Thanks for the advice on which ones to avoid. :)

Ok, so I looked up Jyhad and it appears to be told through a first person POV, which is great but what is the difference between the Standard Color edition and the Premium Color edition?

The website I found it on, drivethruRPG, doesn't say. I read a short review and the guy said some of the text here and there was hard to read because of off color backgrounds beneath the text, but sadly, he neglected to mention which version he read(PDF, Standard, or Premium).

I'm a simple man so black text on a white background is what want. I assume that would be Standard, correct?

I think I will get some of the clan books btw, I found a Nosferatu clan book on Amazon for $3.50. I think they have others but that was like 10 mins ago and herbal supplements have killed my short term memory....

Edit: Read a couple longer, more detailed reviews. I think I'll go with Premium Color, now that I know more about the book in general.

I just ordered the STandard edition. WHat is the difference between premium and standard? I haven't found anything

It's weird how there is seemly zero info about the difference between Standard and Premium right?

I never did actually place my order for the Premium, which a was good thing because I found out later the motor for my windshield wipers on my truck is dead. I googled the average price for a repair job and got $350 minimum(!) Then I looked up the actual price for the part itself and got less than $50, so I'm definitely doing this job solo. (There are a bunch of vids on YouTube, doesn't look hard really, just F'n annoying.)

So yeah, I'll probably just get the Standard myself once I get all that sorted.

I'm sorry about your truck, I hope, you will be able to fix this.

But yeah, I'm quite excited about the book. I think, it might be a bit longer until I get it, since they have to deliver to Germany from the US, but hopefully, I will get it in a week or two :)

Me too. Diving without windshield wipers while it's raining is rather terrifying!

Kool. Waiting an extra week isn't so bad, though. I got Diablo 2 when it first came out, then I ended up selling it to a friend because I didn't like certain 'features'(respawning enemies in Singleplayer). Then one day a couple years ago, I figured I'd give it another go. So I looked it up on Amazon and found a seller in Romania(when I seen what country he was from I knew I had to get it from him). It took over 2 months to arrive and less than 2 hours before I remembered why I didn't like it, lol.

Also, really dig your avatar. :) It's a crime there wasn't a second season.

It's from a tv/web series?

Yeah that's Kaylee from the TV show Firefly. 'Shiny' is a sorta slang the characters use for say, 'kool' or 'awesome' or 'great'.

It has a great 'western in space with a dash of Chinese' theme that is done very well.

fylimar's avatar is taken from the first episode(which didn't originally air, btw), judging by the parasol(or whatever) Kaylee has propped on her shoulder. In it the rag-tag smugglers aboard the ship Firefly take on a group of passengers to earn a bit of extra cash on the way to their next job. Of course, one of the passengers has a secret which leads to all kinds of high jinks later on.

The Chinese angle in the show is interesting; there is a sense that the Chinese culture is basically universal in Firefly; every one curses in Chinese and sometimes speak whole sentences - without subtitles - there are asian extras everywhere any time they go to a populated city, they eat traditional chinese food, there is generally asian art in the background in more fancy places, etc. The best thing is none of this is ever directly told to the viewer. It's just there for those who notice.

Sadly, the fact that characters randomly start speaking in Chinese without subtitles is one of the reasons it got canned.

It was produced by Fox around 2001, I think, and was supposed to have 16 episodes in the first season. It got cancelled after 14. Actually, it was technically cancelled a few episodes prior but the order they aired wasn't the order they where filmed - or something like that. I have the DVDs and they talk about it on the commentary, but it's been over a year since I last watched it with the commentary on.

They eventually came out with a movie called Serenity around '05 that tied things up, but personally, I kinda hate the first 20 mins of it because they have to re-introduce the characters to an audience that may not have ever heard of the show, and the initial motivation at the start of the crew's latest adventure, which I don't wanna mention as you haven't seen it, is a plotline that's already been resolved in the show.(Edit: This is even more apparent if you watch the final episode then immediately jump straight into the movie IMO. Admittedly, it's a bit crazier this time, but still... They spent half the F'n show debating this issue!)

Edit 2: Actually, I just looked it up and The Message (the one where the crew found out the show was cancelled) is listed as ep. 14 and Objects in Space(my favorite episode and the one I thought was ep. 14) is listed as ep. 10.

I'm pretty sure Objects in Space is ep. 14 though on the DVD.... Dammit now I gotta dig through the closet!

Edit 3: Ok, not going crazy, Objects in Space is the last episode on the DVD. That crap online must be a fan reordering or something. The Message is easily the weakest episode, though I get why some fans would watch it last(The crew found out the show was ending, there's a funeral at the end with sappy music, etc.)

If you watch Objects in Space last you get a much better ending to the show plus a nice segway into the opening themes of the movie(River is both smart and crazy, plus badass and deadly when her friends are in danger, but ultimately a good girl.)

Plus Objects in Space has one of my favorite lines:

Simon: 'Are you Alliance?'

Early: 'Am I a lion?'

Simon: 'What?'

Early: 'I don't think of myself as a lion. You might as well though, I have a mighty roar.'

While I can understand that people loved "Firefly" because of the characters, I found the way they tried to combine scifi and western failed big time when compared to e.g. Han Solo from Star Wars! Also the movie showed that the basic story behind everthing was nothing more than the usual evil-corporation/government-created-zombies, which is really old compared to e.g. the great story from Babylon 5. And don't get me started on how they killed off a main character in the movie, just to make sure that the show will never be continued!

Belated Edit:
Spoiler Warning! - The following post may contain a spoiler or two regarding the TV show Firefly it's follow up movie Serenity.

...I found the way they tried to combine scifi and western failed big time...

what?

...when compared to e.g. Han Solo from Star Wars!...

What??

....which is really old compared to e.g. the great story from Babylon 5....

WHAT???

...And don't get me started on how they killed off a main character in the movie, just to make sure that the show will never be continued!

BLASPHEMY!!!

:P

I never watched Babylon 5 back when it first aired. I mean I'd tune in for 5-10 mins here and there but I never actually watched a whole episode. But that was so long ago I don't remember anything about it really. Kevin Sorbo is the main guy right? I always heard it was a really good show.

Also, about killing off the characters.... I'm not really that invested in the show so I've never followed all the post-show interviews, etc., so what I'm about to say may be wrong.... But I saw a special once where the cast sat down and talked about the show and movie and I'm pretty sure Joss Whedon outright said, or least hinted that everyone who died in the movie would have died eventually in the show, had it continued.

I mean it's common knowledge now that a certain lady had a terminal illness and would've died off at some point in a later season(I believe this was first mentioned in that special I'm referring to), so main characters getting knocked off was supposed to happen eventually.

I like the way the movie ended btw, with River and Mal on the bridge. And Mal begins to teach River about how to fly the ship, and of course she already knows what he's gonna say, :)

I see this as where the show would have ended up had it continued - with River piloting the ship.

There's actually a big hint to this, I think,  in the last ep. Objects in Space when River tells Early:

"I'm not on the ship. I'm in the ship. I am the ship."

Which, of course, has a specific meaning within the context of the episode itself, but could also be taken as a hint to River's future role as the ship's pilot as well.

what?

You heard me. They have spaceships but no stasis chambers or similar to transport living animals?

What??

They still use old fashioned revolvers? We have better guns now and Han Solo had a blaster :)!

WHAT???

Exactly. Firefly was only about zombies and evil experiments, we had this dozend times already like e.g. in Resident Evil. I won't spoil Babylon 5 for you, but its story is the most consistent and amazing in any TV show ever!

BLASPHEMY!!!

Yeah, like what should be the most hardened part of a space ship? The cockpit window of course, so that death made no sense. I have nothing against main characters dying, but this was a joke!

That is Andromeda, which can't hold a candle to Babylon 5 at all :)!

As for the technology, in the greater world of Firefly, advanced tech did exist; there is a prominent stasis 'chamber' in the first episode(What's in the box?! - As Brad Pitt would say...) - it's just the 'Firefly' is an old ship that doesn't have that technology.

As for Lazer guns, they do exist within the show(a later episode has them stealing one of the first manufactured, protected by high security, suggesting they've been around a long time if the original model is so rare), and I've always assumed the main crew's weapons, although they look old fashioned, didn't rely on gun power(they have a more pew, pew sound).

I guess I like the low tech feel of the show. Shoot outs on horseback, old-fashion bank robberies, that's kool to see on a sci-fi show.

As for the reavers, I don't mind their 'big government's good intentions gone wrong' creation story(It's basically the same as the cylon origin in Battlestar, minus the cover-up). But I guess you're right - it's very similar to the 'unethical experiments lead to zombies' in other fiction.(but in RE umbrella was trying to make messed up crap, in Firefly, the Alliance did it by accident, then covered it up/ignored it.)

I do, however, think they've much more interesting than simple zombies; they fly ships, have a fleet, use weapons, etc. The only thing I don't like is the fact that you don't actually learn much about them, or really see to many until you get to the movie - then suddenly they're the main focus. Which happened, presumably, because the show got cancelled too early.

As for the weak spot in cockpit, you're right on the money there. That made no sense for him to go out like that(he could've died in the firefight or something) Edit: Y'know this was actually something I never noticed until years later, when I saw someone mention it online, hah.

As for the Kevin Sorbo mix up - well I guess I guess there's TWO sci-fi shows I haven't seen then. :) I really do have to look into Babylon 5 now. I've always heard it was good but, tbh, part of the reason I haven't watched it before was because I thought Sorbo was in it, lol.

My favorite sci-fi show is Battlestar Galactica (newer series). Really really like Battlestar, like alot....

Number two is... Farscape, lol. It's all cheese, but it's great. Actually the first sci-fi show I ever really got into. Haven't seen it in years though.... It's kinda stupid actually....

I didn't like it. To me it was too much forced to bring western and scifi together. Like having cattle shit into a space ship! Not natural...

You should really watch B5, but remember that the story connects the first four seasons and if you miss stuff, you might wonder what happens. The fifth season is a huge drop in quality because the story basically is over and they just improvised some more, but badly! As for Sorbo and Andromeda, the guy who was behind DS9, which itself started off as a bad copy of B5, wanted to tell a similar story there, but got fired mid-show and after that it never went anywhere...

Quote

Uh, maybe our taste is really different, because I didn't like that at all. I'm old enough to know the original and just turning characters first into women because SJW and then into cylons because what the hell? Also with those stupid WLAN vipers and the president being sick and cute kids it combined every bad scifi cliche, topped only by a cylon betraying herself while having sex. So I stopped after the mini-series and I'm glad about that because I read that they didn't really have a plan and everything fell apart in the end. The same as with Games of Thrones lately. The great thing about B5 is that the end was planned!

I really liked it at the beginning. Finally some aliens that were really alien! But it went downhill fast once the main guy had visions of the main villain always talking to him which really sucked...

Combining movie setting genres difficultly gives good results. As an example, look at this failure of comic book:

In the wake of the success of the outstanding comic book saga of Annihilation (no relations to that movie)  a couple of the minor writers took the reins and continued the saga. In this mediocre sequel, called Annihilation: Conquest, they wanted to introduce a new character. This character was a:
- space traveller
- horror freak
- eastwoodish cowboy
- antihero outcast
- silent stoic
- cold-blooded killer
- being immune to death and pain
- stereotype of the orphan looking for vengeance for his parents killed in front of him which he survived by miracle only to having died inside blah blah blah....
All of this couldn't hide the hideousness of this 2D character. In fact it did the opposite effect. And all of this is only worsened by the fact the writer, to whom it was assigned this miserable task, did wrote a masterpiece in one of the side series in the original saga.

As a bred 'n fed country boy, I have to disagree with you - cows shit everywhere, so it's completely natural. :D

...and the president being sick...

Don't even get me started. Casting Stands-with-Fists as President Roslin was a bad idea. Sucks you have wait until the last 10 mins of the show before she finally kicks the bucket, haha.

...I read that they didn't really have a plan and everything fell apart in the end....

I think Moore had a general idea of where the show would end up(earth) and certain events that would take place, but he(they) improvised along the way(for instance, Helo + Athena = Hera, which was great, I think, and added more meaning to the characters and story).

Everyone seems to not like the ending for some reason. I don't really know what they expected. I'm kool with it.

...The same as with Games of Thrones lately...

I stopped watching GoTs a couple seasons ago, lol. The books are waaaay better.

....But it went downhill fast once the main guy had visions of the main villain always talking to him which really sucked...

That's the aspect of the show I enjoyed the most! I loved the times when Scorpius was F'in with Crichton's head, and later, vise versa.

Glad you recognised my avatar. I actually made that outfit (with the chinese jacket, which was really hard to sew) as a cosplay. It's still my favorite cosplay.

I love Firefly, one of the best scifi shows out there. And yes, it's tragic, that it got cancelled.
If you don't know Babylon 5, you should really watch it. It's really great scifi :)
I never participated in the Trekkie versus Babylon 5 fans discussion btw. I love both B5 and DS9.

How is the VTMB playthrough going? (to get back a bit on topic)
