I was wondering...

I know VTM:B uses an older version of Source engine. I also know some bugs Bloodlines 1 has cannot be fixed and many of the common Source engine features such as self-shadowing bump maps, HDR and whatnot cannot be implemented because we don't have the source code for this version of the Source engine.

What I was wondering is, could we not request the Source code from Valve? (At least assuming they still have a backup somewhere. It is their engine after all, no matter how modified it is.)

To me, it sounds like this would fix a lot of the issues if it is at all possible.

I am not saying we should do a petition or something, I am genuinely wondering.

You must be joking! Valve with their stupid "HL2 must be released first" policy was the reason that Troika went out of business in the first place. They still Bloodlines version on Steam in a state that won't work without my patch and don't care! I bet they never even got the Bloodlines source code...

I don't understand what got you so upset. I hope it isn't something I said. I am only asking because I don't fully understand.

I understand what Valve did was horrible, I am not defending them in any way and I fully agree with you. But there is a slight possibility they might still have the source code. Even if they don't have the Source engine code with all the Troika modifications in place, they might have the raw version they gave to Troika, which might still be helpful in some areas.

I am not saying they would help us even if they still have the code, I was just wondering about this and I thought you guys would be the best people to ask.

There have been requests in the past for the source code and the answer was no.  Valve has not behaved well in the past so, it is a sore spot.
