Title: Re: Bloodlines (kinda) - The Graphic Novel (in a manner of speaking, anyway)
Post by: [archive] Year_of_the_Scarab on March 18, 2007, 01:05:00 pm
Taking my mouth a little full here. See this is something I did for a local fan-project, which I'm not going to talk about for a whole number of reasons, but I thought I'd share with you guys and see what you think. I'm just posting the first seven pages for now.

Now, this is a draft, so don't expect too much. If it gets accepted by the project team I'll be redrawing a lot of this from scratch I think, as it's my vision, not theirs. There's a chance it'll be inked and possibly colored (not by me though) and I'm almost certain there'll be a rotation in char roles. So there.

Also, this is fairly graphic (well, this part anyway), so go read something else if you're offended by "bad" language or sex (good luck being a Mormon, by the way), since I'm actually showing what the game didn't in the intro. I think I was being smart here, but maybe I was being tacky, whatever. But, we all know what was going on, so c'mon.

 With all that being said:

 Page Uno

 Page Due

 Page Tre

 Page Quattro

 Page Cinque

 Page Sei

 Page Sette

For the stunning continuation, crazed Malks, ominous prophecies and even more naked Torrie catch us next week! grin

 peace

The handcuffs are a nice touch.  Trashy as hell, but it works well in this story.  Were they always there (in the intro cutscene) or did you add them?  I'd check the scene myself, but...I can't. sad

Hell, I wouldn't throw punches at a bunch of Kindred while I'm fully dressed and in bloody military grade bodyarmor, so yeah, I see what you mean. She has no fear, and there sort of is a reason for that.

A note on this perhaps - the premise (I've always felt) is that the player character's sire was a powerful Lick, judging by the hell incarnate your character becomes.

On the one hand, I want to say something about this comic, on the other hand I know it would probably be just mindless praise, so why should I bother?

In any case, yeah, cool, well done. Glad to see that the Toreador female is (or at least, appears to be) the main character. Mostly because she's my second favourite PC after the Gangrel female.

I am, however, interested in seeing whether or not you include the "meeting" at the start of the game. The subject of said meeting has just disappeared after all. But since that meeting showed most of the major NPCs and some of their interactions, it'd be a shame to lose that scene. In my opinion.

Beside Michael Whydoesn'tthiscrapfitonthispage Jr.? No, not really. I'd love to be able to say I choose one from an arsenal of different styles (based on various artists) depending on what I'm doing, but that'd be bullshit.

And don't get me started on layout. The individual frames are actually separate sheets for the most part. Though sometimes I do myself one up and draw several on one (though not in the right order, of course), then there's the cutting, pasting, cursing, erasing the wrong part, more cursing, etc etc. I do the same thing with regular drawings - start in the lower left corner and then try and figure out what impossible position that character must be in to fit on the page.

That being said I'm a huge fan of John Romita's early work, beside icons like Jim Lee or Macfarlarne (his Spidey is the Only True Version (TM) far as I'm concerned). Don't know if you've seen Nguyen's work, but that's probably how I'd like to be able to draw some day. Mignola! Ah. But even mentioning those guys' work makes me want to hide my pencils and find another hobby.

 And... well, stuff.

Yeah, I agree about the scene, but as you said - there's no reason for that meeting now... I could easily make up another one, but the whole point is to try and follow the original storyline (apart from the obvious, obviously).

Really cool work and makes me wonder why more people don't do stuff like this, like Red VS Blue or that really short lived one for ultima 7.  I started off being a little unsure about it starting the same as the game, but you seem to be doing your own thing with it so I'm going to make sure to come back and check on it.

The fight was cool, I hope you find a way to transition the blur effects should you ink it, I always fear they don't meld the same as with pencil.  It was well paced, though the whole thing seems to go faster than 29 pages might indicate.  The sex for instance goes on longer than you'd see in most comics, but I'm certainly not going to complain.  This is the net and A. you should be able to pace things to your liking, B. I imagine it'll be a footnote to the possible violence to come, and C. because let's face it, you can't have too much happy slappin.

The art is good as usual, your smoky shading style gives it a weird atmosphere, like the smog of California is seeping through the walls.  In the two vampire pieces I did I blasted the contrast and texture pretty harshly so I keep wanting to hit the contrast slider, but that's purely me :P, the haze here gives the impression that everyone is living in the shadows.  And that's probably more proper.  I mean, you said you were going to ink it and all, but I kind of like this.

Meh, you probably don't need a tired critique, good work.  Sleep well, get more pages up soon.

Yes. From what I heard, LA attempted to post something really cool up and a forum bug caused the post to be denied, causing all the typing work he did to be lost. This had happened to him on several occations and eventually led to giving up on this buggy forum.

I've seen him pop up on the Elysium that Valoris setup awhile back. Link here:

Why do people insist on saying Graphic Novel instead of a comic? to overcome a bias?

Comic always reminds people of stories meant for children.

Graphic Novel makes them sound like they have an actual depth to them (which quite a few do if done right) And are usually more teen\adult orientated.

Basically. Comics also tend to have a water-color like appearance, while graphic novels are darker and/or more stylish.

Yo, Lancea here. Seems forumplanet ate my account, so it seems things are still screwy.

Anyway, request - don't suppose anyone has Bloodines installed at the moment and could tell me the date on the asian dude's computer? I think that's the only instance during the whole story where there's a concrete date provided.

 Much obliged in advance.

Good to see you again, La.  I'll get right on the dates on the notebook in Foxy Boxes.  Also, the photo of Lily is dated August 2003.

 EDIT:
 Here, hope this helps.

Ah, just what I was looking for. Thanks, that does help. If I recall right, the last 2 entries concern the PC, while the first 3 gloat over how easy Santa Monica is to overtake. So, by deduction, the PC wasn't embraced until sometime around the 20th.

 Awright. Thanks again.

ps. blood heal, eh? Wesp's been busy, I take it XD

Wasn't the game released in the US on October 18th, 2004?

Hm, you suggesting Troika adjusted the dates so that the game would be released on the day of the PC's embrace? Sounds rather cool, but all things considered I doubt it. Doesn't seem very likely for Troika to be on top of things like that.

Anyway. The 18th works for me too, as long as the Dane wasn't discovered crew-less before the 20th.

That should be called "Bloodlines, the game that almost wasn't." If that happened you wouldn't have gotten embraced at all. That actually is a very damn good way to avoid a Masquerade breach cleanly and humanely. They stopped her from embracing without permission, they erased his memory too and it will work since the period of time he saw everything was a few minutes. Was the Ventrue the Prince or a random Ventrue?
