Bloodlines Resurgence Multiplayer
« on: November 29, 2013, 10:22:39 pm »

Introduction:
Bloodlines Resurgence Multiplayer is part of the Bloodlines Resurgence mod, being on the Alien Swarm engine, which pits players against each other in the ultimate team-based battle of Kindred versus Kine. Players choose which side to ally themselves with and which powers and weapons to take into battle. You will have various objectives that you need to accomplish while the other team tries to reach their own goals. All while you battle along the streets of L.A. Each multiplayer map blends intense combat action and strategy with maps that are linked together to create an unfolding storyline.

Features:
- Round based game mode
- All ranged weapons (for now)
- Character selection
- Play between Camarilla and the Society of Leopold
- Some variety of maps to play on

Why multiplayer? Why not single-player?
Having a multiplayer version of the game released instead of the single-player part is the perfect way to playtest and experiment on various game mechanisms, while putting on focus features such as weapons, character customization, player animations, Disciplines, feeding and so on.
Because the single player is still far from its core point, it makes more sense having a version of the game that can bring to focus important feedback from gameplay experience while experimenting and tweaking various aspects that can prove useful for both multiplayer and single-player.
The reason why it's called an alpha is because its missing various of the key elements that makes Bloodlines what it is. Features such as feeding and Disciplines. Once they are fully implemented it will move up from the point of being called an alpha.

Character Customization
Character customization will be done in two ways to provide further choices.
Each Clan model will have a selection of torso and lower body that they can select from. Each outfit will support color tinting on various areas to provide further alterations between the rest of the players.
Since Source has the ability to attach models to another, which unlocks more possibility on adding and attaching body parts to the player model, depending on its bones. These models can be from hats, glasses to backpacks and boot add-ons.
For now the first release will not come with character customization, other than the basic outfit and gender selection for the Camarilla clans. Once all models are reworked to have their body parts interchangeable along with tinting support, it will get included in future releases.

What to expect from the first alpha version
First of all, all Camarilla clans will be included along with their gender selection and their default outfit. All ranged weapons are included, except for the flamethrower. Melee is currently missing due to missing first person view models that are being currently worked on.
Each Clan will get a primary and secondary weapon, and a melee one once it's done. Disciplines won't be included until future releases. Two teams will be included, the Camarilla and Society of Leopold (Vampire Hunters). The Sabbat team will also be included in a later release.

Features to be implemented:
- Fully customizable characters
- Melee weapons
- Objective based dynamic game modes
- The Sabbath
- Lock picking
- Feeding / Blood pool
- Skill points

I've never been interested in MP games, but I like what you're doing and that eventually a singleplayer part will come. What does Automatic Suicide on Change mean? It's in the second picture with orange text. It makes me think of a particular scene in Monty Python's Holy Grail ("What is your favorite color?" "Blue... no, yellooooow!"), so unless you tell me otherwise, that is what I'll think. Since I don't play MP games, I won't find it out by myself later on.

It's used to whether change the clan when selecting a new clan(killing the player) or change it after the next respawn.

And now, for what you have waited for, I present you the first early release of the multiplayer build. Since I'm still not very happy about some of the issues, it's best to have an unofficial public release for early play testing and feedback.

You will need both Alien Swarm installed and any version of the original Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines in order to install the mod. Make sure you have a fresh copy of the game else it can cause various problems with running the mod.

Some things you need to take into consideration since it's still in early ages. Please note that some affect both single player and multiplayer progress within the project.
- Several gun aiming and player animations are being offset.
- Disciplines are still not implemented.
- Melees are not implemented, due to first/third person animations.
- Odd crouch animation / ladder animation.

On a note, most issues come from the player animations as you already noticed by now due to the changes implemented since the Source 2007 engine that are not fully compatible with the old format. Only succeeded getting some of the weapon animations to work properly, which is part of the reason of considering it more of a preview alpha.

And finally, the download link some of you might have been waiting for.
If there are any issues within installing the mod please don't hesitate pointing them out. Happy playtesting!

Actually I noticed a small hickup. Sorry about that, just try to move everything from the VampireMP subfolder (located in Sourcemods/VampireMP/VampireMP) which is located within the mod folder to the root folder and let it replace all files.

Alien Swarm is the base engine we use for the mod to run, which is an updated version of Source, very much like the Source SDK Base 2007/2013 for any other mods.

In the meantime I'll update the fixed version, but for those who already downloaded it, just move everything from the VampireMP subfolder located in Sourcemods/VampireMP to the current main folder and comfirm to replace all files. Sorry for the hickups, fellows.

Well I got it to work on my end. Just a quick reminder for those trying to installed:

Things Needed

-Steam
-Alien Swarm [on Steam - it's free so just search for it on Steam's Store]
-VTMB [Any Version]

After install the game will appear on the Steam Game Library list as Bloodlines Resurgence: Multiplayer Alpha.

I ran a few tests so far and here's what I have to say:

-Game crashes after trying to leave a map. AlienSwarm.exe has stopped responding... this happens a lot.
-There were missing materials for the water surrounding the Elizabeth Dane level, but that was resolved.
-Female Gangrel submachine gun has incorrect flash offsets.
-Armor choices on the character creation screen don't seem to work nor does the color options.
-No crouch or sprint options? Only jump?
-Can't switch between primary and secondary weapons?
-Call For Vote menu option appears to do nothing.

Some practical feature requests:

-Please add a Done button on the character creation screen and have that be the only way to enter a game.
-Either include a preset loadout screen for each character letting us know what weapons they use or allow us to choose their equipment.
-When you activate the bomb on the Elizabeth Dane, please add a timer... followed by a cool looking explosion... make it so. :D

There's a lot of potential here for development. You, in essence, have built an environment that can be used to experiment with a number of game play options. I know people are wanting a working SP game, but we have something that the community can get behind - a working template. A template that can eventually be used to build a better SP experience in the future. What has been done so far leaves a lot of room to experiment and play around with. From building up stats, experience, disciplines, and inventory structures to having working quests and dialog. But think baby steps. There's a lot of mechanics missing in Bloodlines Resurgence so I don't see an SP game coming out soon. My initial thoughts of thinking in baby steps would be:

-Add combat rules fitting to wod in the background between vampires and humans. Factor in soak and damage types. Possibly experiment with altering the weapons already done so far to include new damage types if only for testing purposes.
-Get melee working.
-Add items and inventory to store them... even if it starts out as a simple named list. For example... you could even require the player to find the explosives to plant on the Elizabeth Dane. Then they have to use the item.
-Add a java API so I don't have to learn a new language just to help you. :P

Anyway. Good Job. You got my attention. I'll be keeping an eye out on this project more closely in the future.

First of all thank you for your feedback on the behalf of the multiplayer.

- Those crashes seem to be caused from some player models, but I have only experienced them rarely, hopefully it's going to be fixed as soon as possible.
- The missing water materials were caused of Alien Swarm not shipping with the regular water textures, which was included in the latest build.
- The muzzleflash issues are known for not showing up correctly in third person and it's being looked upon.
- They do not reflect the changes since the model panel because the current model panel doesn't support model swapping or tinting just yet.
- You will need to reset the keyboard binding for them to work.
- Again those need to be rebind. Running exec playtest.cfg should fix it if resetting the keys doesn't work. It's a known issue with Alien Swarm and Steam Cloud syncing.
- It's a left over feature from Alien Swarm that I am yet to implement.

The character creation menu will be changed in future updates to reflect the original way of choosing like in VtMB instead of clicking the Clan icons for close the dialog.
These feature will include swapping body parts (torso and legs for now) and loadouts that show you which weapons you'll be spawn with along with a Done button to accept the new changes and close the dialog.

I will have to agree, the main mechanism that are missing from multiplayer are also missing from singleplayer, such as several player animation, feeding and many other features that are done but not included in the current release just because of the player animations itself.
By the mean time the single player is still on being developed but focusing on the multiplayer to experiment with character customization, player animations and weapons is the first step to take.

- The combat system and the melee are the biggest priorities right now, without them there's really no point going further.
- I've been experimenting with some inventory like system but it still needs some polishing. Once it's done it will be included in a future update to experiment with. Along with loadout selection and such.
- A web service to parse the inventory wouldn't be a bad idea to experiment with the item data and skill points.
- And as for the Discipline system, I would still require some insight on how they work from all areas.

Once again, thank you for this lovely review, it's always great to see some appreciation for any steps taken, especially being mostly what it a one man's work, it can take time. There's a lot of work, but once the main issues are solved, the rest are less problematic.
