It is a resource hog.  Make sure to update your video card drivers (nVidia I find work the best).  This game will bind you to it and make you a slave like many of us here (no complaining from my end).  Be sure to get at LEAST the official patch.  There are others.  I've heard the suggestion to play it with just the official patch and then play it with other patches so you can see how it was and how the players have developed it.  I would also suggest playing any other class first then playing a Malkavian.  The jokes are funnier if you remember a bit of the original dialog plus some jokes and the special insight Malks have make it worth playing through as another clan first.

This is one of the best Vampire games out there, and you won't be disappointed. Every character is memorable, even the minor ones and it probably has the best (and wittiest) writing I have ever seen in a game. The combat system is kind of meh, but I personally think that exciting combat isn't really the drawing point of a good RPG when you compare them to real action games that do nothing but. Not to say that it's terrible, but if you're just looking for a solid FPS you'd probably want Half-Life or something. The vampire powers and certain weapons are very satisfying though, and I defy you to show me one other game where you can boil the blood of your enemies until they explode, swing around a severed arm like a baseball bat, force crowds of people to vomit blood or mind control a woman into thinking you're a giant turtle. The game has many great moments, but you have to be forgiving of it's bugs. The publisher forced the developer to release the game before it was really finished, so sometimes it's not very stable, but mostly it's minor glitches. A lot of these are fixed with Wesp's Unofficial Patch, but even at version 5.1 it has it's problems. Use his basic patch if you want an experience that's close to the original game, or the Plus version if you want extra content and gameplay balances. Even buggy as it is, it's a good trade off. If you you're a vampire fan you owe it to yourself to play this.

And I agree with sexydeth, Malkavians are best saved for a second run, when you might actually understand what their saying or get the meaning behind their clairvoyant riddles.

I just wanted to add a slight remark. This game seems to invoke love or hate. Some people, most of whom are lurking, hiding, squatting here, seem to be devoted to the game(except for Offkorn who just confessed that he hates the game).  Well they ought to be, not?
This game is, as far as i know, one of the best vampire games around. I liked the overal mood especially in the non-combat area's. They really tried to capture the idea of you being a vampire and you need to blend in with human society. Also some episodes are certainly great, like ocean house hotel or when you meet someone who recognizes from before being undead live. ( i hope am not spoiling anything).
Yet as slim says, it hasn't the greatest of combat system. It is fun, but if you expect some 'weapon combo's' or first person shooter thing, then don't get your hopes up to high.
This game is best appreciated if you can live with some bugs, some bad moments and have a lively fantasy to fill in some of the missing things.

But what the heck, if you are devoted to vampires you must play this game regardless of what I say.
You greatest problem is to choose between those nice add-ons some have created. Play as vanilla brujah or download that great looking brujah skin!!

                vote yes it rocks

I am thoroughly enjoying my first playthrough

I really haven't had any of the problems that alot of other people complain about.  No Society of Leopold bug, no crash at start up, etc

It really could have used alot more polish when it was released, but all in all its a very solid RPG/FPS hybrid in my eyes.

The only other one besides a Masquerade game that comes to mind is the Castlevania series. Legacy of Kain had a fantastic story and excellent art direction, but they were terrible games. The game itself, particularly in Soul Reaver 2, felt like more of an unnecessary vehicle to fill time between story scenes. Honestly I think it would have been better off as a computer animated mini-series on HBO or something. Other than that I can't really think of any vampire games that had many redeeming qualities. The soon to be released Vampyre Story looks promising, if your into point and click adventure games and it's hardly the same kind of experience as Bloodlines. I can't think of any other game that takes modern vampire myth as seriously as Bloodlines or Redemption do.

Just? Maybe to you, but I made my feelings quite known back in Dec 04'.

It's kind-of hard to like a game that you just spent $50 preordering, when a playthrough barely lasts 8 hours and the difficulty level cannot be altered away from "laughably easy".

If you're a fan of 8-10 hour FPS', then yes, you'll probably like this game. If you're a fan of 20+ hour RPGs, you probably won't.

I played one of the first ones (probably THE first ) released on Game Boy when I was at the store and they had the original Game Boy displays. I wasn’t all that impressed.

Yes, and yes. Each vampire looked pretty darn cool and had its own monstrous appearance, as well as unique abilities and in some cases, good personalities. The story was sweet and could keep you playing. However, after finishing them once, I find it hard to make it all the way through the game again. Once I knew the plot, the game itself just became a chore/obstacle to get through just to see more plot.

Hmm, yeah, looks like I just wasted a couple of sentences, because that’s exactly what I was saying, too. There are several games that do this. God of Wars games come dangerously close to this, but the puzzle-like boss-fights and only slightly annoying puzzles (as opposed to the Legacy of Kain’s constant barrage of HELL and 100%-repetitive combat) keep it from matching the LoK level of crappy gameplay.

Heh…for some odd reason, I keep thinking of Reboot, probably because of Raziel’s blue-hued skin…some sort of Bob connection to Reboot, maybe. I found out there was a season of that released within the past few years, so I stayed up like an entire night watching it. It’s silly and tongue-in-cheek, but I love that show. I freaked out when I thought Enzo was going to die back at the beginning of like Season 3 or whatever. I know some of you guys know what I’m talking about, even though NO ONE that I know in real life knows what Reboot is. I agree, though. It would make a kickass CGI show, though. I’d watch it religiously.

Bloodrayne 1 had a fun sense of empowerment in that you could cut Nazis to ribbons left and right. It was a freaking blast. However, the bosses were generally extremely hard and/or ridiculously straightforward (chop the crap out of them without dodging anything and keep your powers active). It ruined it. Also, the lack of locations and rare plot updates didn’t do it much good.

Bloodrayne 2 had great locations, much better combat and power usage, better controls, great graphics, and more! However, the game’s difficulty at almost all times was generally worse than all but the last few fights in the original game. It is so hard that I actually quit playing after only a couple of hours a few months ago. It’s just not worth it. I play a game to have fun; not be miserable, and Bloodrayne 2 makes me a miserable son of a bitch.

Is that the one that looks kinda whimsical and humorous where there are two dumb vampire-hunters and a vampire girl who doesn’t know what she is or something like that and she wants to leave the castle? If so, it’s got my interest.

That’s me! Of course, I’m not so stereotypical that I’ll like any game that meets those qualifications. I think F.E.A.R. sucked a big, fat one.

It only takes you 8 hours? What do you skip all the side quests? I'm not sure how long it takes me exactly, but I do everything, read everything and ask every NPC every question whenever I play it and I know all that takes me longer than 8 hours and I don't do much reloading and half the time I use noclip to speed through the boring "walking through hubs to get from one place to another" to save time.

Also, if you have hated this game for years, then what are you doing here? I hate Oblivion, and I will attack it with gusto whenever it comes up on an internet forum, but I wouldn't join a forum devoted to it. I understand you like VTM, but then why spend time in the Bloodlines sections, make and help with mods, and you seem to know a lot about the inner workings of the game. Offkorn, are you a masochist? Sorry, just trying to figure out why you keep spend so much time on a game you've hated for three and a half years.

 @Dark666Prophet
I must say I'm flattered you took the time to dissect my post so thoroughly. I'd forgotten about Bloodrayne, but then I never really played it outside the demo. Castlevania I played back in the day, and I thought 1 and 3 were OK but the fourth one on Super Nintendo is still my favorite (not Dracula X, though). I never played the new ones with the oh-so-cleverly named Alucard, so supposedly they are the best in the series.
