Maybe I have to double check (haha, more like 100th times check) the texture & model locations by putting them all together in a txt file on below the other to notice my error...

Send me your custom textures, I will try to do it.

Thanks, that would be great!

UPDATE:
So the problem is apparently that the model I want to use is referring to different bones (skirt instead of pants) and changing these parameters is a lot of work... Just in case, someone still wonders or is having the same problem...

Thanks for the help and advises, folks!
